Departure from Kansas City Downtown (KMKC) airport on a flight to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This flight was in March 2015.
Kansas City Downtown is a very nice airport. Two good FBOs plus the city's GA parking ramp and self-serve fuel pump with low prices, and all that right across the river from the downtown area.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the video! That's a fun airport to fly into, especially if you arrive in the evening and they're landing on 01 or 03. While on final, the view of the city all lit up on the bluff to the east is gorgeous.

I'm currently earning my private pilot's license at this airport, so it was really nice to see such a detailed departure video out of KMKC. Thanks!

Good for you, Brandon! How far along are you with your flight training? KMKC is a really nice airport. I was just there again last Saturday with my family. The city-operated fuel pump and GA Terminal make this an affordable and convenient choice.

Visited MKC last summer and the TWA Airline history museum is an enjoyable stop for an airplane geek.

If you love OSH traffic, you'll love it when the Plaza lights up on Thanksgiving night. Kudos to John Hall at the Heritage Museum. A great effort.

@@martinpauly Hi Martin, the L-1011 CBT, according to John, take 480VAC to power the entire sim. So, in order to power the KCMO tower Christmas lights, they run a partial system on 240 VAC. KCMO has a large impact on me to this day. Especially MKC, where, as a six year old, tood on the observation deck and talked to the Connie captains when they were close enough to hear over the large radials. 10 years later, I soloed. And the rest went by at a speed faster'n Southwest taxis.

@@dickjohnson4268 Thanks for sharing that, Dick. Do you still fly these days? And do they have the L-1011 sim up and running now at the museum? Last time I was there, they had bits and pieces of it, but it was far from operational. - Martin

@@martinpauly That was back in 2013 the last time I was there. I bought the mandatory Connie hat (from John) which I still wear quite a bit. Retired from flying a while back. However... Anyway, 6-6/95 was a big day for me. We made circuits around the Liberty Memorial; The Connie, "FIFI", and us in Lil, followed by Aluminum Overcast. It doesn't get any better than that. Especially when you meet a new hero every 15 minutes. They are truly the Greatest Generation. It was my honor.

Great video. I'm from Kansas City and I drive around MKC all the time just to see what's hanging out down there. It was very cool to see the route on the departure heading south. It's always good to hear positive comments about KC! Hope you enjoyed your visit and I'll keep watching your videos.

Kansas City, is not by definition, a world class city. World Class cities meet a criteria of the following: - A variety of international financial services, notably in finance, insurance and marketing. - Headquarters of several multinational corporations -Major manufacturing centers with port and container facilities -Considerable decision-making power on a daily basis and at a global level -Centers of media and communications for global networks -Dominance of the national region with great international significance -Multi-functional infrastructure offering some of the best legal, medical, and entertainment facilities in the country Kansas City is at best, a plucky second tier city.

Quick question have to fly into KMKC in a week. Coming up from Tulsa, probably will just got VFR if weather permits. Did you ask for anything special. Staying overnight. Want to refuel at the GA area, and park there too.

Brian, KMKC is very easy for small GA. The only issue I've experienced is due to the limited number of tie-down spaces at the city's GA ramp. If those are full, you may have to use the FBO. Fortunately, it seems that competition (two FBO's on the field) is keeping them honest and the prices reasonable, though neither one can beat the city's GA ramp and self-serve fuel. Atlantic doesn't sell 100LL, but they'll take good care of you even if you buy fuel at the city pump next to them. Enjoy your trip there!

So what perks if any do you feel like you get some the large FBO's. I know all are basically different.

Brian K Rich MD Brian, Generally speaking, with smaller airplanes I can't think of any perks that would justify the use of the larger, usually more expensive FBO chains. But locations and what they offer differ so much, it's hard to make any generic recommendations. In Kansas City Downtown, the two FBOs have to compete not just with each other but also with the self-service fuel pump. So they know they have to provide excellent service to get people's business. That usually results in quick service and very friendly and helpful people. Signature gave us a free-of-charge ride in their van to the Country Club Plaza, on a day with busy traffic no less, saving us an expensive cab ride. A couple of years ago, my instrument pressure pump broke on arrival into KMKC on a Friday afternoon, and Signature went out of their way to locate and install a suitable replacement yet that same day. There are also many excellent small, individually-owned FBOs at many airports in the US. Large isn't always better. But the two FBOs on the field at KMKC have a pretty good reputation, which from my experience is well-deserved. - Martin
