1) What is the integrated task about?
In the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you first read an article and after that you listen to a lecture. In the article a writer states his arguments regarding a specific topic. In the lecture the lecturer opposes these arguments by stating counterarguments. In the ETS practice test you cannot listen to the lecture, you have to read it.
2) How to take notes: Draw a table
Before you start writing the integrated essay, you should take notes. Write down a few keywords and arrange them in a table because this helps you write the integrated essay later. When reading the article take notes on the left side of the table. When listening to the lecture write down your notes on the right side of the table. If you arrange your notes in this way it will be easy for you to structure your integrated essay. Remember that a well-structured essay will improve your TOEFL Writing score considerably!
3) Writing the introduction for the integrated task
In the introduction you must first state what the article and the lecture are about. They deal with the same topic, thus you only need to write down that topic. Second, you must state what the writer’s and the lecturer’s points of view are. They are directly opposed, so make sure you make that clear. In the video I explain how you can do that.
4) Writing body paragraph 1 for the integrated task
In paragraph 1 of the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you should explain the author’s first argument and the lecturer’s first counterargument. Make sure that you write at least two sentences regarding each argument. In the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you must show ETS that you are able to write an essay in English. This means that you must show that you know a lot of vocabulary, that you know English grammar, and that you can explain what the writer and the lecturer are arguing about. You can show this if you use a variety of words in your integrated essay and if you explain the arguments of the article and the lecturer correctly.
5) Writing body paragraph 2 for the integrated task
In paragraph 2 of the integrated essay in TOEFL Writing you should explain the author’s second argument and the lecturer’s second counterargument. Again, make sure that you write at least two sentences regarding each argument. It is important that you do not use the same words you used in paragraph 1. Make sure that you use synonyms especially when introducing the arguments. Have a look at my essay and my TOEFL Writing template for the integrated task to see how this works.
6) Writing body paragraph 3 for the integrated task
In paragraph 3 of the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you must explain the author’s third argument and the lecturer’s third counterargument. Again, you should write at least two sentences regarding each argument. Remember to use different words to express what the author and the lecturer say and use different transitions. This paragraph is your last chance to demonstrate that you know a lot of vocabulary and that you can write a very good integrated essay.
