Amen ND amen , thanks , what a teaching , gospel of repentance and seeking God's presence ND His will.

I find myself considering the lesson for any rich man in this parable. Was it a sin for him to have all that he had? I think not. The saving grace for the rich man would be a generous nature. Meaning, he doesn't simply feed Lazarus, but he becomes a friend to Lazarus. Had the rich man looked at Lazarus and considered his own resources to nourish Lazarus back to good health, I think God would smile at him after that. And an even greater smile as the rich man ends up spending time with Lazarus, not just to help him out, but because he enjoys the company of Lazarus. Because when you love someone, you really do enjoy having them around, and this is one of the greatest premises of the Gospels, in my opinion.

Justin is correct that hell is actually in the presence of God. However he misunderstands the concept that is "the wrath of God". The wrath of God is actually an appositive genitive construct: it means to say "the wrath that is God". So those who are not in Christ but who stand before Him for eternity, experience Him as though He were wrathful simply because of His holiness. So it's not that God is angry, but simply that His very presence causes the sinful to burn.

I agree. Freewill: an ages old debate. Where does it start and where does it end? If man was given freewill from God does God take it back when you repent? Does Sola Scriptura overcome this argument? Martin Luther makes a viable case against Erasmus. Will that argument hold today in the mega churches or is it the very argument of freewill that argues against Sola Scriptura. Is it the very use of the ungodly to "use" freewill as a bondservant bilking billions from the bondservant? Was Martin Luther correct?

How did Lazarus get to go to heaven (OT Abraham's bosom)? Just because he experienced the worst in life and did not get the good things in life? No! Jesus said He is the way, the truth, and the Life, no one comes to the father but through Him. Let's examine the name Lazarus. It is Greek for Eleazer which means "whom God helps". That is the only way to heaven - Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are you saved through faith, and that (faith) not of yourself. It is the gift of God so that no one may boast.

Justin Peters has taken Jesus' story about Lazarus the Beggar to mean that people are powerless to save themselves but the story is not about a man who was saved when he could not save himself. There is absolutely nothing in the text about Lazarus coming to believe in God. Rather, he seems to be a righteous man despite his low position and suffering. If the focus of Jesus' lesson was on Lazarus' HELPLESSNESS to save himself how would that apply to the rich man who was not helpless? Is Jesus trying to say there are people who CAN save themselves? This is sloppy exegesis and the thing is we need not try to ferret out the meaning of the passage when Jesus ALREADY explained it. He did so in verse 15: 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight. (Luke 16:15) Jesus point was that people's values were false and often opposite to God's. That is the point. He is not saying we are totally helpless in the process of salvation. While we cannot save ourselves God expects us to repent, believe in Christ and confess his name to men: 8 But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”-that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. (Romans 10:8-10) Repentance and faith are not meritorious works that EARN salvation for us. They are the result of a soul which feels and yields to the influence of the Spirit.

Justin Peters sounds good at first, but he twists scripture to suit his needs to criticize Christians who spend their time teaching people about God. Justin says that what the Word says about not judging doesn't mean the kind of judging he does, it means the kind of judging that others do. The Word says "Judge not, so you won't be judged." But he says that doesn't mean all people, it means just people he doesn't think are right. And HE is the judge of who is right. Right ! You know last time I read that verse it doesn't differentiate what kind of judging would be good. Telling what YOU think is in a person's heart and intentions is judging. So maybe he thinks he knows what is in a person's heart. WOW. Scriptures say God is the only One Who can see what's in a person's heart. But Peters takes it on himself to tell everyone what's in someone's heart; WOW! Did God give him this ability? What do you think?
