I used to manage storage facilities. I tried to work with folks so they would'nt lose their stuff...I'd go as far as I could until my higher-ups said "no more partial payments." One boss told me "You can't make their story your story." I said "Their story could easily be my story, I struggle too." My grandfather said once "Everyone needs help sometimes." Bless this woman. I pray she finds herself a solid job and lands on her feet.

@@mikethetoolman8776 The U.S invites this doesn't matter on which side of the politics banner you are. In Europe this is much less a thing. Sure their are homeless people, but somehow you see non of them under an overpass. Why? Because we pay taxes for them to have some sort of income and shelters that are actually safe, clean and decent. Addictions get treated with Methadone trough healthcare, which is a much better option than the crap they get on the streets, If they want additional help after that they can get it.

So yeah it's an EVERYWHERE in the United States problem. Even the Republican states cost of living and rent is way too high. It's a problem with housing and companies not paying people what they're worth and also lack of mental health care which the Blue and Red states also do almost mounting about.

Because cities can make money off of the homeless, with tax increases being more justifiable. As well as fund raisers for them as well. It's disgusting, like a lot of things, the homeless rarely see any help from all this money that does get raised on their behalf. My opinion on the matter anyway.

Of Course the unit we lost was all of our pictures, baby things, old black and white photos of family etc. It was gut wrenching. She found some of her silverware at a thrift shop close by. She explained it was hers and what happened, but she couldn't afford to buy it all back. If the shop owner was like Knate she could have gotten a few things back. Let's all be Knates!❤

The weight this takes off of your heart, your mind and most of all your self esteem is unbelievable. God Bless every one of you who help those who aren't able to help themselves for whatever reason. As a former homeless woman, I can say you have NO IDEA how monumental a gift like that is: if you've never been homeless you can't even begin to understand the depths of misery or how life changing things that most people take for granted are. Most people don't start off crazy, but the experience quickly (often just a couple of days) transforms them: it's heartbreaking to be present the moment the light goes out of a person's eyes. The world needs more people like this...

Honestly, I believe more help would be available, but...those that give DO want to help the person, and that it doesn't go to a drug habit. We all have worked hard for our $$, and for it possibly go to buying drugs from the illegal markets just exacerbates the help some want to help the homeless with, but there is no guarantee that those hard earned $$ will go to things shown in this video! There are many that end up going to grocery stores to help pay for food, knowing the $$ are going to quality nourishment for the person purchasing the food. How does one single out those homeless that are not addicted? NOT that the addicted don't need help, as we all know they need help as well, but as mentioned, $$ towards drugs isn't necessarily where average folks wanted it spent.

This is a good question with no easy answer. The short form answer is if you really want to help someone, observe and use your best judgement then be prepared to "let go" of your lack of control over how the money is allocated. The long form answer is full of intricate catch 22's. I don't recommend homeless organizations (unless you are going to personally provide oversight) because every one that I went to in Los Angeles took donations for themselves and their staff so it never reached the homeless. I was homeless for over 10 years (got my 2nd masters degree while out there), and the only reason I didn't lose my mind was my relationship with Jesus Christ. People observed me, and came to my bus bench and spoke with me because they could tell I was "normal" and assisted me (but I had just as many people do heartless things). However,I'm aware that I am in no way the norm. While the homeless population largely consists of addicts, they all didn't begin that way, and they all didn't conduct their lives in a nefarious manner that "warranted" their predicament. While I met truly terrifying, violent, dangerous, "ankle bracelet" wearers, I also met engineers, school teachers, mathematicians, and just regular people who had bad breaks in life: they didn't start out as the "final product" you see now. Homelessness is so extremely traumatic in EVERY WAY IMAGINABLE: no one can understand outside of experience. People RARELY stay sane for more than a few days & many turn to drugs just to cope or to deliberately be out of their minds so they can detach from the trauma. So the long form answer is that there are no guarantees or guidelines, and there is a backstory to pretty much everyone you encounter so I'll circle back to my short form response with one caveat: giving can't come from a black and white place when dealing with a demographic of grays. @@Powerstroke98

Your compassionate approach sank into my soul one day when a friend and I saw an old man walking down the street crying his eyes out. My friend ran to him and when I reached him, I used the Knate approach. He asked for money to buy a coffee, as he had just been refused service and humiliated in front of customers. I include you in my daily prayer list.

You'd be surprised at how many homeless are exceptions to the rule. It's just that we normally distance ourselves from them because of the image in our mind. Even the one's who're addicts and in need of mental assistance are often exceptions to the rule. Especially when you approach these people in a humane way. Next time you have time, a few extra bucks, and see someone in need; take a moment and ask what you can do to help. Don't ask questions about why they need things either. If they ask for cash, give 'em a few bucks from your pocket and explain that you only have a credit card on you or something and ask what else you can bring them. A cheeseburger, soda, pack of smokes, water, headache medicine, new clothes, or whatever. A month of gym membership with a shower is usually less than a hundred bucks, even. Imagine suddenly having access to a shower and clean clothes for a month after being homeless and showerless for six months. I don't have to imagine because I was there once. I made a friend outside of a rehab center (people are usually more kind around there) who after finding their own foothold allowed me to shower and use their washing machine once a week at their apartment. It took me two weeks for a job to finally accept me after I was clean, shaven, and presentable. That was ten years ago. I've since turned it around and have lived in my own apartment for five years or so. Granted, I had to find a really shitty apartment without a shower or washing machine but because I'm no longer an eyesore, people don't turn their back to me. Reach out and help someone. You may just turn their life around with a simple offering.

I don't think she's an exception. She's one of many, many good people who obviously went through incredible difficulties. I think the majority of homeless people are generally very grateful for any assistance they receive. We need to look at each other as human beings and not the labels society has placed upon us. When we see another human suffering, it should be our instinct to provide assistance if we're capable rather than casting judgement as to what got them into the position their in.
