I definitely wouldn't give it a 6 but I'd call it a 7 or maybe 8, there are a couple tracks that just don't gel for me (especially Asha the First) and it could stand to be trimmed some because it doesn't vary enough musically to justify the long 1h26m runtime in my opinion. It can be pretty fatiguing to listen to all the way through in one shot.

me personally bro i just like the way this album made me feel its not like the best jazz album technically or objectively but it was a fun listen. i wont say fantano is wrong because all music is subjective, but i do disagree with his thoughts here

@@bmant123I can give you a few from this year alone I think are better, a decade would be too easy Maruja - Connla's Well: love the blend of jazz and punk Julian Lage - Speak To Me: explores a variety of different without ever leaving the jazz umbrella Amaro Freitas - Y'Y: some of the best piano you'll hear, let alone in jazz Jacob Anderskov - I Sang: a little more classic live album

Yeah, I dunno if I agree with this review. I can see where a lot of the points are coming from, but to my ears, the "inconsistencies" are what made the album. Each track felt like it had different movements and arcs that kept me engaged through the entire experience. I agree with a decent amount of Fantano reviews but this one was a miss for me.

I completely disagree with Anthony about Computer Love, the song feels almost like it's eulogizing Roger as DJ Battlecat was a friend of his and this cover has a very somber yet powerful tone to it. I feel like with that thought process in mind the song feels a lot more coherent for the style of the album by treating the vocals as a texture, not something contributing to The narrative of the song.

Idk man, I think the switch up of styles amongst these tracks is great for keeping things fresh. Kamasi really ran his sound into the ground with his last LP and incorporating the different features and sounds into this album proved some fantastic versatility. I didn't want another Epic, and I'm glad he took a risk here

ya, i like it more than you, but i don't really see what all the fuss is about. I'm not the biggest smooth jazz/ cool jazz guy tho and there's def some of that on here. It just has this self-awareness and insistence that i've found on the recent jazz stuff i've checked out. I was very disappointed by this album. I love Shibuboshi and Prologue gave me a lot of that plus a touch of headhunters.

i've found the best way for me to watch theneedledrop is to wait for a review, listen to the album and then watch because it's like we listened to different albums. dont think it deserves a 10 or even a a 9, but 6 is too low

Idk man… I’m sure there’s some bad Jazz records out there… not everything about the album is perfect…a “6” doesn’t mean terrible, but this is a pretty exceptional album Kamasi’s made. Obviously The Epic is his magnum opus..this is still great tho.

I’d be curious from people who are saying this is a 9 (I haven’t decided on a score, but I don’t think it’s a 9), if they listen to a lot of jazz, or just dig KW (and/or other jazzy crossovers, like Thundercat), and/or they just genuinely think that, in a vacuum (to the extent that’s a thing) this is genuinely a 9… iow, so good it’s a nearly perfect album. I’ve loved KW since The Epic, but I also listen to a lot of jazz, and I think that affects one’s perspective. This is not to say my opinion (or Anthny, or any jazz fan) is more valid than someone who doesn’t listen to more than KW, and little else jazz, but merely to say I have a suspicion that at least some of the disagreement is coming from that difference.. Maybe. Idk. Opinions.

Heaven & Earth really grew on me over time, to the point that it rivals The Epic at points. I didn't agree with Fantano's 6/10 then, and it looks worse now. That being said, I do agree with his opinion on Fearless Movement. It has some highs, but the genres it attempts to span means that there are some awkward moments on it, and I just don't think it comes together cohesively as an album. It's kind of ironic considering this is his tightest album to date, but because of the variety and unevenness this is by far my least favorite project Kamasi has put out. I still really love Prologue, though.
