What Violet Evergarden Taught Me About Being a Nurse

I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there about what being a nurse really entails. In school, the first few semesters are about cramming as much technical info into your head as possible. But, I took a chance on an elective called "Power of Nursing" my senior year, and it was truly a transcendental experience. It focused on the so-called "soft-skills" of nursing. Not how to place an I.V., or do CPR. It was about what it means to be a carer. And rather than explain what it means, I'd rather let Violet show you instead.

When I recently rewatched the movie, I came to the realization when Violet responded to Isabella saying, “I’m just doing what I’ve learned” was a result of the love she received from Gilbert. Without him she would have never learned how to love people, ultimately displaying her love to those around her through the care and work in her letters; along with the way she treated them. As we see in the initial seasonal series, she doesn’t want to hurt people anymore. She sees how her work as an Auto Memory Doll is helping bring people closer together, rather than take life and severing relationships. All while she gains an understanding to who she is as an individual on her journey to know what “I love you” means. This idea of Gilbert’s actions spurring the growth of Violet and guiding her path to loving others can be seen in her gratitude towards Gilbert, at the end of the second film. She thanks him for giving her life, where she explains in her final letter to Gil, “The reason I’m alive today and learned how to love others is all thanks to you.” In a poem I wrote while reflecting on my own life and battling Crohn’s Disease; I came to appreciate the story of Violet Evergarden even more. (The part with the terminally ill child in the second movie hit close to home for me, since I was on a path towards death before I received proper care. I wouldn’t be here today without the excellent team of doctors and nurses who oversaw and continue to oversee my care!) Life is like a tree… “Life is like a tree. The trunk is the present, sturdy, and known, ready to seek new heights, while learning on the way. The branches are the future, reaching out in many directions, full of potential and budding with growth. The roots are the past, just as exponential as the last, no longer in sight but recalled in remembrance of what is to come: new life.”

My father passed away many years ago after an extended stay in the hospital and my mother recently passed from Covid after being in the hospital for over a month. So I've had way too much experience with nurses for my liking, but I have nothing but gratitude and respect for nurses and the work that they do. Good luck with graduation. And yay Violet, it's the best.

I got hospitalized 4 months ago (non-covid reasons) and of course there are nurses, but there's this specific nurse who's very warm to talk to. In these troubling times, even considering to go to the hospital is scary. But she made me feel at ease, and even talked about some of her struggles like her siblings who are also nurses who are forced to go head to head with the virus and getting tired because fuck this pandemic lol. And when I asked her why she did nursing, her answer was simple yet impactful. It's because she loves nursing other people in general. Maybe I've become too cynical nowadays lol. But to hear someone loving what they do in this line of work is surprising. So yeah, I'll remember that nurse cuz she made my days in the hospital way easier.

As someone who works as a DSP currently, helping disabled patients is the main reason I still work. It’s certainly not for the pay or type of work lol, but that sense of how you can make a positive impact on someone is fulfilling as heck. And although I’m still on track for the typical med school route, best of luck of completing your nursing program and passing that NCLEX. While I study for the MCAT 😭.

My aunt is a doctor for pallative medicin. I just know the German word but its probably correct ;) It is about giving fatally ill people a comfortable time till their death. She described a lot of what you said in the video too. I never understood how she could do it. I would either go on autopilot and just ignore it or end up with too much to handle. Something that resonated with me from the video is that you first have to help yourself before you can be empathetic with others. I often think "hey thats not that big of a deal" when others tell me something. I tell myself the same thing when I have stuff thats toubling me. But it's not that easy, isn't it. Even if it seems minor you still have to deal with it and tackle it proper. At least thats what I will try to do. Even if I think that it is not a big deal I will give it attention and try to solve it. Thanks for the video. And thank you especially for being a nurse. I have a lot for respect for everyone working in this job.

wish we had nurses like that in poland. though i've only really ever been to mental hospitals. though i did once meet.. amazing nurses. i felt cared for. more so than i ever was, really, ever by my family. and it was in the most unlikely of places too, i wont go too deep into it though. i remember getting extra yoghurt. and that was the best part, because they knew how much i loved yoghurt. anyway, i watched 2 videos from this channel by now and i think i'll drop a sub. very cool.

Watching this video reminded me of the nurses that cook care of me on 2017 when I was diagnosed with sclerosis, I was in the kids area cause that's the most "clean" virus free section of a hospital, had to take a lot of tests and when there was a particular one that if done wrong of if I move could end up paralytic, the head of nurses was so kind and professional that I felt safe at every moment, also the amount of nurses that I've seen because fo my little brother issues with asthma changed completely the views of nurses as a whole, specially those who works with children.

This was an amazing video as usual! I’m currently working to be a MA and gain the experience I need for nursing school. I love the subject and learning so it seemed like the best choice for me. But I’m not ignorant I know this field is for people who have a hospitable heart and even though I hate admitting that I have one. Even as a teenager my top priority was to make sure my friends where safe, I would often be the voice of reason and tell them things they didn’t want to hear, because of that they would often hate me but somehow I never took it personal. People will think what they want to it doesn’t change the fact that I’ll help anyone who needs it.(I suck at showing emotions though so I’m grateful I have to wear a mask for this job) One thing I love about nursing is that we are called to help everyone, regardless of what they’ve done prior or during. I feel like society likes to measure how bad a person is and whether or not they deserve life, but not nurses. Nurses are the ones that see every patient because if someone asks for your help, you will help them. I’m in for a crazy ride but I know I’ll love every second of it, I’m so excited to work in this field. Thank you so much for this video it really encourages me!💗

I would argue that nurses are so trusted, because you must really care for your patients and your profession if you do such a badly paid (and often unthankful) job, day in and day out.
@Kamimashita
@Kamimashita 3 жыл бұрын
It's funny, I think whether or not nurses are paid fairly is a little up in the air. On the one hand, they obviously get above an average wage, starting nurse pay is like 60K salary, but on the other hand, the work that nurses do day in and day out is not something I think many would be okay with, haha.

@@Kamimashita Well I'm not a nurse and I'm from the EU (we usually measure monthly salary compared to yearly), but from what I know the salary is pretty bad if you consider additional pay for nightshifts and such.

My sister is a doctor, and my mother is a nurse. Because I got accustomed to calling people in that profession "nurses" at a young age, I kept accidentally calling my sister one even after she graduated medical school. She used to get pissed off each time I did (I didn't run up a student debt that high to be a measly nurse!). It eventually became an inside joke between us.

To be honest, at first I had gotten into nursing mostly out of practical reasons (pretty well-paying, alright hours, I had experience in the medical field already). But you know, the more and more you do it, the more you appreciate just what their role is, and now I'm really excited to actually start "being nursey." I find a lot of qualities within me that benefit, I'm not squeamish, I don't take things personally, this stuff interests me-so I can't wait to contribute!

I'm constantly worried that my sister is going to burn out herself. She sees a lot of nasty things in the ER. This video touched a nerve with me. Recently, she told me that it feels like she's "rearranging chairs on the Titanic", due to how futile it seems at times. Do you have any advice on what I might say to her?

Unfortunately, I'm afraid maybe not considering how early I am in my career haha, instead I may be the one asking for advice. What I would say is that, assuredly her patients are better for her being there, and to take solace in that. Lean on your support staff when necessary, do your best within those walls, and then leave it at the door when you leave.
