Omg ! As a retired hair stylist this is what I’m talking about these days , so many now go and train for hairdressing but don’t let their mind go beyond what they’ve been shown to do , now you are the true stylist in your thinking that’s where the gift and the craft comes into play . Seeing what suits the client , TELLINg them and making suggestions , then putting your own spin on it , so so hard to find a stylist that does that these days .👏👏👏👏👏

Yes! Seems like for some it’s almost robotic. If the client says layers they hold the hair and scissors this one way. Same technique for every client, every length, every texture! It’s so hard to find a stylist that can truly assess and customize! And even harder to find one who can think outside the box with atypical techniques.

I’ve worn an angled below chin length bob for most of the past 10-15 years. It’s a great easy, flattering style for me (I get frequent compliments) but the “secret sauce” to ease of blowout and maintenance was when I added an “undercut” to the back! That’s where my hair is super thick and wavy and seems to grow out faster than the rest. That undercut means less time in my blowout (with a large round brush) and I only need a few swipes of the flat iron on the sides and front. I’d love to see a part 2 Bob video that addresses the undercut.

Great advice! In a future video, could you give some tips on varying a bob style, for example with headbands, barrettes, combs, or half up, half down? These are hard to get right without it looking too juvenile-is there a way to approach using them at 50-plus?

@karynstouffer356211 ай бұрын
1-Yes, 2 - Yes, 3- Yes. 4- Oh my gawd, Yes! 5- YES! I can't even tell you how many times I had to tell clients that I "could" copy the photo they brought in. Then I would get as close as I could to showing them why I thought it was not the style for them. I would explain the difference in hair density, texture, growth patterns, all the things. I would even explain how the particular color technique enhanced the hair in the photo. I basically gave them a very thorough consultation. In the end, they would (most of the time) let me create a similar style, but more suited to them, and I would teach them how to actually style their hair. I drove my manager nuts by taking much longer for each appointment, BUT I also had so many more requests and much more client retention than the other stylists. I miss working in the salon sometimes.
@g3andrea11 ай бұрын
I totally agree about the proper angle for your face along with layering in the right places. I had the problem of too much bend at the bottom when I was wearing a bob a few months ago. No matter how much product I used, the weight of my baby fine hair would flatten out...except for the ends, because of my natural curls. I realize now that I just need a lot more layering for my hair to look right for my style aesthetic. I have now gone into a short pixie/bob. My hair stylist is working with me to tweak it so I can have versatility, and it will fall the way a bit more uniformly. Both sides of my hair do not have the same curl patterns, one sweeps back and lays smoothly. The other side flips out and looks shaggy. No matter how much I manipulate it with styling tools and products, once I walk outside or generate any body heat my hair goes flat on top and starts curling. I just need to embrace it and rock what I've got going on. lol
@kellyl81911 ай бұрын
I think we are the same person! I’ve got super fine hair w a slight wave that has the same wave pattern (left side flips out and right in), and I have what I call a “humidity meter” cowlick on the right that pops up through my hair when it hits the florida heat. No styling tool or product has been able to combat this! The closet I’ve come to getting sleeker hair in the humidity is the “ Wow” spray in the silver bottle. If I could just stay indoors in a dry climate I’d be all set! Lol I applaud your bravery for cutting it to a pixie. I think my head is too weirdly shaped for that but I love that on other people.

A couple of months ago I finally changed from the long hair messy topknot I’d been loving the last few years. Easy to do, easy at the Y in pool and aerobics…but watching your videos made me know I was ready for a change as I hit 73. I watched all of your bob videos and went to my long time stylist…who I didn’t see much of the last few years..lol… but I told her exact what I wanted and she did it. I was so happy with it….then a couple of weeks ago I was ready for a trim…I wanted the same style, just take an inch off. Gone was not only the inch…plus some…but the back was no longer tapered up and the front sides were no longer, longer than the back and shorter than I wanted. So it’s hair, I knew it was grow out so I didn’t freak out over it. But now as it’s starting to grow the back is more and more if a problem. So back I go, I’ll go back with specifics this time, won’t let her touch the sides…it’s all on me, why did I think she would even remember what she did six weeks earlier? Thanks so much for this video…you’re the best..and because you are, along with your gorgeous wife, I’m going to go check out those products you recommended while the specials are running!

I have thin, fine hair and have worn shorter cuts most of my life even when younger. I also have learned that while I can wear many styles, I still look better with bangs. Not blunt cut straight across bangs but stylists don’t understand textured bangs a bit arched in the middle and longer on the sides. I had let a bad haircut grow out and actually argued with the stylist who thought I should keep the grown out bangs to get to the bob length. I insisted and after she was done, she did admit that the bangs not only looked better on me but made me look younger. Forehead wrinkles and between the brow lines are covered, something that I already knew. I hate having hair in my face and eyes and don’t like fussing with my hair. I can accept someone’s opinions and suggestions, but I am not going to blow dry, apply products or use curling irons, so anything involving that on a daily basis is not going to work.

I agree and for years I was making the mistake of too much curve in the bottom because of how I round brushed and my hair being so thin. I finally started flat ironing my hair even though I have pretty straight hair and it has allowed me to get more curve midshaft and less curve on the bottom.

I totally agree about your thoughts on “too much bend at the bottom.” My hair does that naturally- I call it the old lady curl, and it’s not helped by the fact that I have a short neck so any type of grow out, wearing a hoodie, or a coat with a hood only emphasizes that trait in my hair. I straighten it at the ends to combat but humidity and the push from those factors just defeat my efforts. I find I have to go a bit longer or really stay on top of keeping things cropped.

