I am just now realizing that a majority of backpacking gear is just particularly shaped bags of feathers and balloons.

For my pillow system, I stuff my puffy into a buff that I stack on top trekology 2.0. As a side sleeper, it's the closest thing that I found to my home pillows in terms of height, loft and comfort while being lightweight. Also, thank you Justin for another detailed review :)

My favorite is the compressible Therm-a-rest pillow. It weighs a few ounces more then my others but for me it has been the number 1 thing that improved my sleep on the trail. These balloons don't weigh nothing and the Trkology strap is nice but in the end, I never found a inflatable pillow that gave me as good of a sleep as a real one. So I just got the real one instead. Now I let my friends use my Trekology and Klymit ones and wake up with a sore neck. Mhahahaha. On a side note It is kinda funny that the Trekology 15 dollar pillow can give all the big companies a run for their money. Good on them. I would say its time for rest to up their game a bit. Some of these pillows are highway robbery for what they are.

I find the Outdoor Vital pillow (2.8oz) combined with a custom 600 thread count pillow case (2.4 oz) to be the perfect choice for comfort. I’m a side sleeper and the height is fine. With the pillowcase the softness of the cotton keeps the ear comfortable. Without it my ear would sometimes hurt. Also with a pillowcase you can wash it after every trip prevent hair oil from building up on the pillow. Additionally this pillow is sturdy enough with the flex material to use as a sit cushion. If you sit on the ground cross legged to cook you will appreciate being 3+” above the ground. Much more comfortable on the sore knees! I love gear that has multiple uses… And lastly, it packs down so darn small. It’s a Winner!

Awesome review. I've been using a compressible Thermorest for 12 years and now prefer something more compact with extra height support. The Hikenture appears to check all the boxes for this side-sleeper. It's ergonomic, tall, supportive, compact, light, pad-strap and a removeable cover which possibly could allow for the insertion of extra padding if needed. And half the cost of my Thermorest!

I have been using the Trekology 2.0 this year after watching your other reviews. As a side sleeper I wish it were a little taller. I find adding a second packable camping pillow (from mountain warehouse) on top with a homemade pillowcase to combine the two the best mix for me.

Used to have a Klymit X pillow, and that felt like laying your head on a hard balloon. Now I use a Wise Owl foam pillow. It's cheap, not too big, and feels like a real pillow (albeit a small one like a couch pillow). Totally worth the extra weight in my pack.

I have the Exped mega pillow. It's nice, you can remove the sleeve to throw it in the washer after each trip. I do not fill my pillows 100% with air because it feels super stiff. So, I fill it about 80% so then my head can sink in a little. I'm also a side sleeper. Great vid!

I have 3 pillows: the Trekology 2.0, Trekology Deluxe, and the Outdoor Vitals. I use the OV in my hammock as it is the smallest and you don’t need a full sized pillow when hanging. For ground dwelling I used to use the Trekology 2.0, but now use the Deluxe exclusively. I’m a side sleeper with pretty wide shoulders. Even at home in my bed I put my arm under my pillow and sleep that way. The Deluxe, being a bit shorter than the 2.0, really works with the way I sleep. It maxes out my pad straps for sure, but it’s comfy as heck. Thanks for the continually awesome content Justin!

I agree on the need for pillow height Justin. So I use a Trekology Pillow inflated about 80 - 90% and then a Thermarest Compressible Pillow on top for real comfort. I side sleep, the pillows seldom slide away on me. Its a super comfortable combo. My choice is a small bit more bulky, but my sleep system is my non negotiable and Ill gladly bring an extra bit of weight and bulk to get a better night sleep. Sleep like you say is super important when you are out active day after day . . . . . .touring and camping out of a sea kayak in my case. Bad sleep will ruin a multi day trip/ expedition with the fatigue it causes.

The Nemo Fillo inside the pillow pocket built into Nemo sleeping bags is extremely underrated. As long as my sleeping bag doesn’t slide away from me, the pillow is staying put. I am a side sleeper, and extremely particular about pillows, and it fits the bill for me. The pocket ends up arching the pillow a little and adds a decent amount of height.

My problem with putting pillows in the hood is that when I shift from sleeping on my side to my back, the pillow gets out of position. I usually shift multiple times a night and if I am in the right sleep system, it doesn't wake me up at all.

I am a bigger guy and also a side sleeper. I have tried a lot of setups, but the best so far is two trekology 2.0 pillows stacked on top of each other. I fully inflate the bottom pillow and strap it to my pad which allows the top pillow to become an adjustment pillow. I can inflate it more or less depending on how much or how little height I need. Throw a shirt or sleeping bag liner over it and you got a pretty comfy setup.

