Kallax Leg Hack showing you a super easy DIY method to put legs on your Kallax unit. NO DRILL REQUIRED!! Kallax is super easy to hack and is a plain jane storage solution from IKEA. But don't let its bland veneer deceive you. It's very easy to dress up a humble Kallax unit to show your personality while having something that is great for organization. Using only a screwdriver, you can add legs of your choice to any Kallax. Let me show you how!

Thank you for the video. I’m going to attempt since this video was so helpful. I was hoping to use the mallard as a cubbie bench for mudroom and add a cushion on top. Could you tell me if it would be solid enough if my kids or I sat on to put shoes on or sit n read. Could not find an true answer from people who reviewed it. Thank you

Thanks so much for sharing this, including your thoughts on being afraid of the project. I've been wanting to do this for a while now, I've purchased all supplies, including a new drill (lol) -but was so afraid to do it and basically screw it up, esp because like you said, the extras actually cost more than the kallax unit itself. Oh my gosh, Tiffany!!! I'm so happy this gives you the courage to jump into the project. It's much easier than I thought it would be. Some people think the brackets should be attached differently, but I'm not constantly moving the the furniture, so it's been fine. It's all been in place for a year now, and both units have been amazing for organization. And I still think they look fantastic! Good luck!! And I'm so happy for you!!! I'm sure you will love the finished result. They honestly do look amazing.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it Elizabeth!! It's honestly very easy to do. I was so afraid of this project for the longest time, but now that I've done it, I can say don't be afraid. As long as you get the plate and legs that go together, you can put anything you like, but I honestly love the short legs. It's like a low boy and I get so much use out of both of mine. They have held up great and I use both of them every day.

I know! Isn't that crazy. It looks kind of cheesy as a cube on the ground, but adding legs makes it custom. And there are so many kinds of legs out there that could be used.

For vinyl enthusiasts, the Kallax series fit records with no problem. A 2x2 unit with a set of slanted metal legs helps make a retro style record stand.

That's a great suggestion! I saw someone who did one as console and included the turn table. It looked awesome. And YES!!! OMG their are so many cool options for legs. I have a friend who did the hairpin legs and it looked so good.

Hi Patty! It really turned out well. I love your down-to-earth approach and telling us that you were really afraid to get started. I know I am always afraid to start those projects! I am not too good with tools. So thanks for the heads up that it was an easy one to do. You definitely improved the look with your hardware and legs. It would be kind of weird for it to be sitting directly on the floor. And making a big dent in your carpet while it is at it. Legs were a good choice. I saw a Tula pink tour of her studio and she added legs to a miss-cut bargain butcher block counter top from IKEA she “slapped” legs on. Now I know how that can be done. Thanks! If I did it, I might add some varnish and make the legs a little shiny. Thanks for the tutorial. Glad you are back!

Hey Padma! Thanks for dropping by! It's kind of mind blowing what a difference such a little thing made. It's a totally different item now. And the one in the sewing room is so different from the one in the spare room. Those butcher block tops are gorgeous. So that is smart to put one on legs. You probably need a drill for that project. LOL But these little things are easy to do with out tools. It was honestly so easy to do. I'm going to get a blog post with more pictures and things up before the end of the month, too. So that should answer any remaining questions. Thank you so much for watching. It has felt really good to be working again.

@@PattymacMakes I agree, Patty. I think the legs give a lightness to the furniture so it doesn't look heavy. Makes all the difference. And I think the bare wood on the legs keeps the look simple, and NOT matchy-matchy and home made. I love it! Thanks, Patty, for taking the time to video this. @@rochestermanagementservice6082 Yeah, getting it off the floor makes a pretty big improvement. And I like the look of pine and white furniture. My house is older and on the small side, so I find the Ikea furniture doesn't over power the space which is nice. I do hope people give it a go! It was much easier to do than I expected.

I really like both of your custom units, they are a wonderful storage solution as well as a place to display things. I have to agree with you, I rarely try to use a drill, I’m just terrible with power tools like drills. I’ve been known to punch huge holes in the wall with a drill before:-(. I love that you used your seam gauge, it’s was the perfect tool for that job. I’ve never been to an IKEA, but have always wanted to. Maybe sometime soon I’ll get there. Great job. Would there be better support to connect the legs also to the side frames of the kallax?

Thanks! I don't really know if it's better. I've got mine weighted down with really heavy storage in the back room and so far so good. I think having even distribution is what works best. Having support in the center is crucial for a longer unit like this one. You could certainly experiment and see what works best for you. I also prefer the look of it slightly inset from the edge as well.

