It's really weird that Seinfeld is now one of those people complaining that "you can't say anything edgy anymore" when he was never edgy in the first place... back when he was at the height of his popularity, the comedians who WERE edgy would even ridicule him because his style of comedy was so simple and inoffensive
@TSBJunkie
@TSBJunkie 19 күн бұрын
Right. I can't think of a single Seinfeld episode that is remotely edgy, especially by today's standards. What I love about Seinfeld is the same thing I love about It's Always Sunny: awful people doing sociopathic things without an ounce of sentimentality. It's the way comedy should be done. Again, the influence of Larry David is evident, because when you compare Curb to Jerry's awful projects like Bee Movie, The Marriage Ref, and this garbage, the difference is night and day.

@@TheRichardson711 Or it could also be a completely fake issue that affects nobody, yet people use it as an excuse to blame others because they’re stuck in the past and refuse to update their material. Lots of vaudeville comedians used to complain that their style of comedy was outdated too. Times change, people should too. All day long I watch videos of people being funny on KZfaq, like comedians, streamers, reaction content, and scripted videos. And you can find lots of funny comments too. Nobody gets canceled. Then on the other hand we have whiners who spend all their time attacking others for denying them the ability to be funny. Something isn’t adding up.

Bee Movie is also so absurd and strange that it manages to be funny in spite of itself, just not for the reasons it was trying to be funny. it's funny as a spectacle, an insight into jerry seinfeld's bizarre fucking brain and complete disregard for the entire genre of children's animation. like he only understands the incredibly surface level things like "bright colors" and "talking animals (or bugs in this case)" and "no cussing," but other than that it's just this bizarre, cynical, aimless satire of... something? and it exists in this odd space that feels like it's made for nobody, but packaged in a way that makes it kind of fascinating. like. the human lady fucks a bee. i get the feeling this has none of that.

He was sure right about the need for things like fiber in a balanced diet, but he also believed that masturbation (actually just nutting period) was bad for you, and also that if your food tasted good it would make you horny. His brother William Kellog founded the Kellog corporation and invented corn flakes that taste good, by improving texture and coating them in some sugar.

Nah, it's not a problem that Chapelle gets all the death threats he does. It's not a problem that Count Dankula was sent to prison for making a joke. It's not a problem that Canada's got a bill that will classify memes as hate speech. It's their own fault for not being funny, right?
@This-Was-Sparta
@This-Was-Sparta 20 күн бұрын
@@AlexReynard Count Dankula only had to pay a fine and avoided prison and that Canada bill was very specific about what counts as hate speech and what doesn't. Obviously death threats are not okay, but that's not a problem limited to Dave Chapelle. People in general are way too quick to whip those out when they're an anonymous name on the internet. Beyond that, what do these hyper specific anecdotes prove? Especially if two of them are so easily disproven by a single google search. Like, come on. @@AlexReynard that seems like such a false equivalence. obviously death threats are wrong but chappelle is also unfunny and bigoted and spends all his time whining about how he was 'cancelled' even though he's still doing specials because he knows that will get him attention. just because he gets harassment doesn’t mean he’s correct. i know plenty of people who like south park because they think it’s actually funny and saying something interesting, unlike him, so it’s not just a “wahh not pc” thing. this is also true on the other side for big brand ‘woke’ media- just because it seems to share leftist’s ideas on the surface and is easy bait for conservative channels doesn’t automatically mean it’s actually a good piece of media, it just doesn’t deserve to cause actors to deactivate their social media over the hate. also, in general, people on the right harass leftists all the time and conservative backed media companies that complain about censorship tend to be eager to send copyright strikes to less favorable reviews. two things can be true at once.
@SLDimarco
@SLDimarco 15 күн бұрын
No one here said death threats were okay. Count Dankula didn't go to prison though, despite the fact it probably wasn't a joke given he ran with UKIP later. And no that's a pretty bad mischaracterization online harm bill, if that's what you are getting at. 'The government wants to target the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, including deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence and content that "sexually victimizes a child or revictimizes a survivor." The bill would also cover anything online that is used to bully a child or urge them to commit self-harm.' If you take issue with that, then it's a self report.

You have references for 60-year olds that younger viewers wouldn't understand, as well as suggestive moments that could turn off anyone wanting something to show their kids. At the same time, you have jokes for 5-year olds that older viewers would groan at, as well as a glaring lack of commentary in a film wanting to be satirical & touting how "Kellogg's didn't give us permission for this" that could turn away anyone expecting something more biting. I get the vibe that Kellogg's isn't the target of the humor so much as it's more just part of the setting. My guess as to why this film was made is that it's some sort of Uwe Boll style tax write-off.

Jerry Seinfeld just talks about being funny and how’s he a comedian and he had everyone on his show do the same “oh Jerry, he’s a funny fuck” When in reality he just isn’t funny. That shows success is owed entirely to Larry David and his cast mates. I saw Seinfeld’s standup with my brother 10 years ago and we both agreed his opener we’d never heard of was 10x funnier

Jerry Seinfeld doesn't know how to write past the premise. Its like he thought "wouldn't it be funny if a honey bee discovered that humans steal their honey and then it sued the human race? Yeah thats funny." And then he stopped there and didn't think to question how to make a good story out of that.

His material works best as a stand-up performance, by telling a simple observation in a funny way that has its own built-in point. But in other media this falls flat without a vision that can illustrate a joke without just telling it directly to us.
