The best beginner surfboard is unique to every person but requires a little forethought. What are you trying to achieve with your surfing? Are you honestly ready to drop down from a big beginner longboard?
This video answers all.
Never have I seen so many people getting into surfing like I have this year.
Many people are lured by the beautiful experience of catching a wave however enter the surfing world a little uninformed about some of the basic elements of surfing; namely - which surfboard to use.

As a beginner I love my 7’8 foamy (Olaian), 8’ from a surf school felt too heavy to steer. Also enjoying inflatable boards (Gong) from 6’3 to 9’. They provide a bigger volume than foam and now come with rubber rails towards the tail and FCS2 fins.

I am glad you have mentioned about the "cool" factor about surfing as it has always been like that around this sport. I have a large amount of surfboards as part of my quiver therefore the one I have been surfing the most is my 7 foot foamie that can handle pretty much everything from 1-2ft to 6ft waves. It lives inside my Van and it is my best friend forever! Don't be fooled by what someone will think of you holding a foamie, just get out there with any kind of board you might have and have the best time ever. If that was the case Italo Ferreira won't be one of the best surfers ever, he started surfing with a Styrofoam container lid. Have you not seen JOB surfing Pipeline with a foamie ?! Go foamies !!! LOL KKKKKKKK

I been surfing 3 years and my foam board by far has the best stories so far. By the end of the day everyone is assuming I been doing this for years. Jerry Lopez from Costco 100 bucks. Lighter than traditional foamies so I can whip it when I feel frisky and it catches almost anything I look at😎

I tried a long board a few times and then instantly bought a 6’6 foam funboard around 50lt (similar to the one kale recommended) Perfect and easier to handle than a 9” long board. I’d say especially if you’re a smaller adult going straight to a buoyant foam fun/hybrid board will most likely work for you

Hi Kale, I am an beginner/intermediate surfer, I started with an high volume board, but some time ago I moved to a shortboard improving a lot the maneuver and I love it. Now I am a little confused about different boards for different conditions, in details in smaller and less powerful waves is it better to increase the volume or just having a different board shape?

I'd be interested in your thoughts on an oversized groveller as a beginner board. Currently learning on a 5'10" × 22.5" × 2.75" 43L board. It's a big wide tail at about 18" and feels rock solid when I manage to pop up, while being easier to manage in surf when compared to the 7'6" mini mal I also have access to.

I think you're absolutely right. I'm able to catch basically all the waves I paddle for and surf down the line on my 7'0 soft top. Just starting of trying some little turns and trying to pump to get more speed. Everyone tells me to go look for a hard top board now from about 7'0-7'6. I'm 75kg 180 cm. I think I would rather indeed look for a foamie of the size you showed in the video. I also feel more confident on them

Hi Kale! Love the videos! I'm eyeing up the specific board you mentioned in the video and have a few questions. Coming from a foamie myself, Catch Surf Round nose fish, I was wondering how stiff this board is. Ocean and Earth mentions it's the epoxy range, but what does that mean? Is it an epoxy hard board wrapped with the grippy soft top? Does it have a more "real surfboard" feel (meaning very minimal flex)? I've heard similar raving reviews about the mick fanning range and Softech has recently released two epoxy models, which are pretty much what I've mentioned above (epoxy boards wrapped in a soft top)! How does the happy hour stack up? Looking forward to your response! Shakas from the Mediterranean!

What is the surf board type progression? Foam board (beginner) > fun board (beginner/ intemed) > ?? > short board (Adv) ? I've just started surfing last couple of months, I found a foam really easy riding standing but couldn't turn much because of its size. I don't want to spend a lot of money buying different boards, but I'm pretty keen to find a board i can duck dive with but also has some stability. What you reckon?