@@JustinOutdoors I thought of a crazy idea after a trip I just got back from. What about creating a small mound with dirt under your tent where your head is going to be. I've tried a handful of camp pillows. Originally used the thermarest foam pillow (no bladder) which doesn't pack very small. Just folds into itself but fairly comfortable. Then i bought a nemo fillow and usd it for quite awhile. Then i went to EMS drool pillow no bladder but a nice pillow. Slippery outer cover which i did like. Then i went to the decathlon helium. It comes with a thin foam topper and a removable/washable cover. The helium has an air bladder and push button valve so you can adjust the amount of air to your liking. What i recently did with this pillow was stuffed my EMS drool pillow inside the pillow case which created a much more comfortable foam topper. It made this pillow way better!! My only complaints with this pillow are the shape. Not a fan of rectangular shaped camp pillows. Atleast not ones with an air bladder. The more curved pillows like the aeros or trekology are much better in that respect. Also it does not come with pad straps. But for $15 i think its a great bang for the buck and it is semi customizable! Still looking for my favorite new pillow. Thanks justin for all your great reviews! Sleep is so important! Hike on!

I love my Trekology Aluft v2, & as a side sleeper with wide shoulders + a long neck, I just put a folded garment underneath it to give it the extra inch or so that it needs. I'm actually drafting a custom case for it to incorporate a layer of that much high-density foam, on top. When I have a little more space in my bag, I'll usually treat myself by taking my Sea To Summit Foamcore pillow in Large. It packs to a smidge taller than a Nalgene & half again as wide, when rolled correctly, but it is flabberghastingly light; like, my ruck, though full, is never so heavy that I will notice the extra weight from swapping out my Trek for my STS - the difference is negligible. I want to save up for a Deluxe size (about the size of a home pillow) one for car camping, but my name's not Rockefeller. 😭

Thanks Justin for many good reviews. But some times a piece of equipment shows it’s real value how it is used in combination with other equipment. Aeros Premium Pillow Regular - Sea to Summit is absolutely perfect inside a mumui sleeping bag hood. when it is inflated to 2/3. Then it will never slide away. If you then add ALUFT-2.0 - Trekology pillow attached to the seeping pad outside the sleeping bag filled to 1/2, you have a really great sleeping system. This has worked very well for me between +5C to -16C as a mumui sleeping bag sleeper. I have used this system with 3 different sleeping bags. I always put a buff around my pillow to keep them clean so I only have to wash the buff.

I'm a side sleeper with very broad shoulders and need a lot of height to support my head without getting kinks in my neck. I've found there are no single pillows that fit the bill. I use two: The Hikenture pillow featured at the end of this review topped with the Wise Owl foam pillow. Yes it adds quite a bit to the load out but I get all the comfort and support I need. You can't put a price on a good night's sleep.

I ordered and tested the Decathlon and Treckology 2.0. Personally I much prefer the Decathlon. Much softer/more comfortable to me. I don't like the Treckology as it feels like my head is sloping down on it away from me. Also its shape where the head rests is shaped like a grill which I clearly feel, and the cup shape only allows one right position for your head. Also found it really noisy when moving around on it. Only downside of the Decathlon to me is the valve closing button which is hard to get on, the Treckology is better in that respect but it's not that important a detail. I'm 6 feet 90 kg - the Decathlon doesn't feel short to me. I deflate it a little bit for optimal position and comfort. Im a side sleeper, shoulders average I guess.

Odd person out here, but I might sleep any which way and find 3"+ pillows incredibly uncomfortable for anything but side sleeping.... But I can't sleep without one, either. To anyone who has a similar dilemma, Klymit's cush seat pad makes a perfect pillow for me: I can fold it (or not) to change the height depending on how I feel like sleeping, and my buff slipped over top keeps it folded. It also has little holes that work well for ear relief. I do wish it had a strap, but perhaps I should figure out how to attach one myself.

I evidently guessed right, just received the Hikenture the other day. I unfortunately can't use my hammock on an upcoming trip and needed a pillow for ground sleeping.

I'm using the Klymit Drift pillow at about $30. Not an air bladder, it's shredded foam with pillowcase. Large size is awesome. They make the inflatable X-Pillow but I'm not a big fan of the design. I'm a side-sleeper using the new Klymaloft XL hybrid pad.

So the Hikenture pillow with the sea to summit insulated sleeping pad seems like the best combo. The sea to summit pillow with the pillow lock would seem a better choice but I may want to use other pads and then it would slip around on them while the hikenture wont

To fix pillow movement, I just don't fully inflate it so my head will make a depression in the middle that will hold the pillow in place. My pillow is a Cocoon Hyperlite. I added foam inserts to it for more comfort.

You could do a video just on Nemos pillow options. There isn't much out there comparing their full line up. Ended up piecing together the specs and reviews when I went to buy a new pillow. Landed on the fillo luxury. Started with a Thermarest compressible then moved onto a Hikenture (largely based on your review) but found it a bit cold and small.

Hikenture in cart. I've been using a Trekology for a few years but it just isn't tall enough and the lack of a fabric cover does bother me especially in hot weather. I actually found myself giving up, tossing the Trekology to the side and stuffing a bag full of clothes at times to get more height. Most of my camping I don't care THAT much about weight. I'll have to see if the 9.6 ounces is too much when backpacking though.

