This has been a very helpful series for me personally. It has been inspirational, and while I am not anywhere near where I want to be, I have taken a little from each show and improved dramatically. I think there are too many gear reviews. I would rather you guys pick some basic misunderstood gear and show how to use it in context. For example: What is a compressor, how do you use it in context. What do the settings mean? On an Amp, what does gain actually do? How do you use the tone knob on a guitar, in conjunction with the EQ controls on an amp? Etc. With Lee's knowledge of gear, what would Justin want to know from him?

You should check out that pedal show on youtube, they cover a lot of this stuff. look at the episodes on EQ pedals, how many watts do you need? compressors and the "get more from you amp" episodes.

Xander Crews I do watch it, and I love that pedal show, but they come at pedals from an experienced player perspective. (Not that the Captain is inexperienced!) But I think a more basic perspective focusing on one thing might be helpful.

You guys have hit on a great format for lessons. Even if I'm not quite where Lee is in expertise, his struggle is visible and we relate to him, and it brings more out of Justin and vice versa. Who was it that taught by dialog? Socrates? Justin is now the Socrates of guitar instruction.
@mwmcbroom
@mwmcbroom 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's called the Socratic method, which is, quoting Wikipedia here, "a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions." It's been a great method of instruction for millenia and counting.

I want to put something out there: This series of videos is so inspiring and educationally precious! Thank you very much! And the fact that Lee goes out there "with his vulnerabilities" (quote) makes Andertons and everybody involved even more likeable! When I watch this I go "Yeah I've been struggling with this, too" or "I'm not alone" at least five times in one vide. So thanks! Cheers! Frank

Best lesson series ever. Thanks much Justin & Cap! Also PLEASE heed Justin's advice about memorizing the notes of the fretboard. Don't wait 20 years like I did kids! Whether it's 3 notes per string, caged, shapes, or any other method being taught in various lessons- I've found that knowing where those notes are is the key that will unlock them all. It may seem like too much with all the sharps and flats, but just learning the ABCDEFG will improve your playing a million%

I know many people say this, but respect to you Lee for doing this. I find myself cringing at just the same points as you when it gets hard so fair play for doing it for “us lot” on t’internet. For every cringe you make, we learn! Also respect to Justin for his teaching - super clear, with a structure behind it all - couldn’t ask for more. For future ideas - maybe showing how to put it into a live context if Lee’s up for that? Going from bedroom to gig brings lots of new considerations - maybe the other suggestions around how “mere mortals” can use certain pieces of gear. Eg. Katana 50 for a covers gig or how to use certain pedals in a live context. Again, well done and thanks to you both

Ah, Hendrixisms! One of my favorite areas of rhythmic noodlings. This sort of rhythmic style is something I picked up almost by osmosis early on in my delvings into Hendrix lo these many moons ago, but I've never really attempted to analyze what was going on until watching this video. Now, what Justin is teaching is largely second nature to me, because I've been playing them for so long, plus there are a few little dealeos that I often toss into the mix that are closely related to what Justin's teaching. Nonetheless, I especially appreciate this vid because Justin is presenting it in a very clear and easy to understand analytical style. And therein lies the value of this video -- Justin has clearly shown where and how these little hammerings work and even good ways to practice them, which should make rapid Hendrix experts out of everyone who watches this video! Yes? Okay, hyperbole, maybe, but not too danged far from the truth. Now, as for Pete, I must say, first of all that I think he is an excellent guitarist and soloist in his own right, and I've watched him grow in capabilities over the years of the Andertons videos such that I'm becoming a bit envious of a few of his moves. And props to him for being willing to reveal a very common weakness, namely his knowledge of notes on the fingerboard, which is something that I'll wager the vast majority of guitar players share right along with him. It's obvious why this is too -- we guitarists tend to think in patterns more than we do in notes or intervals the way other musicians do, especially once we've journeyed off into the temptations of soloing, discovering how patterns work so well for this. But patterns can take you only so far. Ask any jazz guitarist worth his salt about soloing over changes or building chord inversions and how beneficial patterns are, or in this case aren't. Once a guitarist has a firm grasp of the notes on the fingerboard, it becomes much easier to solo all over it, and also to build various chord inversions, which will improve one's chording style -- a true sign of the accomplished guitarist. Keep at it, Captain. We have every confidence in you.
