(No mods required, btw 🤠) Just wanted to see how well the tips in my Deluxe Reverb video apply to the Princeton Reverb. So, why aren't you doing these things?!
I'm playing nearly the same solo off the top of my head as I did at the top of the Deluxe Reverb video just for comparison's sake.
0:00 Intro
0:50 Tip #1: 10 Treb 10 Bass ≤3
2:30 same solo as an example
3:40 Tip #2: Use it as a head
5:35 Tip #2.5: You can fit a 12" speaker in this cabinet
8:08 Tip #3: Use my "473" settings with a pedalboard. (Maybe start at 4 on the volume; 6 can have a bit too much breakup on many Princeton Reverb amps)
14:30 Will this work on YOUR amp?

I have a 63 non reverb Blackface Princeton. Awesome amp. I have is set up with an original Vox G12 blue Celestion. I bought the amp in 1969-70. I did a lot of mods, I was teaching myself using that, long before it was a vintage amp. I home record guitar and bass through it.

Your tone tip really nailed it. Check out a Tone Tubby Humbolt 12" hemp Alnico and change the coupling cap on pin 6, plate on triode B to .001uf on V3 12AX7 to tighten up a 12" speaker. I also change the 100k slope resistor to an 82K and an 8K in series (works out to be a 90k slope resistor) for better dynamics and more volume. The Princeton is so much easier to hulk around than the Deluxe is and it has sweeter tone.

I was watching a Carol Kaye interview in which she said the same thing concerning scales v. chord tones. She went on to demonstrate some of the things she played on and it was so tastefully quirky and musical. I was still dubious that the concept would be valid for all types of music until I heard her playing with Joe Pass. I'm no longer dubious. Fantastic sounds, Justin. I've been in the process of designing and/or copying a tube amp circuit and I've been on the fence about which direction to go. Your Princeton and Deluxe Reverb videos have helped me make up my mind.

I subscribed about 2 weeks ago when I stumbled upon your "dad band review" video. To your point; there are a billion YT channels about gear, lessons, etc. So what I really dig about your channel is you talk about your experiences in the realm of music. And I really enjoyed hearing your insight on the dad band submission. Great channel, please keep it up!! Oh and I will contribute some of my experiences with a Hot Rod Deluxe. I used to run it as a head, through a Genz-Benz 212 Flex. It really opened it up, and enjoyed doing that for a few years. But I'm now running a Celestion Alnico Creamback, as a combo amp now. While the Creamback does break up quickly (as expected), I don't run it for gain/distortion. Was looking for more of a Strat, straight into the combo, and that has been working out great.

Hi Justin, I would absolutely give the newer Jensen Blackbird 40 10" a shot with a Princeton. It has a stronger AlNiCo than usual, which makes for AlNiCo sweetness in the top end, while keeping the bass tight, almost or just like a ceramic. The voice is the classic vintage vibe, but with a wider range of useful tones. It's absolutely worth a try once or before your Eminence gives up the goods. Btw. I LOVE your playing. Marvelous!

@heikofister9739 have you tried the Blackbird 10? I have the 12” in a 1980 Fender 30 1x12 combo, which is like a Deluxe Reverb on steroids, and man, that’s maybe the sweetest speaker I’ve ever come across! Totally superb. Perfect link between vintage and modern. I just ordered a Celestion V-Type Junior 10” for my 65 Princeton Reverb, but eventually, might like to settle on the Blackbird 40 watt Jensen, if it’s as good as the 12” version, which still blows me away every time…

Hey, Justin! Love the video (and the one for the Deluxe, too). Roy Blankenship built me a Princeton years ago and put a 10” Eminence Patriot in it. It’s awesome. Might be a cool option if your current speaker bites the dust, and Eminence sells a package of IRs of that speaker pretty cheap so you can check it out without committing too much!

So funny... The Princeton was just a step up from the Champ back in the day. Never considered a real user. We used them in studio settings for certain things. But it was always the Deluxes, supers and Twins that got the job done. But they were easy to move around and if there just MR and Trbl EQs called for, the Princetons saved your back. It was always your good relationship with a music store to go and borrow one. As they were considered student amps. I think off the floor they cost around $175. And look at the hype and cost now. Little 10". Amazing !!!!

