My vet travels over half the state of Virginia, and always let's me know when there's animals or AI being offered at the local farms with good reputation. So, always ask your vet if you have a good one.

What I've gathered from watching your videos is that dexter cattle seem gentle and good natured. When I eventually buy my farm I'll definitely be raising dexter cattle.

I want to clear up one thing said in the video. The only required genetics for registration is the genotype for ADCA which enables sire or parental verification. Many do check for chondroplasia and PHA or prove that their stock does not carry these things by parental verification in their lines that were previously checked. Registration does not require proof that an animal doesn't carry these genes. PDCA does not require any genetic testing. They do encourage it.

I must have watched 30 episodes before I realized that we’re neighbors. (Your tour of the Farmers’ Market was a big clue - I’m a few miles down Rte 34, near the Rogues Harbor Inn). I’m looking forward to trying your product. Keep the videos coming.

The cattle you listed as far as pricing goes seems to be very reasonable. Now I can’t speak for today’s inflation but seeing as a purebred golden retriever (AKC registered and shots and all that) go for anywhere between $1,000-$1,500 depending on the coat color and lineage. We raised dogs for awhile, that’s how I know this. Ours went for that much but we never really charged $1,500 it was too much so we found like a good medium. Sometimes in certain cases we would lower the price for certain customers and if there were any health problems like a heart murmur or something. And sometimes give two for one 😂 all depends. We were very reasonable with our prices and it wasn’t all about the money. In fact, my mom only started doing this bc she found there to be a lack of QUALITY golden retrievers in our state. One could get nearly any dog out of Lancaster (aka puppy mill area) but then you’re forfeiting quality over quantity. We valued quality over quantity. We still have most of our breeding dogs bc they weren’t a money making breeding machine, they are our family even if we don’t breed them anymore. I still wouldn’t buy a dog from someone who discards dogs after they’ve hit their breeding prime (like puppy mills do) I’m so glad we’re done with the dog breeding now. I can’t wait for my dogs to become farm dogs! Living it up on the farm and coming along on chores 😂

Thanks. Very informative. I have 2 questions. First, if you look at someone's cattle and decide that you don't like what you see, how do you say "not interested" in a respectful way. Second, do you have any videos to help folks who may want to raise only one or Dexters (for example, for food) know what they will need in terms of barn space, pasture, food, vet bills, etc?
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vincent, we have gone to look at Dexters that we didn't wind up buying. Usually we spend a lot of time talking to the owners about their farm and getting to know them, as well as looking at the animals and talking about the price. If we don't like what we see we tell them we need to think about it and get back to them, then sleep on it & call/email them the next day that we are going to keep looking. Have you watched the "getting started with Dexters" video? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/euB7pMantt7HhZc.html I included some information for small operations.

Hi Pete, I like your videos they are very informative and interesting to watch. Keep doing this good work. How many Dexter would you suggest to keep on 10 acres ? Greetings from Alberta, Canada.
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, here in central New York we figure 1 Dexter per acre, which includes enough land to make hay for the winter. If you're buying hay, you can reduce that to 1/2 acre/head. Depending on your climate and grazing land quality you may need more land than that where you are.
@priestesslucy3299
@priestesslucy3299 3 жыл бұрын
Alberta is a lot drier than New York. The safest bet would be starting with two cow-calf pairs and assessing how much pasture they consume through the different parts of the year before expanding your herd on 10 acres.

Most of your information has truth and solidarity, however you share a lot of your information as facts in picking dexters. Your personal preference shouldn't be made into facts in how to purchase a cow. Different people don't require a cow to come up and give him a hug for example. Just my $0.02
