The strongly upswept curve towards the tip on the Ontario SP-5 is there to give it machete capability in heavy brush. And although the tang on the SP-5 is not wide like on the Ontario RTAK II, it is still much stronger than the tang on that Kabar (I am saying this as a fan of Kabar Knives as well). The SP-5 has been a standard use blade in US Military Special Operations SERE Kits for the last 3 decades and is well proven. Even though I am more of an axe and hatchet person, I love my SP-5 and would trust my life on it in a tough situation. As for looks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder obviously, but I love the way the SP-5 looks and feels in the hand. Cheers, Jason

The clip point does nothing really for use as a machete. Thest machetes usually have drops or bubble ends. It's great for back cuts and penetration though.
@RockyMountainBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
@@DonnieBAllDay Not true my friend. That upswept curve is found on most machetes except for the Barong machete and maybe 1 or 2 others. It increases the cutting area that contacts vegetation during the swing. I am not trying to give you a hard time as I think it's great that you are sharing knives on your channel, but do I suggest you do some more research on this and you will see what I am talking about. @@RockyMountainBushcraftagree 100 percent...I just think he is a little biased because he doesn't like the looks of the sp5. It's a very capable blade. The upswept curve gives it more capability. The tang on the Ontario is much more substantial than the Kabar. The Ontario sp5 is modeled after the marbles trailmaker, which has been extremely successful with Outdoorsman for many many years. The Bark River 1909 Michigan Bowie is also built from the same platform. Very tried-and-true design. Great review my friend.

Not a trailing clip point. It has been my favorite big knife for many years. If I go bigger I take a machete. The original KaBar (USN mark 2) is a sweet knife for sure with a lot of history. I said the other uses a round slippery leather stack handle. It does. I never know where you see me bashing them. The SP5 is ugly to me, but it works like a demon. I think when people love something, they hear you wrong when you mention the flaws
@richardhenry19692 жыл бұрын
I don’t believe you understand the difference between a hidden tang and a stick tang. Secondly leather doesn’t have half the durability that rubber does as soon as weather isn’t favorable. $120 for a kabar vs $56 for a SP 5 . I’ll take the SP5 every time. Kabar is not what everyone tries to claim. I didn’t like it when I was in the military surly don’t like it now. It’s a fighting knife that isn’t a good fighting knife. Really the SP 5 should compare to a regular kabar and the big brother should compare to SP10 in that way they can’t compare. My opinion is based on a outdoorsman with a background in Boy Scouts and military. I’ll take a SP 5 any day of the weak.

The KA-BAR Utility was never designed to be a fighting knife. It was a grandfathered designed from a Remington turned USN hunting platform

I disagree with I think the sheep is very nice and it's made in New York and I like both knives the SP5 is a wonderful knife and it does its job it's a workhorse it's great for shopping it's just a great oil around life I can't believe you're putting it down but that's my opinion doesn't mean I don't like you I just disagree with you on it that's what makes the world go around some people like chocolate some like vanilla but I am not going to put down either nice and I'm not going to put down either shief

What did I say that wasn't true? Do they have stick tangs? Yes. Does the BB have a slick round leather stacked grip? Yes. Does the SP-5 have a moulded rubber handle? Yes. They both work great. I said that. I can't see where the distain is since all I did was describe them 100%

It's not fair because you favor the K bar knife more before you start this video So that makes you biased you can't do an honest judgment on this video

I favor one before the other prior to kilming this vid because I've been using both. I already know them each well. I didn't have that opinion without testing them. It's a very honest judgement.
