What is special about The Ryder Cup is that the only motivation is Sport. If that's not enough for the players, then don't play. Just cancel the whole damn thing and we will follow the Walker Cup more closely. I've heard about enough whining multi-millionaires for one lifetime. Pathetic little beaches... smfh

But, since these are well compensated professionals, let's say that there should be a pool of money for both teams to share and provide motivation: members of the winning team get $1 million each but the losers get $100K each, 50% to the golfer and 50% to his chosen charity. In the great scheme of golf financials, this is not a lot of money and it would provide some additional motivation to play well and eliminate the whininess and bitchiness from twerps like Cantlay and Schauffle. Play well, be paid well; play badly and be paid badly. And, why is Schauffle's father's opinion worth a flying f***? IIRC, he was an Olympian once but was injured and couldn't compete, so now it appears he's trying to live vicariously through his son. I've never seen him smile. He always looks like someone who has a painful case of hemorrhoids and forgot his Preparation H. IMO, the honor of being chosen should be enough of a reward in itself but, then again, I'm unfashionably old fashioned. Just my $0.02.

I think America should be more worried about Team Captains picking UN-QUALIFIED buddies to play instead of having the BEST PROFESSIONAL American golfers on the team! All it took was a captain picking buddies getting their butts kicked and deflecting attention away from a lousy teams play!

They act like they got nothing. They got an all expenses paid trip for them and partners to go to Europe to represent their nation. Representative teams should not be “paid” but they shouldn’t be out of pocket.

We could go back and forth about the players getting paid -definitely lean to pay for many reasons -if for no other reason to make sure the top guys keep coming back. BUT the BIG issue -as Xanders dad was talking about -is transparency …as in everyone knowing EXACTLY where every Darn penny of these moneys is going. And None of that vague growing the game talk. Players deserve to know exactly how the money is being used. Executive salaries do not grow the game and is not charity.

Ruggers get paid for 6 nations caps and I’m sure there are plenty of other examples out there. I don’t think I have a firm opinion on this one. Maybe golf should just let the players have more opportunity to profit from social media. The whole locked down media rights thing is partly the problem. Most golf commentators on TV are complete cringe. I sometimes mute it and listen to something else. It’s a shame more golfers aren’t putting in effort like Bryson

Their individual sponsors pay bonuses in their contracts for Ryder Cup, wins, FedEx cup etc. if they want to get paid throw $20M in a pot with winning team taking all.

I don't believe they should be paid for playing. Are they out of pocket for travel expenses, accommodations, clothing, caddy expenses? If so, that should all be covered. They're (because of their ability to make the Ryder Cup) the top tier of paid golfers and don't think they'd miss the week's paycheck. This won't be decided or acted upon until one or more declines the opportunity to play. The chance to represent their country (or Union) should suffice. Do golfers get paid to play in the Olympics?

They need to to be paid. Because it already goes to the TV networks and executives of the people who organize it and they sit back and earn more money off the golfers playing for free lol. Not fair, easy to understand.

Pay them what they think they are deserved the problem is how are you going to go about making sure you have the best players at the Ryder Cup. This whole me me me mentality in golf is getting super old. Too many quality player left off the last US team that were on a roll and to many buddy picks. Add money to the mix and watch social media blow up when the picks are made.

The PGA of America makes millions off this event and the PGA Championship. None of it is shared with PGA members, who also do not receive any pension contributions from the PGA of America. I know. I am a 33 year, life member of the PGA. Very frustrating.

The PGA of America cannot and will never be allowed to give the $$ directly to it’s dues paying members due to IRS tax laws referred to as inurement. Instead, they do put it back into the game with benefits “in kind” to the members through PGA Sections services, PGA Career Services, Player Engagement, etc. PGA HQ only gets $100 per year in dues from their members so they more than “give it back” in services rendered.

@@mlkoch5902 I assume that you’re an employee or some kind of office holder with the PGA. Why don’t you tell me what the current salaries are of our current administrative people at the PGA of America. I and other fellow members have felt for years that PGA is only concerned about taking care of what already are the highest earning club professionals. That are a lot of us over the years who made very modest incomes due to numerous circumstances.

@@mlkoch5902 The PGA also likes to pat itself on the back for all their offered services to members, which by the way have fees that we or our employers must pay out of pocket to tak advantage of. Their so-called promotion of club professionals had very little impact for those of us who worked at smaller clubs in rural areas. The PGA of America - definitely a good old boys club!

IMO, we need a no nonsense leader with a plan, like Paul Azinger provided for his winning RC team in 2008. Zach Johnson treated this like a boys weekend away with his buddies and got his backside handed to him by the Euros. IMO, he should have been publicly flogged by the PGA after that debacle. I can only hope that Keegan Bradley provide some hard nosed leaderships as did Zinger and craft a plan to use each player to the best of his abilities. Hmmm...maybe Zinger could be named as an associate captain?

