No man, don’t bye this hype, its a beautiful place but kalaripayattu is overrated, it is NOT the first martial art by any means, Boxing, wrestling and prankration dates baack to 8th century BC! Bodhidharma was born on AD 400’s! Plus there are straightforward and effective martial art systems all over the world that predates this, even in India. Senegalese wrestling Aadimurai etc. People always faught!

@@ekarthikn97 still na, 8th century BC is 200 years before 6th century BC! Plus boxing, wrestling and H.E.M.A are still effective to this day! Why should we take false credit purporting bogus claims! If any real expert scrutinises all this will fall apart.

Yes i know bodhidharman , he was a yogi , scholar , ayurvedic treater and martial artist ...i have a seen a movie about him which is in tamil language known as *7am arivu* starring Suriya . people in india may not know much about him but Chinese are well known about him. There is a saying that when Chinese people were deeply affected by diseases and hardship bothidharman left india and settled in china to treat them. After treating them he then decided to return to india and that time again people in china were getting sick , So to stop this diseases it was adviced that after the death of bothidharman he should be buried in the soils of china to stop this crisis. He also had wife and his son who were settled in India while he was in China. He is the one who taught martial arts to the people of China and also known for creating all kinds of martial arts and mind training. That's all heard about him.

I have practiced Kalaripayatt for about a year with discontinuities in between, because ofcourse I was lazy to get up so early. We had to be present in the Kalari(the floor, dug beneath ground level) before sunrise, oil ourselves up and practice in east-west direction our eye-level raised as if looking at the rising sun, 5 days a week. The first few days of practice were harsh, its unlike anything, I felt I needed a stretcher to carry me since my whole body was aching in places I did not know existed before. And it did not even have any weight carrying excercise as in the gym. It was just full stretched kicks("Kaal Edukkal") with strict body posture with hands and eyesight raised, and lots of choreographed, exaggerated body movements as mentioned in the video. And the Gurukkal( Guru, instructor)) told us that it was for improving flexibility, balance, joint strength, stamina and agility. But when days went by, with more practice, man did I not feel those things building up inside my body without even me knowing it ?! I could feel the body balance, when I would accidentally slip and fall and my body would instinctively comes to a gripping balance without falling down, almost like a cat. And Jaby is right, there are animal stances and movements too. Like Gaja vadivu (elephant stance), Marjara vadivu( Kind of cat-like smooth movement), Mayoora vadivu (peacock stance) and such, aimed at building your core and leg strength as well as balance and flexibility. There is a saying about Kalaripayattu which when translated roughly means "Your body should be your eye", meaning you should practice it so much that your body awareness and instinct becomes your vision so that you could defend an attack even if it comes from behind you. There is also a weapon in the wooden weapon training called 'otta', a short thick curved club(like an elephant tusk), which when practiced rigorously is said to make you defend yourself even in sleep (meaning, when the attack is from close range and without having the time for your senses to gather what is happening. Pure sharpening of instincts). It is even beneficial to just learn the initial body conditioning ("Meyyorukkam"), if you are not really interested in weaponry, just as a fitness routine. But even that is an ultimate test to your fitness, I feel like. The movements may not require as much power as in the other martial arts, but the quick, prolonged, agile, and exaggerated movements would tire you down quickly. Learning the whole course would take lot of years of practice, while some talented people do excel in it within fewer years. You would not see Kalaripayattu practitioners with a beefed up body. They would be lean and often lanky, but they would be flexible, agile with strong joints and great stamina. You would feel their strength in their iron-lock clutch in hand-to hand combat. I had only reached the wooden staff practice when I dropped it before moving away for my University studies. There were also little tips I got from Gurukkal like "Try to be aware of even the tip of your toe when you practice", " You may even practice Kalaripayattu movements in your mind, if you dont get to practice for long" which were also helpful while I were practicing. I remember he would never let the students sit down and relax if we were tired in between practice. He would just give a bit of a time-off, where you would not be allowed to sit idly, but we were supposed to walk around tired and out of breath(like how agile aware dogs are- is what he used to say) to relax our breaths. At that time I would think things like why is this guy torturing us like this, and his words almost felt like non-sense to the inexperienced me, but with time you would come to learn how valuable those words and his experience are. The effect of Kalaripayattu practice happens in our own body awareness and mind. From personal experience, I feel it brings some kind of discipline and peace of mind and control over one's on body and emotions. I feel like it hones you to be a tireless fighter, definitely for the physical fight, but more for the mental one, called Life. The effect is almost spiritual. So, that was my ode to Kalaripaytattu.