Nice explanation, appreciate the info! I learned to surf in Aust on a 7'0" foam mini malibu and got quite capable; then decided to buy a board I could travel with and "grow" into. The board was a 5'10" gun and the differences were unreal, I couldn't catch a wave, I'd slide off the side when paddling hard, I would drink water since the board was submerged and I was breathing so heavy haha. It would be great to see a video explaining intermediate boards for simple beach breaks. Cheers.

Would you recommend more liters when the waves aren't as powerful? We live in the North of North Holland, The Netherlands, and the lower waves for beginners aren't that powerful. I want to start practicing turning and surfing along the rail but the waves on clean days are usually pretty small. However I feel that too many liters slow me down too much and the board isn't being sucked into the wall of the wave as easy.

I just started surfing and bought my first board, a 9ft Hot Curl foamie. I am an aspiring longboarder so thought it would make sense to start with a longboard too. I know you’ve just been getting more into long boarding but do you have any thoughts on progression for a longboarder?

Tldr: yes you do want a hardtop longboard due to the rails and other capabilities of the board. This is as any personal advice heavily dependant on what your current level and ambitions. If your are really looking into traditional logging you can get far on your 9,0. As apart from the standard popup, green waves and angled take offs you have a lot more to learn that comes down to technique rather than manouvers based on mobility. I.e. Crosstepping, faded take off, stalling and positioning on the wave. However, yes there is a point a hardtop becomes better. That has to do with the contours and compared to a foamie a lot with the rails of the board. For instance a cutback or carving turn on a foamie is hard, because the board does not want to due to its chunky thick rails. Not impossible but limiting for sure if carving turns becomes the next thing to learn. And yes, you do want to start learning these eventually. Edit: faded take offs might also give you some trouble due to thick rails.

Hey, i have got a question re buying my first foamy, iv taken several lessons and can stand up regularly, i calculated my volume based on your surfboard buying guide and the volume i calculated for myself is approximately 76L (95 x 0.8) - i am 181cm tall and 95kg, iv been thinking about getting the catch surf log , the 7ft log has a volume of 72L and the 8ft has a volume of 86L - im not sure which to get.

Hi, can I ask you what level are you and how do you find that board? Is it suitable for a 62kg beginner? Thanks
@johnathonlester9531
@johnathonlester9531 2 жыл бұрын
@@heaveninyoureyesx I would state a confident beginner - I'm 68 kg. The larger foam boards were limiting my growth so I went with this one so I could still have some stacks without worrying about the board knocking me out. Its not suitable to duck dive so its does limit the swell I go out in.

Hey man, can a beginner surfer switch immediately to a retro fish after 4 sessions on a long board? Or even without experience on a long board, can you actually learn to surf on a retro fish? Thanks man!

That O&E board only goes up to a 7"6, what would you recommend for someone at 90kg/6"2? I'm weighing up between a 9"-ish longboard, or a shorter 8"-ish foamy.

I just started surfing this summer and really wanna get my first board, im just wondering if your weight has a part to play when choosing the right board, alot people suggest to me a 8 foot board as I am 80kg, I don't mind the big board but I really wanna advance my mobility

@1:30 I didn't even need to watch anything beyond that. Get a quality soft top/foamy. They're 1/3 the price of a glass board, you don't need to worry about dings, and they surf great. Check out what some of the cats at Catch Surf are doing on soft tops.

Kale - Great stuff! I just finished your "Ultimate Surfboard Buying Guide course. It totally changed how I'm looking at my potential progression as a beginner surfer. Quick question: In the Buying Guide, you use a formula to calculate the correct volume of a board. Is that same formula applicable to foam boards? Thanks and keep shredding!
@KalesBroccoli
@KalesBroccoli Жыл бұрын
Yep! Though remember foamies will naturally have a little more buoyancy

@@KalesBroccoli Thanks! Just to clarify, if the formula tells me I should have a board with a volume of 59 liters, even on a foamie, I should shoot for that? (I love the board you show in the video, but that appears to be too "small" for me at this point if the equation holds true.)