I appreciate the argument that one is "playing purely for the games' sake." It was the argument made to keep the Olympics "amateur" sport. But the sad reality is that many countries turned the idea of "amateur" on its head and made participating "your job." In the US, we've seen this in college football/basketball, where the young people who participate are generating billions in dollars of revenue for various entities, college head coach nick saban at Alabama was making up to $11M per year. It's nice to do something for the sport, but is it morally right that money should be made off of your efforts gratis? At the bare minimum they could value participation at some number (say $2M) and then use that money for non-profits so the participants could then receive the tax write-off but I personally find the idea of generating revenue for media corporations for free as gross.

Expenses should be paid. Fully. For the caddies as well. But i always thought the motivation was playing for your country and each other. Maybe that's why Europe seems to be getting stronger while the US is struggling. I thought at 1 time the players stipends were paid to the charity of their choice. It would be nice to have charities benefit from the team events. I have no problem with the pga recouping their cost of sponsorship of the USA team.

This is a fact - EVERY single US team member gets $200k that is donated to their charity of choice…that is not paid directly to them but it is a form of compensation.

I believe the players SHOULD be paid to play. What they do with the funds is then entirely up to them. Let's just stop this nonsense about being "honored" to represent your country. It would be different if no one was profiting from this, but the reality is that some organizations are and that is not fair. If you don't want to pay them a set amount then profit-share - give them a percentage of the profits. This is the same thing the PGA Tour is guilty of - hiding the profits they make and not giving the players a fair deal (especially those that miss the cut). Is it a wonder LIV is attracting the players???

Miss the cut then NO money for you , Why ? because when they make it onto the PGA Tour they receive close to $500,000 (might be more now) in sponsorship money which is given to them so they can afford to play and are able to play on the Tour, FREE MONEY or $9,000 per week whether they play or not and the rest is up to them , seems fair don't you think ? Other than that Sir you are 100% correct , After all Jay Monahan receives a healthy bonus from the Ryder Cup so why shouldn't the Players have a slice of the Pie and in fact the Biggest slice for that matter.

I hate the hypocrisy , ryder cup venue charging ridic amounts for water , you name it , confiscating water etc on entry points , charging the earth for anything with the ryder cup logo on etc etc.... they must make a fortune on tv rights aswell...so as for getting paid , maybe not paid but certainly some arrangement so they have at least a contribution to perhaps charities/foundations they are involved in, and perhaps they can promote some joint program between the teams to grow and or help less priv players etc....

If the Ryder Cup is comparable to the FIFA World Cup as a sporting event. Football players representing their countries get payed for their appearance in the World Cup. Argentina, my country, won the 2022 World Cup, and the players got duly compensated. Professional Golfers should get compensated as well

Why do golf pundits and commentators always assume the money the Ryder cup generates gets "funneled back into golf and grows the game" and repeat that over and over. Show me the accounts, show me where the money went, and show me the progress in the growing of the game. I bet you neither the USPGA, or DPWT can, the former spent millions on new facilities for themselves.

I think given all the players that make the Ryder cup have made a lot of money to get there. I believe it should remain as a non paid event. What the players should do is use their influence to make sure that money made from the event is used to promote grass roots golf for young underprivileged players. If a player demands compensation to play for his country then name and shame them.

Yes, they should be paid. In this format only the ryder cup benefits. The rider cup is not the Olympics. I too agree that the player should have the option to take their earning for that week and donate it to the charity of their choice.

Their designated charities are paid now and have been for 20 years or so. If you want to incentivize them, make them wear the Ryder cup hat of the team that beats them until the next Ryder cup!

Yes they should get paid. The European Team is just better, and has better players. Getting paid is not going to make Zach Johnson make better decisions or scrubs like Justin Thomas, and Spieth play better. Bottom Line Zach Johnson put together a garbage team and compounded that with horrible decisions. I am expecting the European team to dominate the US team for a long time

This revenue funds the organisation and things like Walker cup etc, considering they are pampered beyond belief including their wives and girlfriends, plus the extra endorsements they get for being a Ryder cupper are huge, 1 week every 2 years, pampered beyond belief, id rather them not play if its only about money

And as far as “representing your country”, how exactly do you do that if you’re on the Euro team? I don’t know if everybody knows this, but Europe isn’t a “country”. The English hate the French, the French hate the Germans, the Germans laugh at the Spaniards, the Spaniards laugh at the Italians, and they all laugh at the Greeks.

The PGA of America owns the Ryder Cup. All expense paid trip to a great venu and fame isn't enough?? Part of the mystic of the RC is the fact that it's playing for your country. The honor of being on top. Some players can be such douches. Bonuses from sponsors etc is different. Its sad people cry tradition and then turn right around and slap tradition in the face. The Europeans have never had to play for their country. They have always played for Europe which although they do represent their country, they still have European gear on so who are they really playing for? The pressure for Europe is considerably less than those representing the US. Every European fan that hates the US gets some sort of income from the US for their country. Americans mostly feel that part should stop. The Ryder Cup is now a political joke.
