The issue is surrendering isn't as easy as the movies portray. You have a very high likelihood of being shot, either by the opposing side or even your side. Plenty examples of both online.

How do you expect him to do that, after what he just told you? Conscripts are pushed into it. Their leaders don't give a crap about them. His best bet is surrender if the chance comes. Hahaha, this is standard operating procedure for the Russian military. Tactics haven't changed since WW2. Russia will send 30,000 men to die capturing a small village and see it as a success. Oh and the corruption runs deep. They don't collect the dead or wounded so the commander can claim their salaries.
