Dolly's original was meant to be a heartfelt song to her mentor; Porter Wagoner; when she decided to break away from him and begin a solo career. This was her way of saying goodbye , no hard feelings, and wish you well; but time to move on.

@@huskerchickmissy Dolly didn't write it for a movie, which I'm sure your referring to "The Bodyguard". You also have to consider she is singing it to a person. Whitney doesn’t sing hers that way. More of a way of declaring her love rather then directing to someone. Dolly was singing this and wrote this for the host of this show. It would make no sense to sing it like Whitney did.

@@JustinDorseyTV without a doubt. And if you listen to Dolly talk about Whitney covering it. She will admit that Whitney owned it and that she is honored that she did. I will say this though, at least you realized that it is Dolly's song. There have been many reactions that people thought it was Whitney's song and Dolly covered it. Truly both amazing versions of the song, and Dolly's is very strong if you think of the personal context that goes along with it.

Dolly singing "I will always love you" is like a lover whispering in your ear in the bedroom. Whitney Houston singing "I will always love you" is like someone standing on the front lawn belting it out so the whole neighborhood can hear. I have NEVER told my wife "I will always love you" at the top of my voice with all the power I can muster. Whitney sings it with power. Dolly sings it with feeling.

No one writes a song thinking, "This is going to be a big hit for someone else." Honestly, you can't compare the two. Dolly's version was a personal song, Whitney's was on a soundtrack for a movie. Too different styles, too different motivations. Don't get me wrong, Whitney's version is amazing!! How could it not be, she had such an incredible voice! She could kill any song. But Dolly's had more meaning.

A great Dolly quote when asked about Whitney's being a bigger hit than hers she said, "When I hit it big, I laughed all the way to the bank. When Whitney's hit it big, I laughed and bought the bank." Cause she never gave up the rights and got the royalties off of Whitney's lol.

When Dolly wrote this song it wasn’t about a romantic relationship (although the words can be taken that way.) she wrote it about her and her music partner going separate ways with their careers. I think that had a lot to do with her choice in delivery, cause she wrote it to be a goodbye letter to a colleague. Whitney turned into a love ballad, so she added passion to the song by belting the lyrics. Dolly can belt to when she wants to. I think for her it just didn’t feel appropriate for this song and her intent with it.

Whitney Houston was an awesome vocalist, but, only cowrote about 10 songs and she didn't do the arrangements.

The song isn’t supposed to be cutesy. The story behind the song is this: Back then Dolly was on the porter wagoner show. The money was good so she said that she would stay for five years as part of a group and Porter agreed to it. Five years came and she wanted to go and venture out on her own. The two used to fight like cats and dogs because they were both stubborn. Porter wouldn’t listen so she went home and wrote a song about it. She came back and told Porter to sit down and listen cause she was going to sing for him “let me sing this song and then you’ll know how i feel and that i will always love you,” She sang it and Porter said “you can go provided that i produce that record,” he did and it became the biggest hit that she ever had.

Dolly Parton wrote the song basically as a goodbye note to her mentor. It was not originally intended as a mega-hit love song or to be conveyed in the exact same way Witney or other artists sung it, but rather as an affectionate goodbye to a long time friend when she decided to move on with her career. But as with all covers and versions, each person takes something different from it.

The backstory to this song is this: Dolly Parton was trying to tell Porter Wagoner that she was going to leave his show and go it alone. Well, according to Dolly he wasn't having any of it. She decided that the only way to tell him was through a song. It was her way of saying that she would always love him but now it was time to move on. She told him that she has something to tell him but she was going tell him in a song that she wrote for him. According to Dolly, Porter Wagoner cried when he heard the song and told her it was ok if she leaves but only if was able to produce the song. The rest as they say, is history. P.S. That is Porter Wagoner that she is talking to at the end of the video.

