Just some quick notes, mainly as a Canadian to any non-Canucks: 1) The Beer Store-- not a single store, but the Ontario chain-- still exists. 2) The cop was played by Canadian comedy icon Tom Harvey, the epitome of the comedy straight man. Some may remember him from John Byner's show BIZARRE, which was a mainstay of Canadian comedy reruns for aaaaaaaaaages (and from where we get Super Dave Osbourne). 3) Of course, it's all just hosered-up Hamlet. Hell, the brewery's even named Elsinore. 4) It was a big deal that Max von Sydow showed up in this. He was never as goofy on screen again, and he brought his usual dignity and professionalism to it. Those very few international actors who would appear in Canadian movies at that time (Richard Burton, for example) always let you know how much they were slumming it for a paycheque. 5) FWIW, the loonie didn't exist at this point. That was still four years away.

When this was filmed, the store was called "Brewers Retail", the name change to "The Beer Store" is a relatively recent thing, 1985. (per wicki) The filmmakers were also banned from filming in a Brewers Retail store, and from using the name "Brewers Retail". The filmmakers instead built a replica of a Brewers Retail store at a cost of more than $45,000, calling it "The Beer Store". Filming also took place at the Old Fort Brewing Co. in Prince George, British Columbia. The emergency vehicles used during filming were all real Metropolitan Toronto Police squad cars. The ambulances used briefly were on loan from Metropolitan Toronto Ambulance.

Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis were on a sketch comedy show called SCTV which aired on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, a government funded network. When a government mandate was issued saying a certain percentage of the show had to be "distinctively Canadian programming" the cast thought it was absurd. As a sort of sarcastic protest, Thomas and Moranis decided to just put on some toques and parkas and drink beer in front of a map of Canada, just improvising moronic Canadian stereotype talk to fill the requirement. They were quite surprised when It ended up being the most popular segment of the show, leading to a best selling album and this movie..

My enjoyment of the McKenzie brothers increased by many magnitudes when I found out this backstory behind the characters. I've also heard that in the original SCTV segments the beer they were drinking was real. They would just get tipsy and improvise for 20 minutes and then just use the best 2 minutes for which ever show they were taping.

Bob and Doug MacKenzie got their start on a Canadian TV show called "SCTV" aka "Second City Television" as a sketch called "The Great White North" made to poke fun at Canadian stereotypes - this unhinged lunacy is what happens when they get a budget... "Throwing an octopus on the ice" is a Detroit Red Wings playoff hockey tradition - back in the old days you only had to win 8 hockey games in the NHL playoffs to win the Stanley Cup, so they would throw one octopus. Now that you need to win 16 hockey games in the NHL to win the Stanley Cup they throw 2 octopuses.

I loved SCTV and Strange Brew in High School. The reason they created the McKenzie Brothers is a laugh as well. Since SCTV was a Canadian show, the broadcasting laws back they required that the show had to have a certain amount od Canadian content, so Dave and Rick came up with the brothers and their show The Great White North.

In case no one has told you the word 'hoser' is as you can tell used as an insult. But how it came into being is from in Canada a typical Canadian pastime is playing outdoor hockey. To play the game however the rink has to be prepped before hand to make sure it's read as it can take hours to do. And so this is done at the end of each game to make sure it's ready for the next game. This is done by hosing down the rink to alleviate all the scratches and damage done after a game. This duty is typically done (in friendly games) by the loser of each particular match. And so the losers, would be called "hosers' This is where this insult comes from. so the boys when using the term are using it as a derogatory insult meaning loser.

And when Rick Morainis heard that he said, "What is Canadian content? Do they was us to sit there on the couch eating Canadian bacon and drinking beer while wearing tooks (Canadian for toboggans), and he and Dave Thomas looked at each other and said, yes, that ought to do it.

If SCTV is available to view, I would recommend watching that. SCTV is how we got to know comic actors who eventually made it big on the big screen. Movies used to be more of a treat over TV before it was so easy to view movies as it is today. This is largely why the movie "Ghostbuters" was so amazing. Actors from both Saturday Night Live and SCTV team up to fight ghosts. (Plus we had the "Alien" actress included.) It is amazing that a move with same production values as the TV show ever was produced and released. This is the earliest TV show to be in a theater that I know of. I think the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special was next in 2013.

@ejl423 It is unfortunate that Brett Butler self destructed with her addiction issues and that led to a premature end to the show.

" That was no goal eh, they were in the crease" one of my fave lines. My birthdate is 10/21/59 like on the video game. "There's no way I wreck this truck eh, it's a beer truck eh"

There are but a handful of comedies where they hit you with a big laugh IMMEDIATELY from the opening shot. It's like this with Kentucky Fried Movie, it's like this with Johnny Dangerously.

It should also be mentioned that Mel Blanc voiced Yosemite Sam, which should have been the giveaway. This film really is an underappreciated classic. It seems to be somewhat overlooked, in many people's memories. Perhaps, it's because SCTV was a bit more obscure than SNL. I know for me, it came on late - after the Letterman show, which came on after the Johnny Carson Show. SCTV might be worth a look. It's basically the Canadian SNL. In fact, the "Official" (fictional) story goes that the went to NBC with a programming idea, and because they were turned down, they decided to start their own TV station. (SCTV) SCTV is a bit different than SNL, in that it isn't live. However, it's a collection of skits that represent the operation of a TV station and its diverse programming. Few of the skits were recurring, but Bob & Doug's segment was. There was also a soap opera, at one time. I think there was also a dysfunctional kid's show. In a way, it was a lot like UHF, and probably inspired it.

You don't have to eat donuts unless you want to. If somebody shows up with donuts and you weren't planning to eat a donut, don't take one. Don't get me wrong, I'm a baked goods freak and I love donuts, but at my age I can't eat one every time somebody offers one. Even if it's a jelly.

The OBVIOUS STAR WARS influence in this movie is UNDENIABLE. Sydow is Vader, her dead father represents ObiWan , Rosie is Han , McKenzies are Chewy and Luke. Not 100% with some changes to whom representing whom, but they also metion Star Wars several times to make it IN YOUR FACE, loved that as a kid, and loved SCTV

There was a little confusion by a small subset of people who thought Dave Thomas owned Wendy's as the owner did the ads himself and also is Dave Thomas.
