There's a concept known as a "Third Place." It's somewhere people can spend their time that's not their house or their work. And the general consensus is that they're dwindling. People no longer go to church, nor do they all hang out at "Central Perk" like all of the Friends used to. And it's genuinely a terrible thing! Third places are where communities are strengthened, friends are made, and identities are formed. But I think I've found mine.

For as much flak as the reddit community gets, which, sure, that's just reddit sometimes, I think its so easily often missed that there is goodness in everything. I've lurked there, participated in innumerable random episode discussions, popped my head into fun random discussion posts, read the most toxic takes, read the most informative posts, watched arguments unfold into personal attacks, yet watched passion bloom from the fans, impassioned discussions, great discussions, understanding people who just want to learn from each other and have a place to be. It's not perfect, and I love the anitube community around the block, but, idk, Reddit always has a special place in my heart even if its just seeing a seasonal SoL have like 20 posters, all the same familiar names week after week, and I can revel with them knowing that we're all here, for this brief moment.

Hearing such a positive story come from Awards is really nice to hear as I tend to get absorbed too much in my own personal negative experiences with them. This was a very heartwarming story that was told really well, ALMOST got me considering joining up again haha Now I want to go rewatch Urarara...

The thing that always stood out was the 2018 awards, specifically the blowup when the AOTY jury award went to an unlicensed kids' magical girl show. Hugtto Precure, the masses didn't deserve you. Joining the crowd of demoralized lapsed anitubers in the comments... (how many of us are there?) We remember you and each other, and relate to your stories and how you felt. Thank you for sharing!

Hugtto Precure one of the best Precure generations but it is pretty ok in the grand scheme of things. Having watched the all of the first 5 seasons of Precure, it is hard to get attached to the new characters because you know they will be replaced in 50 episodes

Hey I should join this revivalism. I'm totally on the level of you and Replay!! This actually reminded me that, a few years ago, I made a video for the r/anime contest you ran, and I remember having fun really grinding it out just to make the deadline, just to say I did it. And then, somehow, it got second place. It's one of the few things I'm honestly proud of myself over. You just sort of have that effect on me, like I want to work harder so I can have something to show for my friend. It's the main reason why I'm always so enthusiastic about the awards, even if I barely seem to watch anime (or have the discipline to keep up with what's needed . . . ) This has started to ignite that passion again, and that hasn't happened in a while. Thanks, Wilson. You make my world better.

HEY LOOK THAT'S ME! I remember your amazing insightful comment but I had no idea that lead to your first video! (I've seen it ofc just didn't know it was your first video) Your passion is honestly so inspiring and made me tear up watching this! Thank you for making so many of us feel at home as well both via the awards and just on /r/anime or actually anywhere you are! Very thankful to have you in my life and very much love and appreciate you! ♥

I don't know much about you aside from seeing this video posted on a random discord server. I think it's great that you were willing to share how an online community helped you grow as a person. The internet is like a comfortable cafe I can visit and to see someone else have a similar experience gives me hope in the world. Thanks for sharing!

This might just be my favorite piece of content about the awards I have ever had the pleasure of watching. When I started planning out this entire project back in late 2014 and I got the spark needed to get things off the ground in late 2016, I could never have imagined what it would become by today. Sure, it's not all sunshine and rainbows and I don't have the time or energy to spend with everyone as much as I used to once the awards are over, but I think this summarizes what makes the awards so magical to me and why I'm so overjoyed at what it has become and why it's so much bigger than could ever properly be explained. There's a bit of pride that comes with it in seeing my brain child having become what it is today, I'd be a liar to pretend otherwise. But it is no longer my project, it is something that has been improved upon by so many wonderful people with incredible ideas to create something so much greater than I ever could. It unites us and brings us friendships and a place of belonging unlike anything I could imagine or ever hope to create by myself. It is a living breathing thing that people willingly contribute large portions of their lives to and creates a very unique community unlike anywhere else. Thank you for sharing and especially, thank you for all the contributions you've made to the awards and this wonderful exciting experience we all share. I'm really happy that people like you have been attracted to the awards and keep loving it the same way I do.

I’m glad you’re back!!!! This video made me realize that your scenario about your anxiety holding you back is exactly what is happening to me in my life. I have had many experiences about wanting to do something but having to sit back and watch as I enviably leave. It’s not a good feeling, and I want to be able to push through it like you did. Thank you for sharing your experience.

having the Crunchyroll Awards come out at the same time really validated how much better these awards are, as a real product of passion and care. Not just from the jury, but from the public vote which usually comes from a number of people that watch more than just the battle shounen. and people might complain about the jury, but there was someone in the comments of the livestream post that crapped on the jury for being too biased towards certain 'niche' genres, and then people noticed in their MAL that they had no or only 1-2 shows Completed in those genres, and they floundered and said 'well I don't like the tropes present in those shows'. Maybe that's not representative of all the detractors, but...no, actually it pretty much is. also Bang Dream It's MyGo!!!!! deserved the W. I would never have watched it if it weren't for its passionate advocates on r/anime, because I didn't know anything about the franchise and still haven't seen anything else from it, but it ended up being right up my alley, as a certified fan of Messy Bitches. It's actually kind of rare to see real human drama in anime, and in a spin-off of a franchise promoting a phone rhythm game? what? this is weird, it maybe shouldn't exist, and it's kind of miraculous that it does. and that it has the guts to put so much on a clearly autistic character, and to make the ostensible 'main girl' presented at the beginning an absolute narcissistic clownshow who has to learn to take the backseat and support someone with more talent and charisma. a lot of the appeal as well for me was raging about fucking Sakiko. all my homies hate Sakiko. sure sure she has her reasons. I don't care, she's a manipulative bastard who was in it for the money from the beginning, and worst of all, strung Tomori along for it and tossed her away when she didn't get what she wanted, and viciously did the same to Soyo as well. And when she finally pulled her longtime friend into a band, it was the most creatively bankrupt, emotionally removed project, and then she refused to actually hang out or have fun. Trash human. looking forward to Ave Mujica show, obviously. can't want for her to have a complete psychological breakdown.

Thank you for sharing a story that's as personal as this. I think it's important that it's hammered into our heads - on top of media that carry the same message - that people can connect to each other and find fulfilment through working together and pursuing a shared goal; that's what your experience shows. I think using Bocchi here helped communicate both that and the idea of you getting out of your comfort zone. I enjoyed the 2023 Awards livestream and I respect the work that goes into it. I also re-realise that collecting disparate thoughts together and weaving them into concrete statements really is an art in itself and that I should do more of it!

The explanation of the myelin sheath is the wrong way around (it heavily decreases resistance, thus increases the speed at which signals can travel). As the points where one myelin sheath ends and another starts are called ravnier nodes, and those now offer a little bit of resistance. So technically your analogy doesn't work, but visually it kinda does as the ravnier nodes look like they "clamp" the axon together :)
@Kamimashita
@Kamimashita 4 ай бұрын
It's been a while since Biology 101! I was taught it has high membrane resistance as said in this article (teachmephysiology.com/nervous-system/synapses/myelin/#:~:text=Myelin%20has%20a%20high%20membrane,high%20resistance%20membrane%20does%20not.) and many others. Sorry if I stuttered!
@patrikfigo
@patrikfigo 4 ай бұрын
Damn, I'm wrong, as I misunderstood what you were trying to say. My field focuses more on the electrical side of things, so my train of thought was "but myelin lessens resistance on the axon", but not WHY it does that. The resistance of myelin is so high that ~for reasons I don't yet fully understand~ it just "skips over" said section. Thank you for making me ponder about that :)
