@2:48 - What you are referring to is one aspect of Grime, which is called live sets. A live-set is when a DJ plays a collection of (grime) instrumentals and MCs will take turns rapping over them. It's energetic and complex as the MC needs to follow the beat. Most MCs refer to live sets as "sparring". It's a great way to sharpen their skills. What is grime? Grime is a genre created from a mixture of Jungle, Dancehall, Garage and Hip hop. It's typically 140 bpm and contains a lot of analog sounds. Back in 2001, MCs used to spit 8 bars and then repeat them, But the likes of Sharky Major, Kano and Ghetts changed that with their more complex styles. @3:34 - In the early 2000's Grime was not as accepted as it is today. It was considered to be too violent. Due to this, radio stations would not play or invite Grime musicians to their studios. Therefore the likes of Kano and many others would do pirate radio (illegal radio). The pirate radio station they used was located on the roof of an apartment building. Hence - "Man was putting in work on the roof back then". Trivia - Kano, Ghetts & D double E used to belong to the same musical group called "Nasty Crew". This is why Kano and Ghetts have such a great rapport. BTW - Love your videos!

DJ Kool Herc brought that Jamaican soundsystem culture to The Bronx in the 70s, that mixed with American Funk/Disco and gave birth to Hip Hop. That soundsystem culture came to England from Jamaica with the 1940s 'Windrush Generation' and had its own parrallel evolutionary journey, through Jungle/DnB and House & Garage music and mixed with British culture. That's why Grime MCs tend to rhyme in different pockets of the beat than Hip Hop artists, still has some of that Carribean cadence, like Dancehall toasting.

The reference to putting work on the roof back then is when déjà vu radio was a pirate radio station on the roof of a tower block in East London. It was basically like her a storeroom that was converted into a pirate radio station called déjà vu and they used to battle/spit bars back-and-forth.

Whoever explained Grime to you needs the most slaps. That would be like explaining rap is only battle rapping. Also.... ...putting in work on the roof is, back in the day, pirate radio stations were setup on high rises and the mast was put on the roof, then they would just broadcast as far as the signal would reach. So Kano is talking about back in the day when he was on pirate radio in London.

Now you understand where D Double E fits in Like Avengers assembling . They all have individual traits and. Double doesn't have crazy word play or heavy bars. But in a grime set he fits in .. whether that be for sound effects . Ad libs. .Track filler or hype man Also with his strange knack of flowing on. Then off beat using words that don't rhyme or sentences with different lengths D Double will chop & screw the bars to fit whatever 140 tempo

The reference to the roof I think is back to when they used to do clashes on the roof of a tower block (the flats). Grime isn’t freestyled it just needs to be 140 bpm (beats per min). We used to do 8 / 16 bars each if bars man wanted to jump on it lol that was the good old days

This totally grime! BUT... people mistake grime as rapping fast...Grime is rapping on a 140 bpm beat, you can rap it any style, and was developed from garage music (Kano has a song called Garage Skank) Stormzy - Still Disappointed is a great recent example of Grime, part of the Wiley beef.

UK Grime is heavily influenced by Jamaican culture and slang words. If you study Jamaican slang words 1st it would definitely help you understand Grime lyrics moving forward. Also what doesn't help you guys is how fast UK MC's spit the bars so is very hard for you guys to catch the lyrics. Great reaction tho

"I can understand Ghetts" but you cant understand Kano? say what lool? maybe its my UK ears but Kano I find easier to catch his lyrics than Ghetts (but that's because Ghetts has mad use of where he rhymes , he does not rhyme in a usual place in the lines)
