Hey there, friendlies! I bought my kalthoff carving axe just before the plague closed the world down, so Ive been waiting to show it to you guys for a long time.
Here are my first thoughts after I used it for a couple of hours. I'll do a deeper review after a season of use -- when it's not knocking on 30 degrees out.

About $250 Canadian, I think? Price was in Crowns, so it depends on the exchange when you make the purchase.

@@RaindanceBushcraft When Ms. Kalthoff was running Weterlings I spoke with her about an axe they co-designed with Les Stroud. Based upon that conversation I purchased Version2 of that axe. Still carry it in my Jeep. When Julia began her own company I immediately purchased the carving axe. It was such a good axe someone stole it. I recently ordered a replacement.

What axe do you reccomend for for chopping off material to make something like bowl blanks ? I need something that can chop off material quickly ( I'm getting into hand carving bowls )

For doing my initial shaping for blanks, I use the Scandinavian carving axe by Gransfors Bruks, but these days it's honestly way too expensive. I'd likely use something like the Council Tool Camp Carver, but I think if you're just carving into general blanks, you can use just about anything that you're comfortable with. Wooden haft though. I've had lousy experience with fibreglass handles. Too much shock directed into my hands. BUT. I'd keep it to something with a handle in the range of 16 inches or maybe a bit under. a longer haft could get caught up in your clothes or something as you try to carve.

I bought a Robin Wood carving axe to try a proper carving axe but without spending a lot. I like it a lot, but now I want to try the better ones… I guess you do feel the difference, right?

You definitely do. I've heard that those Robin Woods are a really good starter axe though. This Kalthoff was pretty expensive, so look into your options before settling on something. I guess I should have done an episode on carving axes. I may have to do that in 2023.

Why bother with a Chinese Robin axe?get a vintage hatchet and sharpen it.....that'd better quality too....and yes it is a Chinese import....
