10 күн бұрынThis is the story of the strange highway shower by the volcano Krafla in North-Iceland but my friend Chris was here in the north recently and we did some touring around. He had lots of fun until managed to convince him to do a shower scene for this video but I was using this tour to capture some tourist content since I've been focusing some much on volcanoes for months now.

I'm absolutely delighted to see the shower is still there :) I was staying at the power-station barracks as part of a team doing geophysical survey in 2012 when it mysteriously appeared one night. A year later it was still going but the ground around it was getting badly churned up by cars trying to visit the new "feature". I went back in 2015 expecting it to have been capped off and returned to nature but no, it was still going and the surround had been graded to make a parking area! Love Iceland so much :)

That area (Leirhnjukur to be exact has also the weird turn around gate with no fences attached to it, making you wonder... why???????

We visited that shower a few years ago. I sometimes think about how crazy it is that every minute of every hour, while we work and sleep, it is just constantly running. Imagine what the hot water bill would cost anywhere outside of Iceland to run that shower!

This is a delightful landmark and unique origin story. I have a feeling that if something like that happened here in the US, a shower would be one of the last things they'd think to do with it, lol. Made a detour visit to this little fun shower in February. At -19 it was not much more than a dribble. It’s with thanks to you Gylfi that we flew up to Akureyri , ventured through the snow to Husavik and explored around Myvatyn , even found the Yule Lads hang out. 🎉 did the rest of the island too, but the North was for me the best. Planning yet another exciting trip next year. Maybe a trip the West Fjords 🤔

Thanks for sharing :) The north is fantastic but my perfect days are also about chasing the weather since it can play tricks on us like you must know by now :) The West-fjords are in a category on it's own, fantastic during good days but hopeless in low visibility :) good to plan around that and welcome back to Iceland. I would love to see my country have these in some the back country trails for the hikers. But this is quite humorous to see. It does need a curtain or wall for people who are shy. Its actually a great idea, quirky, but still a great idea. 👍

Amazingly convenient this shower is at 'human safe' temperature all the time. Paranoid me would be checking the temperature before standing under it. Doesn't take much to get scalded at hot springs.

Same here! I was there in April 2017 surrounded by new snow, freezing my ass off and the public hot bath near Myvatn was closed on Sundays. Like so many times already, I find out about the best places while I'm gone, and I was 7 month in Iceland... Like Gylfi says... 'welcome back' ... when ever that might be...

I really enjoyed this look at some of the unique and dramatic features around your country and hope prospective tourists take due note and look into the many possible destinations. I suspect the hot shower is both useful engineering, a pressure release perhaps, and an example of the Icelandic sense of whimsy.
