These settings work for a wide variety of 60s and 70s Fender amps: Deluxe reverb, Princeton reverb, Vibrolux, Pro, Bandmaster, Bassman (I've tried it on 6G6-B and AB165 circuits). Even Champs! Though those sound a bit rattier, for lack of a better word. Despite the treble being on 10 and the bass being all the way down, it has a full midrange to it. These amps get their mids as you turn them up. I know most of us have volume constraints; this is why I often plug it into my OX box or Two Notes Torpedo. I don't want my neighbors to hate me, so I only run my cabs wide open in the garage during working hours. I would very much NOT recommend standing in front of your amp cranked all the way up without hearing protection. Cheers!

Hey Justin love all your videos seriously watch everyone beginning to end just wanted to throw this out there... while I have worked extensively with black face Deluxe reverbs and Princeton reverbs they have just never been my favorite amps. I'm just more of a Tweed guy. To that end I recently purchased - off of Reverb- Lil Dawg Little Prince lunchbox head, the 5F2A circuit, the amp is built with a 6L6 and a tube rectifier putting out a solid 15 watts so that is my only vintage style Fender amp. However I also have this Strymon iridium and let me tell you, you can definitely use the same types of settings for the round channel on the strymon. With the middle knob all the way to the left is pretty much blackface territory all the way to the right is going to get you into the Tweed sound definitely drop the bass and turn up the treble gets the same result as you are illustrating here just a heads up to all my fellow subscribers on your Channel keep up the good work

I have been using this setting for many years. It’s a “trick” I seen Derek trucks using on his super reverbs. It’s a set it and forget it setting - so I placed the whole amp into the bedroom and let the sound come from the big gap under the door. BEST TONE ever… I feel it’s unmatched by a pedal. Great videos and great playing man. I’m tuning in

This video is gold! I saw Neil Young Ragged Glory tour as a teenager and it blew my mind , that sound he had out of a cranked tweed deluxe, it was the most amazing guitar sound ever, imprinted on my brain, at the time I didn’t understand what was happening! Been a metalhead for years but now as I get older I just want to have great tones and this reminds me of how to get there. Thank you

After watching your other video in which you are wearing the T Shirt with the settings on it, I picked up on these settings! Thought I'd give them a try and found great results riding the volume control on a strat down to between 3 and 5 cleaning up on the neck and then blistering on the bridge at 10. Only found this video when I googled where I could get the T Shirt from. Thanks for the settings, great advice

Thanks for great info! I have a '65 Deluxe (non-reverb) and '71, '74, and '76 Gibson Customs. The '76 has a maple fingerboard. I agree exactly on the difference between a Standard and Custom is the fingerboard....the maple one ('76) sounds fantastic but weighs a ton! I remember 16 lbs lol, but sustain and tone incredible....it's a backbreaker lol! I believe I let a '57 goldtop (I traded it for a '74 Marshall Superlead,. I was told the guitar was a reissue, BUT it had humbucking p/u's,and had lots of cracks with green in them! ) get away from me in 1983!!!...count YOUR blessings! Bitterness is such a kill joy...life is short. Serenity now, serenity now...There was a guitar competition here in New Orleans at Guitar Center in 2005....out of all the amplifiers on stage for competitors to plug into... I vividly remember the Deluxe Reverb reissue filling the whole store with the most incredible tube breakup. IT BLEW AWAY everything else amplifier or pedal wise when it came to overdrive! I can hardly wait now to crank up my '65 Deluxe to your settings! ...it will blow my ears off and travel right thru the 1950's thin wall house I rent lol, so I have to soundproof it. Thanks again Justin, stay cool!

I've got a 6G2 Princeton (brown panel) slightly tweaked clone, and this definitely works. crank it up, and time the tone control. it's a little more raunchy than the deluxe, and gets a little closer to the tweed Deluxe fuzzy thing. I've only really done it using a torpedo captorX into my studio monitors though, cause theres literally nowhere I can make that much noise... lol
@dustinthiessen
@dustinthiessen 9 ай бұрын
one of the biggest things that makes it work with my clone, is the addition of a grid stopper resistor on the cathodyne phase inverter, which prevents blocking distortion, that is usually unpleasant. an original 6G2 likely wouldn't handle it as well...

