Omg! Same. I have always spoken in high pitch and when I force it 'down' it kills my throat. It took me years to learn how to feel the difference between my natural 'pink' voice-which is my default setting and the 'manly' voice I never utilised. Turns out that my default setting is speaking from my larynx. When I'm tired, smoked too much or barely slept, I speak from my diaphragm and a lot lower. But I have to consciously 'switch'. I have heard that the pitch isn't the giveaway. It's the pattern of tone. 'Femme' voices tend to end in upward inflections when speaking. 'Butch' voices tend to end in downward inflections. I have heard men with very high pitches and nobody told them they sounded femme. Its the pattern of tone.
