Please Please Please keep this series up, Justin and Lee. It literally makes me carve out time in my busy schedule to pick up my guitar and practice. I am not anywhere near the level you are, Lee (if that is any consolation), but the fact that you are sticking to this, as busy as you are, inspires me. Justin, I am subscribed to your channel as well and am availing myself of your teaching. Thanks again!

Anyone else hearing the imaginary IV chord at 14:28? The Captain leads up to it so nicely that my ear hears the IV even though Justin sticks on the I! Great lesson. Justin is an absolute legend. He’s the OG KZfaq teacher and he’s still delivering amazing free lessons after like 15 years!

I taught guitar full time for ten years - and you learn the easiest ways to get this stuff across. I.e.- think of a keyboard and play three note with one gap between each key on the white keys - that's a three note chord from the C scale. If you make the lowest note a C you have a C major chord - if you then run that up the keyboard one key at a time you'll have the harmonised scale of C major. C. Dm. Em. F. G Am. Bdim and back to C. Add another note - 4 piano keys with one gap between each key - you'll go up a harmonised major 7th scale Cmaj7 to Cmaj7. This stuff is easy. It's just that there's a load of teachers who kinda want to make it techy - that way you get students to keep coming.

Who knows, thanks to these videos maybe in a few years we will here good music on the radio again from people actually learning music.

I love Andertons' (& Rob's) attitude towards 'youtube'-ing. Always positive, encouraging, no competing, no sly remarks, no forced gimmicks to boost viewership. Justin is just the same, great guy. I think the best youtubers are those who actually love what they do and that for them monetization is a very welcome plus, not the end goal. I love the fact that these guys are willing to cooperate to give something great for us viewers. Makes me feel a warm fuzzy feeling. Rock on! PS: Would also love if you could do a mashup with Scott from ScottsBassLessons :)

Lee, I am with you on this man. Music theory just hurts my head and it’s just plain annoying when folks who get it easily make like it’s no big deal.. 😖
@andrewleicher724
@andrewleicher724 5 жыл бұрын
Don't think of it as Justin acting like it's no big deal, he's just trying to get across that it will eventually sink in. I'm not super knowledgeable, but I can do some basic chord substitutions in a blues progression. The MOST IMPORTANT thing is: keep at it, at some point it will click. Even if that "click" is just on a basic level, it opens up new worlds for you. Justin does a great job explaining this stuff.

Captain needs to focus and knuckle don a bit and trust in his ability. Justin is teaching you the basics very well and is very patient with your slightly defeatist attitude to the lessons. Learning will always require pushing yourself. Great content for beginners or those wishing to learn from Justin's approach to teaching.

I am wondering how long it will take until I don't feel like Lee looks like he feels during lessons whenever I am taking a lesson. How do people get that good? I am pretty sure I have been playing since before Justin was born. I will blame it on not having the internet until I was 40. What a treasure trove of knowledge. Props to my friend Derek (he would be the Justin in our guitar relationship) for the recommendation.

Suggestion for future videos. It would be interesting to have Lee sitting in with a bass player( could be Justin) trying to play something, both "premade" and improvisational to see a beginner learning to play with another instrument, jamming and things like that. Kind of a beginner with a seasoned bass player with his teacher at his side to guide. Interesting also the opposite.....the begginer leading the jam and the bass player explaining what he is going to play on bass to suit the noodling of the tedious beginner

These are fascinating and great lessons, i've been in "the rut" for many years (played for 25) but had a break through understanding modes and now these are helping too. Like the captain, it's the theory that's difficult to grasp for me too, other than that it's just learning shapes (albeit thousands of different ones!)

This definitely the point where it starts to get sticky for me and very much I need to somehow get lodged between my ears... that level where you can jazz up a blues and start to reach towards a jazz blues. Will be watching this a few times me thinks. Thanks to you both - to Lee for having the humility to put himself in a learning position and Justin to explaining stuff so well. Great work! Edit: would help if I could play those damn 9th chords with the root on the a string without muting the major 3rd... gah!
@81ghale
@81ghale 6 жыл бұрын
A tip I saw somewhere awhile back (may have been from Justin actually) is to use the SIDE EDGE of your ring finger to bar, not flat like you would on a regular Barre chord. That way when you reach straight over the tip of the ring finger with your middle finger it creates enough space to clear the D string. Using the side of your finger to Barre is key.

@@tituschalk no problem! I had the same problem until I heard that and it works like a charm. Just make sure you're reaching straight over the top of your ring finger with your middle and it'll clear the D string.

I learn guitar by ear and have found that it's too hard for me to remember all this stuff. I just used trial and error to find all the variants. BUT. I love that they're taking time to show this. I call it chord fill. Whereas you have lead fill to accent a rhythm player, if you're playing alone, it gives you the opportunity to fill that music out with something outside just the base chords.