I've had - Marmot Stratos - tiny Exped air - light; has tabs for strap use Sea to Summit Aeros Premium - light, just about decent size Sierra Designs Dri Down - just acquired, stand by if the Sierra Designs doesnt cut it, I will probably try the Decathlon or the Trekology; it's getting to the point where I don't care about pack size or weight anymore, just want an attachment system (might just hack something), and a comfy night sleep....

Had to come back and watch this. I used that Trekology Deluxe last weekend and it sucked. Definitely got the kink in my neck and had to stuff all my extra clothing under it. I've never had that problem with the standard Trekology 2.0. Folding a shirt under it certainly helps it a little too but still good by itself. Also have the Hikventure too. That think is great, but have left it behind more often than not due to weight. Might go with it more often now though. I think the Aeros Premium regular makes a great little knee pillow but agree it's not very comfortable at cradling my head. Also have the Nemo Fillow regular or smaller one they make. Super comfortable ony back, but of course too low for my side. Also makes a good knee pillow.

My trekology is horrible to sleep on. The part against the shoulders is higher than the rest of the pillow, which makes that your head/neck is in a very weird and uncomfortable angle. I now bought the Nemo fillo Elite luxury. Really looking forward to that one to arrive.

Hey Justin, would you be able to weight the hikenture without the cover so its just the TPU bladder? I've looked around to see if anyone has done this and so far no one has. Anyways, thanks for the vids and keep it up!

The trekology 2.0 was the 4th hiking pillow I tried. I really love it. It’s just not high enough for this side sleeper. I always have to stuff things under it to raise the height so I don’t get a kink in my neck. I wish they would make a 6” high pillow. Lol I don’t need a wide pillow. Just a high one.

This ☝🏼. completely agree. I’d gladly carry the extra weight. Extra height, soft topper, ergonomic shape with the shoulder cutout, and a fastener so it doesn’t slide around.

My choice is the Trekology², and my closed cell "butt pad" underneath. The pad gives me the height I want and the pillow (yeah, with the buff, of course) are great, but the best part is that it is adjustable (one section or two) and no extra gear to carry, cut I carry my butt pad anyways! Double duty is the way to go!

Have you ever taken a look at the Fillo Elite? It swaps the memory foam padding for a thin layer of primaloft insulation. Definitely not quite as comfortable as the regular Fillo but it's a really nice in between option considering it still has the super soft pillow case. I think it weights are 2-3 oz? I love mine, switched from a Trekology to it and never looked back.

Personally myself it seems they all require some diy mods. Add Velcro if the sea summit needs it to other branded pads. No big deal. As well adding a custom sew pillow case can help. Add a extra sleeve in the case and stuff with clothes for added height

I use a $5 Ali inflatable pillow and put a buff over it. If it breaks I buy a new one... Don't have a strap. I usually put my pack at the head end which keeps the pillow from escaping in the middle of the night.

Justin! Could it make your videos and review even better if you could add the perspective where a specific equipment work best. E.g. for pillows. Dose it work best inside or outside sleeping bag. With quilt. In hammock etc. I like your videos, just a suggestion to even make them better.

Have the Treklogy, its better then stuffing clothes in a stuffsack, but just pull the trigger on the Hikeventure per your recommendation. What the heck $17 for thicker pillow and a strap, sounds like a winner. Thanx’s

Damn wish I had seen this about 4 hrs ago. I pulled the trigger on the air head because of your part 2 on pillows. $57 CND. Now I find out they changed it and you dont even use it any more. Well when I get it Ill try it in my hammock. Should work there. That shape is better for a hammock. Almost bought the fillo over it. It was $3 cheaper. Maybe Ill have to have 2. 1 for the hammock and 1 for the air pad. Good reviews. I like the way you do them. Cheers from BC

Update. Air head did not work at all for me on my air mattress. I'm a side sleeper on an air mattress. However. With about 50% air or maybe a bit less it made my hammock sleep excellent. I would recommend it for Hammock camping. Now I have to get a pillow for my Big Agness air mattress. I'm thinking the cheaper Hikenture since sleeping on the ground is my last choice. Thanks for doing these reviews Justin.

Not a backpacker but a mom of 3 so I'm trying to limit what we pack for annual camping trips. Do you review compact large capacity camping cookware? I tried to limit our camping supplies to just one small foot locker but trying to find cookware to feed a family of five is difficult to fit

I use the TaR compressible pillow (small), which is a foam one. Quite heavy and bulky compared to the inflatable ones, but as a beginner I just don’t find the inflatable pillows comfortable. I am a side sleeper, but don’t like sleeping on my shoulder. So I let my down side arm rest on the pad, then put the pillow on top of that arm, then put my upper arm on top of the pillow, I put part of my quilt on top of that arm and then my head. I guess I just sleep in a very weird position. But as I am “stacking” my arms, pillow and blanket at least I don’t need a high sturdy pillow 😅 I don’t think the compressible foam pillow would provide enough height / support for most side sleepers.
