The strongly upswept curve towards the tip on the Ontario SP-5 is there to give it machete capability in heavy brush. And although the tang on the SP-5 is not wide like on the Ontario RTAK II, it is still much stronger than the tang on that Kabar (I am saying this as a fan of Kabar Knives as well). The SP-5 has been a standard use blade in US Military Special Operations SERE Kits for the last 3 decades and is well proven. Even though I am more of an axe and hatchet person, I love my SP-5 and would trust my life on it in a tough situation. As for looks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder obviously, but I love the way the SP-5 looks and feels in the hand. Cheers, Jason

The clip point does nothing really for use as a machete. Thest machetes usually have drops or bubble ends. It's great for back cuts and penetration though.
@RockyMountainBushcraft
@RockyMountainBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
@@DonnieBAllDay Not true my friend. That upswept curve is found on most machetes except for the Barong machete and maybe 1 or 2 others. It increases the cutting area that contacts vegetation during the swing. I am not trying to give you a hard time as I think it's great that you are sharing knives on your channel, but do I suggest you do some more research on this and you will see what I am talking about. Cheers, Jason

I like they way it looks that upward tip you can get a back cut..and thats what is made to do its a fighter...I just pick one up and it's a good Knife and it Chopps Great...I have Esee 5 and 6 and Tops Operator 7 and some KABars and alot more but I like this Knife the long Blade and its light..I dont think he gave it a fair Test in this video...go watch the other Video he has on the Sp5 and he talk about the Knife totally different..

@@RockyMountainBushcraftagree 100 percent...I just think he is a little biased because he doesn't like the looks of the sp5. It's a very capable blade. The upswept curve gives it more capability. It's a well designed knife for survival. There are better knives but the SP5 gets a B+ grade in my book.

The tang on the Ontario is much more substantial than the Kabar. The Ontario sp5 is modeled after the marbles trailmaker, which has been extremely successful with Outdoorsman for many many years. The Bark River 1909 Michigan Bowie is also built from the same platform. Very tried-and-true design. Great review my friend.

@@DonnieBAllDay Hi Donnie, are you referring to the Kabars that break at the handle junction, or the Ontario SP-5? I have definitely seen Kabars break there, but I can't recall ever seeing an SP-5 breaking there, and I've been reviewing knives with baton tests since 2008. I know there is one guy on KZfaq with one of the newer ones that broke with an obvious bad heat treatment from the factory, but he is only one I've seen so far. But you make it sound like the knife is failing all over the place when that is simply not true. Regards, Jason

@@DonnieBAllDay I do have knives I just buy for the looks. The Original KaBar is one of them. This version doesn't do it for me. When I take a blade outdoors it's all about functionality. I like the clip point on the SP5 when it comes to looks but it's not functional so I removed it. Took it to the belt sander and now it has a clip point but an effective one. Not a trailing clip point. It has been my favorite big knife for many years. If I go bigger I take a machete. The original KaBar (USN mark 2) is a sweet knife for sure with a lot of history. I have this design from several makers. It has a place in my collection. Not in my outdoor tool kit.

You are absolutely right about the profile of the SP5 the clip point was so weird looking . I ordered one a couple years ago and after 5 days of having it in hand I took mine to my knife making belt sander and reshaped it . I've actually hard used the SP-5 and many other Ontario Spec-Plus knives out in the wilderness for months at a time. I've never had them fail on me. That includes prying and heavy batoning in sub-zero weather in the High Rockies. Way too much is made of full tang knives vs less than full tang knives by people who only read opinions on the internet vs hard using them in real life. The Ontario SP-5 is still in use by US Military Special Operations personnel as a survival knife. It is more than strong enough for most people's needs. As for the one breakage I've seen on KZfaq, I'm guessing that was a heat treatment issue, or, the guy doesn't know how to baton (he didn't show video of how he broke it). Cheers, Jason

Should've put the tang right in her hand to let her see for herself.

Oooh, well, have to disagree with you on this one DBAD. I much prefer the OKC SP5 in this versus. Actually everything about it is better, at least to me, including looks. That thin stock and rat tail just doesn't do it for me. Love that SP5 clip point too...prefer the SP10 though with that belly. Great job on the vid anyways.

The BB isn't a rat tail. It's a stick tang, the same as the SP5
@BrewCityRider

@@DonnieBAllDay It might be a cool vid if you cut off that damaged kraton handle and rehandle it with stacked leather or something. This way we could also get a good look at the tang that OKC calls full tang.

@@BrewCityRider well, i would never go stacked leather but if I decide to care more about the knife, I might regrip it

Clip points are a matter of opinion. As far as the sp 5 yes clip point is great if used as it’s original purpose (fighting). But as a bush craft blade the sp 5 could have been a thicker clip point unsharpened. I wish they would have made both. I also have to disagree. It’s a nice looking blade. Not too good looking you don’t want to use it. It’s a user, I’m ok with that, a down dirty blade meant for business.

@@DonnieBAllDay haha yeah. We all know we have those knives we care about and don’t wanna get messed up. The SP is not one of them. But at 50.00 can’t beat it.

Why anyone wants to buy a knife if they think the scales need to be changed or a sheath need to be changed spend more and get a better knife. Otherwise used till you can't.

I never once question the quality of these knives. I'm 100% honest on design factors. I said they use stick tangs. They do. I said one uses a rubber handle that demolds with heat. It does. I said the other uses a round slippery leather stack handle. It does. I never know where you see me bashing them. The SP5 is ugly to me, but it works like a demon. I think when people love something, they hear you wrong when you mention the flaws

I don’t believe you understand the difference between a hidden tang and a stick tang. Secondly leather doesn’t have half the durability that rubber does as soon as weather isn’t favorable. $120 for a kabar vs $56 for a SP 5 . I’ll take the SP5 every time. Kabar is not what everyone tries to claim. I didn’t like it when I was in the military surly don’t like it now. It’s a fighting knife that isn’t a good fighting knife. Really the SP 5 should compare to a regular kabar and the big brother should compare to SP10 in that way they can’t compare. My opinion is based on a outdoorsman with a background in Boy Scouts and military. I’ll take a SP 5 any day of the weak.

The KA-BAR Utility was never designed to be a fighting knife. It was a grandfathered designed from a Remington turned USN hunting platform

I disagree with I think the sheep is very nice and it's made in New York and I like both knives the SP5 is a wonderful knife and it does its job it's a workhorse it's great for shopping it's just a great oil around life I can't believe you're putting it down but that's my opinion doesn't mean I don't like you I just disagree with you on it that's what makes the world go around some people like chocolate some like vanilla but I am not going to put down either nice and I'm not going to put down either shief

What did I say that wasn't true? Do they have stick tangs? Yes. Does the BB have a slick round leather stacked grip? Yes. Does the SP-5 have a moulded rubber handle? Yes. They both work great. I said that. I can't see where the distain is since all I did was describe them 100%