@@SD-pb2by I kind of feel like it has not got its due recognition , like say Kung-Fu, probably because 1) The language and the history of it are limited to a small population within the country. 2) Efforts are not taken to propogate the martial art form .The experienced Masters usually live a humble, minimalistic life. 3) It does not come off as as flashy as its East Asian forms. So I felt like letting people know how it "feels" like, rather than how it "looks" like. There should be efforts to preserve this martial art or it will eventually die out , once the aged Masters would be no more and the younger ones get busy in other profittable professions. Even us Keralites seem to have forgotten about it, unless we are reminded about it on Onam, get nostalgic while living abroad, or when there is a reaction video of it on the internet. It would also be worth noting that it is not a martial art people should learn if they imagine themselves flying around and taking kicks like Vidyut Jamwal, within a month of starting to learn it . The practice requires a lot of patience, perseverence, and to an extent some discipline (all of which I did not seem to have for long, unfortunately). They don't teach Vidyut Jamwal tricks or even kicks in Kalari. It is not an art of showmanship, but it is more like a way of living, or a very challenging yet beneficial routine(I wonder why people go to the gym, when they could be going to Kalari at a much lesser fee). What Vidyut does is more gymnastics and parkour, for which his Kalaripayatt training might have benefitted him, perhaps(no, definitely).

Interestingly the British banned kalaripayattu because some of the mercenaries and fighters at that time could fight with armed British soldiers carrying guns with just their bare hands and some rulers of kerala had such guards thus the ban emerged. Also the actor Vidyut Jamwal is also trained in kalaripayattu since the age of 5 you should watch some of his practice videos like when he does push ups on standing glass bottles. The final and most restricted form of kalari is all about 'marmas', which are the vital pressure points and they are Varma kalari or marma adi. Since it is lethal, the teachers were very particular about who they imparted the knowledge to. So if a boxer faces with a kalaripayattu expert who knows about either of these, he might just not make it to land a punch

There was one thing missing in this video, that a proffesional in kalaripayattu can compmetely paralyse a person with just 1 finger. And yeah obviously its not taught before he becomes a legend in the fight. So its not used commonly

Yup, if someone with ill intent has the knowledge of all the body pressure points, they can paralyze or even kill them. There is also a nerve pinch technique that actually causes death. There is a reason why the Britishers were afraid of this art...

@jaby koay...read more about the marma (pressure points) vidya (Technique) in Kalari MARMA POINTS Marmas are certain vital points of the body. A marma point is a juncture on the body where two or more types of tissue meet, such as muscles, veins, ligaments, bones or joints and 'where the Prana is present'. There are total 108 Marma points in the body in which 64 are considered as kulamarma (deadly points). These points could be used to heel or to harm. If these points are pierced hard, it could result in trauma or even death. A kalari masseur uses the Marma points to heal. The mind is considered as the 108th marma. The other marma points are classified for better understanding according to the physical components: Mamsa Marma - muscle Sira Marma - vessel Snayu Marma- Ligament Asthi Marma- bones Sandhi Marma - joints

I had practiced Kalaripayatt for about a year with discontinuities in between, because ofcourse I was lazy to get up so early. So, that was my ode to Kalaripayattu. (I had written this down as a separate comment, then I saw this comment, which I am sure no one would notice among the comments on how beautiful Amy is. Yeah she is beautiful, but this martial art form needs to be known about too, and preserved.)

I am not really sure where you would find in the Southern Kerala though, where the style is called (Thekkan Kalari- South Kalari) but you would find Kalaris in almost all districts of Kerala. It's a 3 hour long movie, but it's there on Hotstar, with English subtitles. It's a beautiful movie. Yes, THIS is the speciality of Kerala. It is a DANGEROUS art form. It is extremely hard to learn, and execute. It requires YEARS of training. For the information of everybody, the British, when they invaded, ruled, and looted India, they closed down all Kalaripayattu schools, as they realised that it was too strong for their armies, proving how cowardly they were.

They poisoned him in his food...but bodhidharma knew this and ate the food anyway as per the peoples request..he gave his life anyway for them...also he had a family and never seen them again...his family roots are said to still live in tamil nadu in india...during his stay there he taught everything he knew...one of them was budhism.... thought u shouldnt be misdirected☺️ Also it is said that the teqniques he used then was so advanced but lost during time...it is even said that there was an advanced form of hypnotism and control of the five elements...which will be too much to believe now...anyway proud to be an indian...😍 Hope u would include this in ur next video♥️♥️♥️

This is stylized combat.. like kung fu, aikido and wing chung... it is great as an art form or excercise and as an Indian I highly recommend this to be practiced as a tradition and it is something to be very proud of.. but as a martial artist I have to say it is highly impractical for street fights or self defense and is super weak against ground and grappling attacks... Kusti which is a traditional form of wrestling in India is more practical as a self defense.. and can be used in MMA.. Also: its an opinion I don't mean to be disrespectful..

Jaby, that monk you were talking about is known by the name Bodhidharma and he was a prince and king to be of the Pallavas. He left his home, family and kingdom, and went first to Indonesia and then to China. He had such a vast knowledge in mostly everything (tis said that he created ayurvedic medicines for diseases of today about 1500 years ago). He began teaching the people there the exercises and self defense forms (which was developed into Shaolin Kungfu). And he was God-like to the people in Ancient China (dated back to 500 AD) and we even have a film in Tamil, 7aum Arivu ( transl. Seventh Sense), showing some of these details in it..

Kalaripaiyattu is actually ancient and the very first Martial arts of the world. And many monks travelled at that time and learned the art, and again travelled in the different part of the world. Eg china Japan thailand etc. And got improvised in the respective regions. So yes it is the worlds first martial art.