I totally agree on 12s in a PR. I have a 65 for decades and at one point I added a 65 reissue, mainly just to have a backup and something small to take out, but keep the real deal in the studio. I always heard of people using 12s so I figured bigger must be better and i got the RI with a 12. I know the guts arent 1 to 1 either, but I was surprised how different the two amps are. In the ballpark for sure, but over the years I came to the conclusion it was mostly the speaker and its relation to the cab that accounted for what i didnt like and that I liked 10s better in the PR. Great tips.

Another excellent video thanks!. Princeton Reverb is one of the ultimate amps. Great not only in the studio or in rehearsals, it is great live on small gigs, AND mic'd on big gigs. Soundmen and bandmates (especially singers) LOVE IT when you use a good Princeton. Great for keeping stage volumes pleasant. (Unless you play in a band of Gorillas and Neanderthals, then you may need to bring a Deluxe Reverb.😉) You NEED to get a BF or SF; the Reissues are brittle-sounding, and don't have the characteristics of the vintage ones. I tried them and was sorely disappointed.

This awesome! I’m always confused by how people crank the volume on their amps with the bass up high. It’s so flubby and farty. I understand that this is all subjective, and that some people like a farty flubby sound. Even if it wasn’t flubby, I still find all that bass so unnecessary for guitar. To each their own.

Oh yeah, the reverb hasn't worked for years, in spite of my having several amp techs to fix it. But I have external reverb which is more controllable anyway. Interesting I steward a hand wired 64 re issue Princeton reverb and run a zbrake mini in between the amp and speaker Get some great tones and is decent volume for the band I play in I do want to make a 12 inch cab for it and see what happens

I really enjoy your channel. Your playing and tones are awesome. How do you get your sound without noise? I did hear a tiny bit of noise with the Princeton on this video, but your set up is virtually silent other than guitar. I have great instruments and amps, but no matter what I do I have more noise than I want. I use a noise gate but I don’t like the way it cuts off sound when it still ringing and fading out. I even get too much noise when going direct to my computer. I can angle and hold my guitars just right to stay in the quietest spot. Maybe it’s my guitar room, the electric or something. Do you have any advice on this subject or a previous video you can reference? Thanks

I’m muting almost immediately with my volume pedal. I don’t use any noise gates or noiseless pickups or anything like that.

I ended up at the same EQ settings of 473 naturally. Pretty cool. Maybe my ear isn't as bad as I thought. You ever try EL34s in that Princeton? I'm curious what that'd sound like.

I run an old EVM12L in a 5e3 Deluxe. It has none of the Jensen bad habits and artifacts. More than loud enough at war volumes for gigging. Volume usually Noon to 3/4.

Very cool. I have one of those speakers. Never tried it with a 5E3. Very interesting!

That Princeton sounds stellar man. It must be loud in your garage. You obviously have good sound proofing in there or else you live in a remote location?
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s loud, but not very loud outside the garage. I do plug into the OX or the Revv D20 if I’m working after 9pm just out of courtesy for my neighbors.

Great video(s) Justin, thanks. How would you describe the diffrances between your Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb Blackface amps? Which one do you go to for which tasks? Thanks.

The PR is great for anything. The DR can be too loud in some situations. I prefer the DR for rock and for cleaner country playing where I need more headroom. Both mic up really well. I generally prefer the DR for recording, just because I can do so much with it. But the PR is no slouch. The PR has a totally different (and much cooler) tremolo circuit. Cheers!

Justin, your tone to “tape” is so great! (Btw this question is more general and came about from another video you did). Do you push the gain much on your outboard preamp on the way in or is it kept pretty pristine and we’re hearing mostly the mic’d WGS et65? In other words, is the preamp a huge component of your end result? Thanks!

I keep my pre pretty clean. But it does sound really cool overdriven. I’ll use it that way every once in a while, but it’s pretty rare.

Thanks! Appreciate the reply. Btw do you plan on making some t-shirts and hats, etc available for purchase? Be a fun way to support you. Seems they’d sell.. I’d buy a few. ✨🎸✨

I really can’t decide. They’re both so great. I guess if you made me choose, I’d say I lean a little toward the DR