I agree with everyone who supports protecting your ears. I had an inner ear issue in both ears. Thought my career was over. It took finding the right ENT doctor to treat me. One thing I’ve found is using close back earphones create more compression on your ears. I use open back headphones now, almost exclusively (except on vocals and acoustic guitar). It helped me immensely. (I’m using the AKG K701 - now and I love it.)
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander 9 ай бұрын
Great to hear that you found a good doctor. I am very familiar with those AKGs; they do sound great. I can not use them for most of my recording situations because they just do not isolate very well at all. Either ambient noise (like a drum kit) is so high that I have to crank my cans’ volume, or I get click bleed on acoustic (which it sounds like you deal with as well). That’s why I use the cans that I do: they isolate so well that I can keep the volume levels low enough (I’m talking like 9-10:00, what most people consider to be barely on) that they don’t compress my ears at all. I am a HUGE proponent of extreme isolation. It’s the only way to listen quietly enough to take care of your ears long term. If you’re using those AKGs for recording, I would imagine your use case is probably very different from mine. The downsides to my cans for anyone else reading this is that they have a low-mid bump (a bit of a learning curve to figure out how the control room is hearing your tone vs what you hear in your cans), and they can make your ears sweat and build up a bit of gunk on the pads over time.
@TexasJackdaw
@TexasJackdaw 9 ай бұрын
@@JustinOstrander Thanks so much for responding. i totally get why my AKG’s won’t work for you in a studio playing with other musicians. In the same scenario I’d be using closed back cans as well. But at home - I find that even when recording acoustic guitars and vocals, as well as bass and guitars - I depend on these open back headphones. I literally lost my hearing of anything above 4K for over 4 months. I was close to suicidal since I couldn’t even enjoy music. My inner ear issues was finally diagnosed as eczema - which caused my ear canals to dry and crack, which allowed bacteria to enter my ear canal and do massive damage. Once it was cleared up, all I have to do is put a drop of olive oil on my finger tip and moisten the ear canal. It was a really dark time for me. I’d encourage all musicians who use cans to cut tracks to do that. Just a drop and rub on each ear canal. Most people who experience excessive ear wax issues have eczema and they don’t even know it. So just a good rule of thumb. Meanwhile, I have so loved your channel. I have friends in Nashville that you probably know, but won’t drop names in the comments. I just want you to know that, as your channel grows (and it will) you are truly reaching your audience. Me being one. Thank you, brother. 🙏

@@TexasJackdaw That's crazy. I had a friend who had impacted wax from wearing in-ears on a summer tour. He thought he was losing his hearing until the ENT doc pulled some peanut sized chunks of wax out of his ears. Your eczema diagnosis makes sense. Glad you are all good now!
@TexasJackdaw
@TexasJackdaw 9 ай бұрын
Exactly, Justin. I’ve used IEMs for years and ear wax build up is a real thing. The one thing I learned from my excellent ENT doctor was that the ear builds up wax to protect it. And by simply applying a dab of olive oil at the edge of your ear hole (that sounded weird … 👀) Will greatly reduce wax buildup. In fact, since I’ve been doing that routinely (every week or so) I haven’t had any wax buildup in almost 2 years. Good to know. I am finally back to semi-normal (reaching for a beer on the drum rise during a soundcheck some 15 years ago when my drummer hit his China cymbal pretty much ruined my right ear) and am mixing records again. BTW - I’ve got a song I want to send to you for your ear on it. A demo (yes, even a country demo! Lol) I’ll dig around to see how to send it to you. I’d very much appreciate your ears on this song. I’m signed to Expressive Artists (publisher) in Hollywood, but just don’t want to send them this song. They’re not the best place to try and get country songs placed in film/TV. Ha! I’ve gotta say I loved the 69 Custom best. But I would have loved to hear the Tele bridge pickup. Something I’ve noticed recording is that you dial this juicy tone with reverb and delay but then it gets washed out in the mix. Well done, as always, Justin - thank you. Piggy backing somewhat on a previous comment, do you have an opinion on attenuators, i.e. can you approximate the sound you're getting with an attenuator that doesn't cost as much as your amp (yes, I'm referring to the OxBox)? I would use this for both home (very quiet) and church (less quiet - apparently Jesus likes us to turn it up :).
@JustinOstrander

I’ll be honest. I’ve never used an attenuator. I’d rather just play a quieter amp (like a Princeton or Champ). I have a couple amps with power scaling (Lazy J, for example). The OX is so good and so versatile, it’s just worth the price of admission for me. Your mileage may vary!

Would you put the Super Reverb in the category of amps that this really does not work too well with? If what you are demonstrating is possible with an amp with a Mids pot, where would you set that pot?
@JustinOstrander

I have no experience with the Super Reverb. I would start with the mids knob off and adjust to taste.

Is that ‘69 Custom refretted? Or is it an original “Fretless Wonder” with the teeny-tiny frets?
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander 9 ай бұрын
Yep, refret. They’re medium height narrow frets. Buk had it done before I bought the guitar from him.

It’s great. The lower output the pickups get, though, the less singing sustaining overdrive

Ha! Generally I agree. I just don’t think it sounds right coming out of the speaker when playing power chord rock. Im thinking Back In Black. A very subtle room verb in post can be cool though.

Is the tele nicknamed "biscuit" because it looks like one? Or some other reason? Sounds amazing!

To be fair, I have a LOT of stuff muted in this track. It is bare bones aside from basic rhythm stuff. The point is to showcase the amp settings
