Just a Few Acres Farm

3 жыл бұрын

I had RECORD SALES at the farmers market today! This is the height of the farmers market season: There's lots of fresh produce, we are fully stocked with meat and eggs, and the farmers market customer crowds keep getting bigger. In between sales, I give advice about succeeding at the farmers market.
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

I'm impressed with the Ithaca market. The aisles in front of the booths look to be about 20' wide and that gives the public a lot of room to walk the market without bumping into each other. They did a good job designing it for the farmers and buyers, to have a good shopping experience.

I stopped by and said hi, briefly, at the Farmers Market on Saturday. Thanks for the great video. Last night, I was grilling some meat I'd gotten a few weeks earlier at IFM, and I noticed that that meat had a note about where it'd been processed. It made me wonder about the different processing options. I know that a few years ago, finding space in a processing plant was a huge challenge for local small farmers. You've shown videos where you do all the processing yourself. And as you noted in this video, you have some fresh chickens at each market. But in many cases, farmers are required to sell their meat frozen, right? Any chance you can discuss the different ways in which you and other farmers manage the options around meat processing? Thanks again for the very interesting videos.
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the government rules on this are confusing to say the least. Beef and pork has to be processed at a facility with a USDA inspector to be sold "by the cut." Limited amounts of poultry can be butchered on the farm under the USDA's "small farm exemption," without federal inspection. When we take beef or pork to the butcher, we get a large amount of meat back and it can't be sold quickly enough to keep it all fresh, so it goes in the freezer (actually, it is frozen when we pick it up at the butcher). For chicken, we can process small quantities weekly to bring it to the market fresh. The butchers are still backed up, but that hasn't affected us very much. My family has used the same butcher for 40 years, and he lets us know when his calendar is filling up so we can schedule dates ahead of time. Currently we have dates booked with him out to the end of 2022.

My brother sells at 2 Farmers Markers and 2 days at house which I run. We opened a new building that is air conditioned and our produce stays better longer. We have instances were we limit certain items so that all the regulars get our produce. Our sales have gotten better this year with more people spending more for fresh and grown without chemicals. Like you we promote a diverse atomosphere for all things to survive. We companion plant and replant to have same produce the full season. Brother is a hard working man and only has the help of 1 young man 3 days a week for 3 hours each day when we’re getting ready for markets. The one thing most people don’t understand that there is a lot of work that goes on outside of selling.

We raise pastured chicken and turkey on our homestead and the reason we do so is because of a visit to a farmer's market. We actually went to the market in search of bulk vegetable seconds for preserving and, although we didn't find that, we did meet "Farmer Rhonda"~~a farmer who has become a good friend. She was selling herbal soaps, various types of eggs, and pastured chicken. I had never visited a large-ish farmer's market and didn't have the first clue how her chicken was different than grocery store chicken, so I asked her: "Hi! I don't know anything about pastured chicken. How is it different from what I buy at the grocery store? Educate me!" And she did. We bought 3 frozen chickens and some herbal soaps (I've since become an herbalist!). I made the first chicken in a crock pot and it was delicious! One taste showed the difference in anemic grocery store chicken and pastured poultry. Farmer Rhonda also mentioned a couple of documentaries to us~~one being Food, Inc. We went straight home and watched it and loved it. It got the wheels turning for us. We eventually toured Polyface and met Joel and our son earned an apprenticeship there. We've now been raising pastured poultry for 7 years and we love it! All this to say that a friendly farmer at her booth at a farmer's market made a huge difference in our life! I'm sure you've had the same effect on many folks. God bless!

I’m heading to a multi-generation birthday party in upstate NY soon and look forward to a little detour to the Ithaca Farmer’s Market. I want to support you because I believe in the type of farming you do.

Hi Pete! I couldn’t agree more with your comment about getting energy from customer engagement at the market. Last spring I started taking my eggs to market. Now I draw so much energy, inspiration and motivation from that market time every 2 weeks! Even on the weeks where I don’t feel like packing up and hauling all the things to market, I come away at the end of the day both exhausted and rejuvenated at the same time from that special customer interaction. Something about being around like-minded people who truly value your efforts is just electric!

Thank you for sharing the Ithaca farmers market vendors and your knowledge! It can get a bit crowded sometimes when I go but it's nice to see so many of my favorite farmer booths still hustling!
