TOEFL Writing Integrated Task Practice
I show you my solution for the first integrated task in the ETS Practice Test Set 1 for TOEFL Writing (link below). I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing and I tell you tips and tricks how you can get a high TOEFL Writing score in the integrated task. You also get the template that I used in the integrated task in TOEFL Writing. Remember to practice using this TOEFL Writing template several times before you take the TOEFL test. Getting a high score in TOEFL Writing is no magic, you only need to know how to structure and express your ideas.
This is the first integrated task in the ETS Practice Test Set 1 for TOEFL Writing:

TOEFL Integrated Writing - 7 Hacks to Boost Your Score: • TOEFL Integrated Writi...
1) What is the integrated task about?
In the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you first read an article and after that you listen to a lecture. In the article a writer states his arguments regarding a specific topic. In the lecture the lecturer opposes these arguments by stating counterarguments. In the ETS practice test you cannot listen to the lecture, you have to read it.
2) How to take notes: Draw a table
Before you start writing the integrated essay, you should take notes. Write down a few keywords and arrange them in a table because this helps you write the integrated essay later. When reading the article take notes on the left side of the table. When listening to the lecture write down your notes on the right side of the table. If you arrange your notes in this way it will be easy for you to structure your integrated essay. Remember that a well-structured essay will improve your TOEFL Writing score considerably!
3) Writing the introduction for the integrated task
In the introduction you must first state what the article and the lecture are about. They deal with the same topic, thus you only need to write down that topic. Second, you must state what the writer’s and the lecturer’s points of view are. They are directly opposed, so make sure you make that clear. In the video I explain how you can do that.
4) Writing body paragraph 1 for the integrated task
In paragraph 1 of the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you should explain the author’s first argument and the lecturer’s first counterargument. Make sure that you write at least two sentences regarding each argument. In the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you must show ETS that you are able to write an essay in English. This means that you must show that you know a lot of vocabulary, that you know English grammar, and that you can explain what the writer and the lecturer are arguing about. You can show this if you use a variety of words in your integrated essay and if you explain the arguments of the article and the lecturer correctly.
5) Writing body paragraph 2 for the integrated task
In paragraph 2 of the integrated essay in TOEFL Writing you should explain the author’s second argument and the lecturer’s second counterargument. Again, make sure that you write at least two sentences regarding each argument. It is important that you do not use the same words you used in paragraph 1. Make sure that you use synonyms especially when introducing the arguments. Have a look at my essay and my TOEFL Writing template for the integrated task to see how this works.
6) Writing body paragraph 3 for the integrated task
In paragraph 3 of the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you must explain the author’s third argument and the lecturer’s third counterargument. Again, you should write at least two sentences regarding each argument. Remember to use different words to express what the author and the lecturer say and use different transitions. This paragraph is your last chance to demonstrate that you know a lot of vocabulary and that you can write a very good integrated essay.

Hi Mohib, that's an excellent question! You should first state the argument of the writer and then the counterargument of the lecturer because this way you show that the lecturer casts doubt on the writer's argument. I would like to know if it is really needed to write in this lenghty way by providing arguments and counterarguments. What I have noticed is that it makes you use a lot of time and you may run out of it for other points you can make. Also, won't they judge those bunch of words frequently used like "the reading and the lecture are both about / the author challenges the claims / he is of the opinion that" as "pre-made ideas"? Especially with the software they use to sort of scan the passage? One more point I want to make is why then do they say that an effective reply is between 150 and 225 words? By using the aforementioned structure the reply is going to be around 280-300, which, me personally, am not able to write in 20', yet. This kind of structure leads me - and others I suppose - to just miss out other important points, don't you think? I am really looking forward to your reply!

Next, when I needed to talk I just used these sentences and improvised in the middle. I practiced this about 4 times with online speaking practice videos. These templates and the practice videos made me more confident in what to say. The subject didn’t really matter anymore after that😅 I hope that helps!

I use it so I don't have to write "the writer" all the time. That would be repetitive.

Hey Juva, I really admire what you are doing right now. However, I am quite confused about your table usage. When do you switch between rows during listening? Normally if it is a reading passage, it is a lot easier to switch between rows because of seperate paragraphs and corresponding distinct contents. Nonetheless, it is not that clear for listening part since there are not paragraphs apparently. Also, integrity between ideas for each row on our table may not even exist because we do not know the next sentences that will be stated by the speaker. For a short example, some keywords on the table may correspond to next row's. How do you achieve such unity per row on the table? Should we just write down and seperate them at the end? Thanks in advance :) take care,,
@juva
@juva 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Oğuzhan, I'm so glad you like the channel :). In the integrated task in TOEFL Writing you first read an article and then you listen to a lecture. When reading the article you put the arguments the writer gives on one side of the table, when you listen to the lecture, you should be able to see where you have to put the lecturer's arguments because they are direct counterarguments to the writer's arguments. Hope this helps :).

Hi Juva. I have a question. The suggested word count is between 150 - 225. But, when I practice, I have more than 300 word counts sometimes. Do you think it will affect the score?
@juva
@juva 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nang, if you go over the word count this does not lower your score. Rather, it may improve your score because the word count is a minimum requirement and by writing a bit more you show that you can write a longer text in the time given.