Just reacting my first here. Dolly wrote this song as a goodbye to porter wagner. Porter was the man that owned that show she sang this on . Porter Wagner show was a right wing Christian network. The clothes dolly wore on the show she was forced to wear. Dollys last performance on the show with this song. She wore a red dress in protest of them . That made Dolly to be the first woman to wear the scarlet letter. Dolly even today isnt played by right wing Christians or stations. Because of Dollys liberal views . Dolly had to buy her own production company.

After only knowing the Whitney Houston version of this song for 26 years of my life and liking it well enough I can honestly say that whomever’s version you liked more has absolutely nothing to do with whatever version is “better” but rather what your music taste is like. I say this because I vastly prefer Dolly’s og version even though I had only heard Whitney’s version and thought she was the originator of the song up until very recently. Most people tend to prefer the “first” edition of whatever the subject is by nature so the fact that I prefer Dolly’s version says something

I remember seeing Dolly in an interview addressing a Tabloid headline that said "Dolly says to Whitney Houston" "I will always hate you for having a bigger hit with this than I did!" Dolly said "that's the craziest thing I've ever heard!" "Whitney had a huge hit, did a great job and I'll get royalties from it, it'd be stupid for me to hate Whitney, I love her for it!"

Whitney may have the more powerful notes but Dolly has the more powerful emotions, I much prefer Dolly's version

You should listen to the radiolab podcast series they did about Dolly Parton. The have a complete episode dedicated to the origin how the song came to be. It makes it more powerful if you know the story. At least it did for me. (English isn’t my first and also not even second language, so hope you guys understand wat I wrote)

Dolly would never say that her own version is better. She leaves that up to her fans. And her version is better :-

ITS NOT WHITNEYS SONG!!!!!. Dolly wrote it and she took it to number 1 TWICE before Whitney started singing. Give the woman the respect she deserves. How can you say you don't feel anything? Maybe you're dead inside. This is more heartfelt and sincere than Whitney's. Whitney's is more dramatic but drama is the opposite of sincerity. SHE WROTE THE DAMN SONG ABOUT A SPECIFIC PERSON/ EVENT IN HER YES HER I'LL SAY IT AGAIN HER LIFE OF OF COURSE SHE FELT IT. Whitney didn't even arrange the version she sang David foster did. Whitney executed the singing but contributed no artistic stylings.

In 1982 Dolly did a remake of the song in which I think had more soul. Not power like Whitney but still more soulful/emotional.

While Whitney's version was powerful, Dolly's was tender and emotional (since she's the one who wrote it based on her own experience). Too bad you can't tell the difference between a sincere performance and one that was orchestrated for a movie.

Dolly only let Whitney Houston record this song. Dolly wrote this song. Elvis wanted to record it, but she turned him down.

I agree with other commenters who have said that when Whitney sings it, she’s singing it to everyone and when Dolly sings it, she’s singing just to you, which is more personal and way better in my opinion. I don’t like Whitney’s version. This song went to #1 both in the 70s and 80s with Dolly.

This was Dolly’s song, from the movie Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. She wrote it and it was a number one hit for her twice. Once when the record was released and when the movie. There are much better videos. The sound was very unbalanced. You really should hear her sing it in the movie. Came out. You need to listen to Dolly:’s Coat of Many Colors.

Because this is the original and this is what I grew up with and I know the story I can feel this song so much more than the Whitney version. Also I’m from near where Dolly is from so she is special to me. Dolly sang this from her heart so to me it is the far superior version. But I’ve already stayed all my bias 🤘 and I understand y’all didn’t understand this song when you did this reaction. I am pretty sure by the time she wrote this song she had already written 3000 songs. She is a very prolific writer. Also I know she appreciates the Whitney version because she made a ton of money off it.

To me it just seems like she is singing this song she wrote with very little effort. She is relaxed and still hitting those notes. Dolly has written a few thousand songs and has gotten paid big time.

Whitney's version is very powerful and showy in a voice gymnastics kind of way but in my opinion Dolly put a lot more sincerity and feeling into her singing. Comparing Isn't fair for both singers though, since they don't have the same voices or the same way of interperting the lyrics. Dolly walked so that Whitney could run
