If they pay for it fine ill punish them another way, but if it was paid for with my own or my wife's money then I'm taking it, selling it, shooting it, or smashing it. Well cruel isn't the word here, the proper word is; "Unreasonable" its unreasonable for the parents to break their children's electronics cause. 1.) They're destroying what they most likely spent money on(Which is a waste) 2.) Destroying something their child dearly loves, and puts time and effort in basically taking away something the children really like. The punishment is unreasonable, a ban on the device would do just as well. Unless the child is a rebel then just hide that electronic till they behave.

I asked how he would feel if he came home from work to find a smouldering pile of ashes that used to be his house... Didn't turn out so well for me though, he marched me into my room, made me grab a backpack and fill it with clothes then marched me out the front gate with my bike and told me i needed to find somewhere else to live... The real kicker though, as i was curled up in the shelter shed at my local park for the night, bunch of druggos or alchos or both found me there, bashed me, took my backpack and bike then left me there for dead. The garbage man found me the next morning about 5am, unconscious, barely breathing, lying in a dried up pool of my own blood. The damage to my brain affected my movement, balance and coordination, my whole left side of my body feels numb and unresponsive with feeling in my extremities. That day was the last day i ever rode a bike and now i have little choice other than to play basic computer games and watch youtube videos...

im pretty sure any family would prioritize a TV before a gaming system, and so many families (even poor), although they arent rich enough to have a gaming system, will probably have a TV, which is one of the most staple electronics in the world (after the mobile phone). Plus TVs dont have to be those massive LED screens. Im assuming we're talking about families who arent homeless but are just poor. In that case, im pretty sure a family who can afford at least a room in the Western world can probably afford and (will probably invest in) a TV, however old it may be.
