K-5 STEM Team Building Activity

During my 5th year as a STEM Lab teacher I have discovered my new favorite activity for kindergarten through 5th graders (and probably into high school) that provides seemingly endless differentiation for each student, allowing some younger students to surpass the upper grade students while cultivating cooperation, collaboration, and communication.

My students absolutely loved this activity. I saw the leaders and students with perseverance arise to the occasion. The encouraged students to keep working. Thanks for sharing.

How long did you give the teams to build each type of tower? Is 5 minutes enough?

I love this activity. Would you please explain how did you make the strings and rubber bands that the the kids are using to hold the cups with?

Pipe cleaners work best because they are easy to grip and do not sag like string. Thick rubber bands that are only slightly smaller than the cup so it doesn't get crushed. I used 2 rubber bands per quadropus in case one broke. But that also makes more resistance which might be too difficult for smaller hands to pull apart. Let me know how it goes :)
