LOL! I think you've just rediscovered the design philosophy of of South East Asian large blade designs (Malaysian parangs/Filipino bolos/itaks and Thai E-neps, Hmong tribes, etc). They are indeed multi-tools especially for our environment. From chopping to fine wood-working and game processing, these blades have been in service for generations to us because they work. They're also fighters if needed!

I bought one of these when they first came out. I must admit that it was intended to be used as a small machete. I took it on a campout back in the mid to late 90's. I needed to chop some firewood, but my ase handle was busted by a friend. The big bowie in my truck was my option. I chopped firewood and gained a new respect for this blade and the strang grip was one of the best I have seen. That cold afternoon made me realize how useful this blade is. It has held a place in my gear for 20 years and I use it all the time. Good reveiview keep up the good work.

SP5 made in the U.S.A. is an awesome value for anybody! A true value to the person on a budget that wants higher priced quality. I bought one just because... didn't really need it but for the price why not? It's in my big knife rotation now that includes the Esee Junglas, BK9 and Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri. My SP5 came literally hair shaving sharp.

I have this knife and it's a newer model. It doesn't have a sharpened swedge which I prefer, the black coating on it is rough but totally tacti-cool, the older models have that shiny coating similar to what Cold Steel uses on their Black Bear Bowie. The SP-5 is easily my favorite survival Bowie knife. The name is laser etched not stamped into the blade so there's no weakness from that. I'm very happy they made these changes to the SP-5. I will be buying another as a back up to put in my bugout bag for sure. Very rarely would I buy another exact knife, the only other knife I will also be buying again is a Kabar 1217. These 2 knives have withstood the test of time and are very worthy to have multiples of. I highly recommend this knife and I have a huge duffel bag with many different kinds of Fixed blade, full tang knives. I know what to look for and this knife is definitely worth owning. Whatever your 'thing' is that involves the use of a full tang knife, this knife will do it well!!!

Man I really liked this video and definitely want this knife. After watching your 65 dollar bushcraft kit video and this video it gave me an idea. You can put together a whole 5 piece bushcraft / survival cutting tool kit for around 150 dollars perfect for those on a tight budget who want to get out in the bush without spending that much on just one knife. This knife the sp5 for around $58, the martini condor timberjack for around $20, the letherman sidekick for around $35, the kabar doziar folding knife around $20, and the banco Laplander saw around $20. Those are all things you have reviewed also. I would love to see you put out a video for this since I don't make them right now. Thanks. God bless.

Very cool! I think this is my favorite video you made so far! Love how it was all action, the music, and very entertaining and informative. I was waiting for Liam Neeson to come out and start slaughtering a group of bad guys, lol. Really like the knife. So far, the Condor Alert has served me very well, and along with my hatchet that is a black widow, I think I just need that perfect little knife, Tops bob, Condor bushlore, something of that nature.

Michael StJohn The SP8 is great for batoning wood with that saber grind it will take a beating. It's also heavy knife/machette. I like the durability of the 1095 Steel. And I was able to appreciate even more after I removed that Black Coating they put on it and replaced it with a forced patina (White Vinegar). It's hardly a tactical weapon without a point in the front . And, finally it comes with an awesome dangling leather sheath with four snaps. And its made here in the USA. There are some video on youtube that give great reviews like chopping a coconut in half with no problem. I just might do a review of it sometime in the future. I hope that helps. mww

Nice one Aaron. I don't really care for the shape of the blade at the tip but considering the price I think I could overlook that. A little off topic but we talked about the Boker JTN a few weeks ago. Well don't go out of your way to get one. It absolutely is a beautiful knife but the handle is very small and slippery. However I also picked up the Benchmade Bushcrafter (green) and although the handle is also a little small, it's very grippy. It's not a chopper with a 4.25 blade but it's very nice. Take care. Mike

first thought while watching this video if you need a "tactical knife" this bug you might as well carry a short sword, this is more of a machete or prang rather than a Bowie (yes it is a Bowie shape but it is getting into the size range of machetes) as a Machete its grate it does what you would want a small machete to do but it will not be in the same price range, for the same price you could buy a machete, a Mora or other bush-craft knife and a folding saw.

@shotokido678 9 жыл бұрын
I was pretty shocked to see how well it did at, well, everything. In my mind I expected it to be weak at chopping, because it's a full flat grind rather than a high saber, to suck at batoning, because the sharpened swedge would chew through the baton, and to be unwieldy for detailed work like feathersticks, because it's over a foot long. Wrong, wrong, and wrong!
@MatoNupai

A honking knife is for those one knife idiots. I prefer a two knife solution. A big knife for batoning Another smaller knife for carving traps, food prep, etc
@shootermcmillan
@shootermcmillan 9 жыл бұрын
MatoNupai I mostly agree with that, I carry 3 knives with three different profiles. BK9 -sabre grind for batonning or light machete work or clearing Jeff White Bush knife-Convex grind for general camp use. Mora robust- scandi grind for carving or small detail + leatherman + folding buck saw or sierra saw depending on what I'm doing. If II'm car camping I will throw the axe in lol I LOVE TOOLS!!
@shootermcmillan
@shootermcmillan 9 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Aaron, the SP51 is too bulky to be really useful. I carry the BK 9 as my big blade, but my hands are larger than yours (xl....xxl when I can find them) so I'm not troubled in the least by that thumb ramp. My only complaint is the semi clip, as Ethan Becker calls it.............it eats batons, and the sharpened swedge on the SP5 will as well. Also I think that a 3/16' saber grind will split better than a 1/4" full flat. Lastly that SP5 is just not attractive to me. I'm no fan boy and the BK9 isn't perfect.....but I'd go the extra for the Becker even though the Sp5 is definitely a solid value.
@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical 9 жыл бұрын
shootermcmillan Great comments, and good points. I was surprised that the sharpen edge is thick and does not hurt the baton stick any more then the BK9. Like you said and like I tried to share, it is a good multi tool, but not perfect.

I feel the same way about the looks...It's the handle that does it for me. I'm sure it's comfy , but it reminds me of all those cheap-ass Rambo knives from the eighties. It would look much sharper with some nice handle scales.

Seems like the ultimate LARP knife. Too big for fine tasks like skinning and cleaning game/fish or for food prep, but not the right edge grind for efficient chopping and wood working. You'd be better off with a smaller survival knife with a scandi or saber grind plus a hatchet. Have the right tool for each job instead of the wrong tool for every job.

@BigDaddySwingingMeat
@BigDaddySwingingMeat Жыл бұрын
Well, when people go boar hunting (wild pig hunting) they typically use blades that excel at stabbing (they often call these blades "pig stickers"). Stabbing is also useful in self defense situations too which I assume would be a "tactical stabbing" scenario lol. Both situations involve stabbing into living flesh in order to neutralize it.