I showed her Justin's video of that grey haired beautiful woman's bob when he competed against Gabi, a photo of 90s Natalie Imbruglia's hair and some in between shattered and shaggy bobs and lobs.. And told her to choose one of pics with or without bangs. Instead I got schoolgirl supercut, parted in the middle. It looks like a flat redhead doll's hair.

Hello Justin, why is there no one practising the Sassoon style of hair cutting and styling? Mos hairdressers do not even recognise the natural lie of the hair. This causes the cut looking so untidy when it is washed. The cut is not wash and wear. Most hairdresser hid their messy cut by chopping the ends in jagged manner.

I’ll get a great one, then go back in 6 weeks and say I want the same, and come out with a different haircut. After going to one hairdresser for 30 years and she retired, I can’t seem to find one who can be consistent. Is it me? I feel like because my hair grows really fast, the hairdresser thinks I just need a trim when I need more. I’ve given each new hairdresser (I’m on my third) a full year to figure my hair out. What’s the best way to communicate with my hairdresser? My last haircut looks like a mullet when I asked for a layered bob.

Do you take any pictures when you get the right cut? To show at the next appointment or a new hairdresser, or it doesn't help either? Trying to find a new hairdresser after "breaking up" with the one that understood your hair is such a struggle.

@@resstie I went back to her today and took a picture. She copied it exactly. I guess that’s what I should have done all along! It had to be my fault for not explaining what I wanted very well. I’m keeping that picture! 😂

@@trishdale5447 That's great! I think that hairdressing is a very fluid field, every technician has their own set of methods, rules, down to the vocabulary, all depending on the region, where did they study and practice etc. Not to mention their own preferences and vision. There are bound to be some miscommunications, so I don't think that's on you. I also can be bad with my words, so I prefer to have pictures on hand, haha.

My first bob that was slightly elongated in the front…i cut off those “points” and ruined my bob! I went from chic to helmet in just a few snips😑

HAHAHA! I'm laughing with you not at you! It's amazing how such a small change makes such a HUGE impact right!

I’m a master stylist. I understand haircuts. All you complaining about bad haircuts need to pay more and go to someone with 30 years experience. This country is so ageist that you won’t dare go to an “older” stylist. Well you get what you pay for.

I have thick curly hair,don't style/blowdry my hair,so one length or longer at the front bob,doesn't look good on me,even if I wanted that haircut,which I don't. But I don't like it on other people,either. I wear it with just enough layering,more rounded,which suit's me very nice with my curls.

I'm sure I'm one of many to say this, but I so wish you could help me. I have a Bob now, but I want to get a short haircut, but I'm having such a hard time deciding what will look best on me😊

I hate the bend at the bottom, I always straighten the ends after drying

I have subscribed! But I see absolutely no videos on curly or wavy hair. My hair is very thick, course and extremely wavy. I have learned that fighting that wave is fruitless. I’d like to see some videos on my kind of hair, please.

Thanks! Now I need to figure out how to not get a curl at the bottom of my bob! Off topic, who is on your arm?? That is an amazing tat!!

What about a long AND full face? How can we improve the shape?

No matter what I’ve told my stylists, my Bob always curls under like that and I really hate it. I’ll straighten my very fine hair (with a slight wave) to stick straight but then within an hour it’s curled under like that old 90’s cut. I’ve informed my stylist that this happens and can she cut it so it doesn’t do this, but she doesn’t seem to be able to cut it so it won’t curl under. Any tips for how to ask? Is it just inevitable for my hair?

Oh and it also looks like a triangle straight on. 😭😩

Sigh. How I wish I could get a haircut from you. Have gone from long to one length bob but am struggling to style/get the right length/proper cut on ends. Oh well. Enjoy your channel. :)

Firstly, how do you find a good hair stylist? Secondly, regarding the set there is a really visible scratch which was driving me nuts because I have a brand new scratch free iPad and I keep trying to work out if the scratch is on me screen. Overall, loved the clip.

I have naturally wavy/curly hair and with my bob, the day after I wash and style it is always havoc! I lose volume and the silkiness overnight. How can I style it without having to rewash it?

Hi Justin. Awesome informative video. I have a quick question what’s the difference between a long long lob and a Bob? is it a different cut when the hair curves or sweeps under, below your collarbone and longer? Love and hugs💕

Hi, I'm 45 and have thick and voluminous hair. I wear a tilted bob that needs thinning/ layering but it's never consistent with my hairstylist. What are the key terms to ask for?
@lee960411 ай бұрын
Too much bend at the bottom....but you never showed how it should look. Are you saying the hair should fall straight down hanging there? I have a basic bob with layering in the front? I'm not sure what it's called exactly...it's not hanging down straight. I tend to curl it under in the front and then brush back I'm not sure what else I can do. The back tends to flip up though I try to curl it under, but I think my previous cut was layered in the back and needs to grow out.

Yes, that was one of my issues with this video. He told us what we shouldn’t do but didn’t show any pictures of how the style would look if his suggestions were followed.

It might have been good to show photos of how a different way looks better. Like how to style the bottom instead of with the bend.

I really liked this video because I'm unsure if my bob style works with my fine obviously thin hair. What would you recommend for that? My hairdresser gives me a blunt cut at the bottom.
