We had a brutal 6.30am start in order to reach Kandy Railway Station in time for our train to Ella. This Sri Lanka train ride is often referred to as the most beautiful train journey in the world and so I was really excited to see what it had to offer and if it really lived up to that title.
Join me as I vlog my travels from Kandy to Ella by train. It is a very beautiful journey!

Kandy to Ella? Ella went from Kandy to Ella ? Uh, confused ... Ellaception. Your narrative skills are killing it. Impresses me every time. So does the landscape - indeed one of the most beautiful railroad tracks in the world. What a view from your room - I would love to work from that little table and watch over the valley - I'd never leave.

Wonderful experience. So happy that you guys enjoyed this journey. I am a srilankan living in Australia and big rail fan and last time I took this journey was in 1995 when this scenic route was not so popular. Few important points. There are 4 trains from Colombo to Badulla operating in this scenic route. The one you took is known as Podi manike which starts its journey from Colombo at 5:55 am. The next train to start from Colombo is Denuwara manike at 6:35am which is an intercity train with fewer stops. Next train to Badulla is Udarata manike departing Colombo at 8:30 am. Last daytime train to Badulla leaves Colombo at 9:45 am. All these 4 trains consists of 1st, 2nd and 3rd class compartments. First 3 trains are newer push pull type power sets where as the last one is a locomotive driven one. Fastest and most convenient way to reach Badulla is using Denuwara manike intercity express where prices of similar class tickets are slightly higher. It doesn’t go via Kandy as Podi manike or udarata manike and stops at the 3rd platform in peradeniya junction. It’s away from the main station so you need to be aware of that. The last train no 1008 has an observation saloon car at the end of the train which is famous for its Panoramic views.

Ah, you're so kind! To buy tickets in Sri Lanka the day before your trip costs about £2 per person but if you want to order them online around a month in advance (like I did) it's more like £12 per person. You're paying a lot more to get it in advance but it's still quite inexpensive for 7 hours and nice to have peace of mind :)

Heard a lot about this train journey, looks really beautiful. Now feeling a bit of FOMO after we decided to skip Sri Lanka after South India 🙄 Great footage you got whilst leaning out the carriage, looks sick. Shame the GH5 died though! Also I liked your honesty about vlogging with people around, it took me a while to get used to also. But now I've realised really no-one cares and actually barely notices. Even if they do they are just interested in what we're creating 🙂

You can always visit another time! I also feel frustrated that I've not visited India yet, haha. Yes, 5 hours of almost continuous shooting really can send the GH5 over the edge! I did have a spare battery but I was honestly too tired at that point to change it. Weird how that can happen! The vlogging in public thing is so hard! I did manage to do it a few times. I was actually better in a very crowded place instead of in front of 1 couple as I felt it would take too much attention but hey, that's an exciting challenge to overcome. Well done in getting past that yourself. How long did that take you?

I can imagine you were exhausted! Up so early and then 5 hours of filming is very good going. I totally agree, crowds are often easier than a couple of people. Hmmm I’ve been travelling for about 8 months now and have been vlogging on and off. I’m not sure how I would feel doing it back home but in India and Korea no one bats an eye.

It is so unfortunate to see that people skip Sri Lanka after going through the chaos in India assuming Sri Lanka would be the same without knowing that they've missed one of the greenest landscapes on Earth.

looking at all the recent india vlogs i thought you would have popped your body out from the train haha- and then you did at 4:30 (money shot ella :D) - rain just looks so much more epic in 120 fps so beautiful all the wildlife you see along the way - i would imagine its a rather long train ride :D? haha 5 pancakes XD - traditonal sri lanka food! .. okay brb my dinner is ready :D epic cinematic as always Ella

Yes! Poking out of the train was a lot harder than it looks. You have to push yourself a lot further out the train than you think, haha. I know right - I'm suddenly grateful for the rain now looking back at the footage. The train ride was 7 hours... yep, exhausting!

Thanks so much! I use a Panasonic GH5 and I absolutely love it ❤️ Yeah the people, cows and dogs routinely walk down the tracks. The train-drivers are expecting this so are careful and slow on bends. They also honk a lot to let people know they're coming so they can move.

Sweet Ella! I'm upto date and so far what I've worked out is that your cinematics are awesome and your choice of music is not what I'd always expect from travel videos but you make it work really really well! You're making me excited to start my Sri Lanka video but I've got to wait to finish a project. Glad to be onboard, keep them coming and stop worrying about your hair :)

Thank you so much for your comment! Yes, I've never wanted to use the same music as everyone else. I have to use music that makes me feel the mood of the video and lots of the regular 'travel' music just doesn't give me the feeling. It's challenging to find music that I like to work with! You've got Sri Lanka content? Oh, I'm so excited for it! I've subbed your channel and can't wait to see more from you :) uhhh the endless hair saga. I wish I stopped messing with it but sadly I didn't but you live and learn and for my next trip I will NOT touch my hair, haha!

Well I'm a big fan of the music so well done for stepping away from the norm. Hell yeah, I only got back about 3 weeks ago, so it's fun re-living it all through you! I've subbed you too, it's crazy how you're coming out with such long detailed videos so quickly. Nice work!

@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! OK, so let's talk a bit of editing. First off, I'm self-taught and have been editing in my spare time for 11 years. I started with Windows Movie Maker back in the day 😉 Probably my number 1 tip for editing (and this can be done on any programme) is to edit with the music. I edit all my clips to the beat of the song. Whenever there's a harsh beat, change the clip. Also, think quick. People have short attention spans so don't let a clip drag on for too long, no matter how much you like it. More than a few seconds is too much. My last quick tip for now is not to overuse transitions. Simplicity in editing is actually key for travel videos. Other than that, I recommend looking up tutorials on how to use your programme and see if there are any short-cuts. For example, I can cut a clip in half using a keyboard shortcut and that really saves time. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any specific questions about editing which I'll be more than happy to help with :)

Dear friend, your video is great. One of the reasons is that your beauty is added to it. The background music fits the relevant picture frames perfectly and your voice is wonderful for that background. The best video I've ever seen. Made for the railroad in my country.Even though you have missed a lot of beautiful places .The video is made to the maximum from the captured parts. I see that you are very lucky to have a small rainy day.08.31.00 is the highest point on which trains travel in our country. It is 6226 feet above sea level.Not surprisingly, this is also the highest point on the world wide-angle freight train. I urge you to return to my country.If you come back to my country I will tell you that you can find accommodation for less money.On this track on my Face Book page, there are many details I found while walking.If You Like Mention your Face Book name and send it to me.Thank you for coming to my country
