I've been working on improving my casting skills as of late. 3D printers are a game changer for making models. My next project will be to test if I can cast metal onto a ceramic piece. It should be fun.

Nice work on trying to level up your casting skills. looking at the video it seems your metal was still too cold as it was lumpy and not smooth when pouring. might have been pushing the electric at or above its top range. if you very lightly run a graphite rod around the inside of the crucible you will be able to feel if there are any unmelted bits in there (don't stir or whisk the metal as you will just pull air into the metal the goal is only to insert and lightly move the rod around to see if there is any unmelted bits).

Thanks! For sure I was pouring too cold. The Crab Mad failed even worse, freezing almost immediately. My most successful pours have been less than completely full crucibles that I really let soak at the peak temp. Not a problem at all for silver, just the copper blends.

Great video thankyou Sir. My gas furnace can handle 8 ponds, not sure I can, and I just bought my first 3D printer. Would you tell us why you went with a resin printer? It's funny how 8lbs. can be so hard to control when held on a pair of tongs.

The resin printer is better for really smooth and complex models. It's a real pain to deal with though. Between the two, I much prefer the filament to the resin just for the lack of mess. 8lbs is a lot. You could pour quite the gargoyle or something...

@@JustinsMakery Thankyou. I graduated college as a jeweler. Casting was a big part of what we did. I preferred hand built peace's but casting is faster and so cheaper. I like your vacuum base for the flask. Is that Teflon around the hole? I built my centrifugal caster but that wouldn't work for larger castings.

@@joelongstaff7601 Tomas Wittelsbach had great online talks about Zbrush and jewelry casting. Started a platform so people can learn and share ideas. His Monday live stream ended. Right now I’m 3-d printing for pottery molds but like to try other casting. His advise was find a local jewelry caster and stay focused on design. Haven’t found anyone in 2 years. Keep these videos coming.

@@scottmcguirk4848 Are you doing slip casting or sheet clay molds? My hobby is stained glass and for that I learned to cast porcelain to form panels in wall sconces. I like to do the wax carvings to form the molds. I just got my 3D printer and haven't thought of pottery molds. I will lookup Tomas Wittelsbach. Thankyou.

My vacuum base is a modified pressure cooker. The gasket is a silicone mat that I cut a hole in. Seems to work well.
