Hands down, I love your version much more than the drawing!!! It's beautiful! I think the cuff is meant to be gathered on the ribbon so that it's fuller. Back then, I think it was the norm to sew/tack collars and cuffs onto garments so that they could easily be removed and applied to a different garment. Again, you translated and created a jewel from our past in an excellent tutorial! 💕 Thank you very much for this channel!

And the collar/cuffs were removed for washing. I agree about the drawstring effect of the ribbon. This pattern turned out beautifully.

I prefer your interpretation best. I agree with someone else who said, "...to be gathered on the ribbon...", I think it would then hv fitted. Another success! Well done and thank you for working with difficult stuff; in some respects, it's almost like another language❣️

It's so pretty, now I want to make them! I did notice on Row 11 it says to "miss 5" after the chain 5. You skipped 3, but apparently the counts worked out, so no biggie! I love it! I have been enjoying this series of mystery vintage/antique crochet patterns! Thanks so much for sharing all that you are learning in the process!

It's very possible that it is the right size. Not all cuffs were at the wrist. In the 1860s there were elbow length sleeves (i.e. the pagoda sleeve) and it may be for a day bodice that has a shorter sleeve, maybe for summer wear. It did come out quite lovely and I think that you did a fantastic job.

I am loving this whole vintage crochet series!! Thank you so much - I am in awe of your ability to work with just any size yarn including incredibly tiny #30. Can you imagine using #80, which I think is the smallest of all - like sewing thread perhaps? Older women in those days must not have been able to make these patterns since they wouldn't have been able to see well at all. In 1864 there were no electric lights after dark, so once it got dark, candlelight was it.

Actually I know that pioneer woman in the northern parts of America and Canada used to wait for winter to do the really fine crochet because the sun shining on the snow gave such a wonderful clear light. Sitting by a glass or open window gave better light than firelight or lamp light, and sometimes a better light than the glare of summer sunshine. Mind you summer was the busy time in homesteading, people literally worked from "sun up to sun down" so there was not a lot of time to do fine thread crochet.

Love this one! I think you’re meant to use the ribbon to size the cuff making it more rufflely. I really liked that you used the right thread. That made it easier to see what happened. That row 12 though! Very confusing. So glad there was a picture of the final result. 👍🏼💜

I love this series of crocheting mystery vintage patterns! I wanted to say that I enjoy the videos no matter what yarn size you use. It's amazing to see the tiny, detailed yarn work. However, it's so difficult on the eyes and sometimes even the hands/joints, and so I fully empathize/sympathize with you on that. The yarn size you use does not detract from the videos at all, in my opinion. Thanks for the fun videos!

Remember it could be a frilly (over sized and decorative) cuff so not to big at all. I don't think this was for tight wrist cuff. You did amazing. Huggs❤

You can still use it as a cuff, just use sewing thread to gather at edge then sew to a shirt or dress sleeve.

It is very common for older patterns to not use consistent terminology or instructions throughout. Also, the ribbon is to help gather the cuff so it can be tacked on. Cuffs and collars were commonly taken off for laundering and used on multiple garments. In looking at the photo, I don't think the thread gauge is far off. Very nice interpretation!

I have to say, you have the patience of a saint with these tiny hooks. My hands cramp so quickly holding the yarn, let alone the hook. I can spin this fine ready for plying a 3 ply, but i couldn't do what you're doing well done. You're amazing, and i can listen to you all day long. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️

This is really pretty. Tie on cuffs were de rigeur in that time. You could change up plain shirts/bodices with lots of collars and cuffs. You'd gather it up not do it flat. Yours was fine. Anyway you should write your version out in modern terms as I think it's prettier than the one in the pic.

My hat is off to anyone who can crochet with the "real" crochet thread that is so hard to see. I never could do it and now that I'm old, I surely can't do it!! But I do agree that I like to see what the pattern actually intended for the article to look like and you just can't achieve that if you're using thread 5 times too large. So I feel like if anyone is having problems seeing, perhaps they need to do the old lady thing and get a magnifying glass. 🤣😝 They will likely need one eventually anyway. (Old lady wisdom.)

You may have the correct yarn. The reason it seems way too big to us may be because some of the dresses in those days had sort of billed sleeves instead of coming in tight on the wrist. I tip my hat to you for being able to see to work this pattern. I would need that magnifying glass for sure. Thank you for sharing this with us.

This is so pretty. I like your version better than the one in the picture as I think the ruffles around the edge spoil the line and make the whole thing too 'busy'. Thank you so much! ❤️ I just finished two of them and they turned out great. I began with just 65 chains which is the right size for my wrists. I skipped row 4 because I want to sew on 2 or 3 nice little buttons on the cuffs to close them. Instead row 4 I did 8 rows of row 5-8. Also I had to be a little bit creative because 65 chains in the beginning didn't always matches with the number of coming stitches. 😊 I recommend to do the last row which is the one all around the cuff. It makes it look kind of complete. Thank you again. I crochet along with you and it was so much fun. 😃

Love the way you explained everything. Based on the size, I would venture to say this is probably a men's ruffle cuff since it is 1860's. Men would also wear lace ruffles on their sleeves during this time period. Also for women, it could be gathered slightly to create more frills.

On all my old vintage patterns, like this one, it is so helpful to be able to follow the picture instead of trying to figure out some of the confusing written instructions! (I find a graph even easier, but I think those came along much more recently.)

BEAUTIFUL!!! It still works. Love, love, love your channel. Especially the mystery ones. I could watch all day. Just an FYI...from the 1840s to about the mid 1860s, you did not turn your work. You always had the right side facing you. In vintage crochet you fasten off, cut and joined at the beginning of the row/round. There was no slip stitch. You joined where you start. They also did not add things that they assumed you knew. Verbiage was different back then

I have a suggestion that might help with your being on/off camera. Place something on the couch (like a sticker or a pin) where the center of your camera frame is and just make sure to try to keep your hands right above it. That might help with not always having to look through the camera lens/screen to make sure that you're not off-center. Also, I'm very impressed with your ability to crochet using such a minute thread and hook!

I envy how you can use thread and steel hooks, the smallest I can manage is size 1 (2.35mm). Still, I enjoy watching you work, and I think your cuff came out just fine. Perhaps we can bring them back into fashion?

Your interpretation is just great. Either you're supposed to gather the ribbon tight or have a very wide sleeve. With that sized yarn I don't believe you could work it with a smaller hook. You have way more patience that I do. I can't imagine doing this with the poor lighting back then. Otherwise they'd all end up with eyestrain. It turned out very pretty.

This is so interesting how brains work differently, I don't have experience with older patterns aside from your videos, and for every row, I understood it the way they intended immediatelly. When you showed the photo at the end, my brain was like: well yeah, obviously, exactly as written, super clear! this is also the way I write down notes when I self draft crochet pieces

I think the cuff you made looks much better than the picture and i'm glad you did not do the final row all the way around. if i was making that to use, I'd prefer the solid edge to go against the clothing for the cuff. Beautiful work and fun to watch as always. My husband laughs to hear you work through some of the mystery patterns sometimes. :)

Love it! I imagine the instructions meant one long and chain two in each stitch of five chain. I imagine it might have been a cuff for a coat or robe sleeves. Still you did great! The wording was difficult but you got it in essence!