Hi! Ty for video! I’m new to ikea furniture. If I buy the unit, I have to purchase drawers separately? Would this be ok for a dresser for my clothes? Ty❤️

Yes, IKEA is all about buying the individual parts so you can make it any way you like it. I think you could put clothes in it. Though I would say lighter weight stuff like underwear and socks and t shirts. It's not going to handle bulky sweaters or sweatshirts. But accessories and jewelry and stuff like that would work. If you did the unit that is a door, the whole cube is open and you could store larger items in that. You should visit a store and see it in person to see if it works for you you need. They have A LOT to choose from. I've been happy with all of my purchases and I've made quite a few.

The plate that you attach to the furniture and the leg itself. You need one of each for every leg you want to install. I used 6 of each on my Kallax. Can you put feet or rollers on any ikea furniture?

I don't see why not. You want to make sure it's sturdy and not doing to fall over. Some items would need to be secured to a wall for safety. But this low credenza is perfect. Search and line you are looking at and add the term adding feet or adding legs and see what comes up!

That's because I got them in home depot and I linked to the next closest thing I could find on amazon. Everyone wants amazon links. I don't think the hardware is available anymore, so you would have to find something else you liked. What I linked to is a close approximation.

I tried this. Did you feel that the legs were secure enough, because the part where they are screwed in is very thin fibreboard and corrugated paper.

It's been fine for me. I would not move it constantly, but using it in a stationary piece it's been great for me The screws were plenty tight on the plate so the legs are sturdy. This is not an expensive piece of furniture, so you obviously cannot compare it to something solid wood. But for an inexpensive organizer I think it's pretty fantastic.

@@PattymacMakes I’ve discovered that the edges are more solid so triangular brackets like you used might find the solid parts. That’s what I’ve done today; I bought eket legs and screwed them in tight to each corner 👍🏻 thanks for your reply.

I think that as long as the piece isn't getting moved here and there constantly, it would be fine screwing into the "body" of the furniture, but I can see the edges would definitely have a little more "bite." For my purposes, the furniture has been plenty solid. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!

Hi Bene! Thank you for the compliment on the feet. I found them in Home Depot, which I think you have in Italy. You could check with a shop what recovers furniture as well if you live in a smaller town. Ikea has feet, but they were not this nice.

The linked legs are not the same. The screws are much longer and require you to drill a large hole into the shelving unit before you can attach them.

As I stated in the video, I purchased from Home Depot, but everyone wants amazon links. I did clearly show you the products so if you want the exact thing, it's pretty easy to find. The screws with the mounting plate are almost exactly the same thing. I gave you feet with a screw already attached similar what I used. I have viewers from all over the world and not everyone has access to a Home Depot, but pretty much everyone can order from Amazon. Also what I used is significantly more expensive than what's on amazon and people balk at spending any money. www.homedepot.com/p/Waddell-Round-Taper-Bun-Foot-4-in-H-x-2-625-in-Dia-Sanded-Unfinished-Hardwood-DIY-Leg-for-Sofas-Stools-Armchairs-2748/202094125 You should be able to do a quick search and find all of these items on your own without the need for links, but if I don't put links people complain. If I can't find the exact item and give you a suggested item, people complain. (as your comment demonstrates) If it costs too much money, people complain. I also linked you to my blog post where all the items are clearly shown and easy to find on your own. I appreciate where you're coming from, but it is impossible to please everyone. I will add links to the Home Depot products which I had before and people complained so I switched to amazon links.

Carolyn, it would work with any cubby style units, so it's not specific to IKEA.

The only think that worries me is that by putting it 3cm in you're away from the edge so much. The KALLAX is mostly hollow in the middle, so where it screws in will make a huge difference for strength. It looks like you don't have much weight on it, though, so it's probably fine.

Even though it's light weight, it's been fine. I've displayed several large houseplants on it and used it for garden starts and now an ice machine. All the drawers are full of sewing supplies. It's been fine. I would not put super heavy stuff on it like concrete decorations, for example. For every day normal use, it's fine. The way I installed the hardware, the weight is evenly distributed. I wouldn't go over and try to sit on the edge of it, but that should seem logical. For normal storage and use, it's been perfectly fine and held up well. I use both of them in my daily life and have had zero issues after years of use. I would not put this on those tall hair pin legs because that would be unsteady, but the short squatty feet work great! I hope that helps.

@@pfeilspitze I guess it depends on WHAT you want the furniture to do for you. I store sewing supplies and notions in the one pictured. The one in my bedroom holds books and CDs and my exercise videos and weights. It has a tv on top and some odds and ends. The furniture gets moved once or twice a year for me to clean behind it but other than that it stays put. I've had no trouble at all. I guess if you moved it constantly or put really heavy stuff on it, it might be an issue. But I don't know. There is a center support with two centrally located feet so that takes stress off the lateral feet and hardware. I would definitely spend the extra for the two center feet for stability. If you want to store such heavy items that the screws will be pulled out, Kallax is probably not the best choice for you. You might want to try thrifting vintage wooden furniture in that case. I hope it helps!!
