Most 60’s and 70’s guitarists started out playing folk music and blues. That finger style picking is timelessly beautiful.

I lost my dad and my younger brother to cancer in the last few years, and this song reminds me of them. Can't wait to see them again.

It has been in soundtracks and has been played at funerals. In fact, in Old School, it was played in the soundtrack at Blue's funeral. "You're my boy, Blue!"

Note that this is similar to "Carry On My Wayward Son., which was a conversation with God. Kansas takes a spiritual and philosophical approach. They are trying to figure out life. And so that's what they sing about. Deep thinkers that are willing to address it in their music.

This song came out when I was about 9. Scared the hell out of me as a kid because all I heard was that we all die and just become dust when we die. As an adult I appreciate its meaning and musicianship. Very haunting to say the least.

My father told me that he wanted this song played at his funeral when I was 15 years old. He sat me down and we listened to the song together. He explained that I should live my life with the perspective the song delivers.

I saw these guys in Raleigh, NC in the 70's when they were touring this album. They had absolutely ZERO fakey/hypey stage "presence, just came on stage and wowed us all. To be able to see/hear the violin LIVE was epic. So very glad I got to see them.

My friend won some tickets back in high school and I got to see Kansas live, around 1996-7. They opened for ZZ Top, and both bands still CRUSHED it. This song sounded great, and the crowd was an ocean full of people holding lighters up. Good times. Ty for this video, it takes me back.

I was blessed to be part of the backstage crew on their 1986 USO tour and I can promise you, Steve's voice does not change without the effects (reverb/compression/eq). The musicians from the bands on the tour were backstage standing around a piano as Dave Jenkins (Pablo Cruise) played, and Steve's voice was just as perfect.

This is my favorite Kansas song. I am glad that you two generally enjoyed it.

That intro is a fingerpicking pattern called the 'Travis Pick', named after Merle Travis, with an alternating thumb pick depending on chord. You'll hear it in many folk and western-inspired songs once you recognize the pattern.

Icarus (Borne On Wings Of Steel) has always been my favorite Kansas song. Song For America is also one of my favorites that doesn't get enough dap.

The title cut "Point Of No Return" is a great one. This track was always a bit too melancholy for me. Another fabulous band to check out from this era is Styx. There’s some underrated artist like Kansas, foreigner, Toto, 38 special, even Styx.

This song is powerful because of its subtle touch. So introspective. And just gorgeous lyrics.

I remember in the early 90s when AIDS had really started to creep into every day society I got the sad news that a friend of mine was dying of AIDS. I heard this from a different friend because he didn’t want anyone to know and I remember having to see him and act like I didn’t know that he was losing his life- after I found out that news I went in to a place to mail a package and this song was playing and I burst out into tears I’m sure the people in the UPS store were wondering what the hell was wrong with me but I couldn’t put into words that I knew that my friend would be leaving us soon and he did RIP Dan- you were an amazing man!

Every musician I knew in 1977 was learning and performing this song -- singers, violinists, guitarists, all of them. We all performed it everywhere, and improvised on it, and riffed on it, and just generally loved it to death. It is impossible to understate how influential this song was.

Saw Kansas 5 or 6 times live. They always perform perfectly, they play so well it's like you're hearing their cd.

The main difference between AC/DC and Kansas is that, and I’m not shitting on Angus or the band here, but AC/DC songs all have a VERY similar tone and vibe to them. Across all of their albums I’ve ever listened to, they’ve pretty much stuck to one formula. It works for them, they’re a great band, but it leads to the fatigue you are talking about. The same can’t be said for Kansas.

Why they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is mind boggling with three multi-platinum albums, two platinum albums and four gold albums.

I think of Kansas as an American prog rock band. Syncopated rhythms, violins, and movements within songs along with orchestrations. There is also a lot of depth to their lyrics. Their music grows on you.

If you want to prog out - Magnum Opus!.....there is about 1 minute of singing, the rest is just straight banging Prog.....One of my favorite Kansas songs, trust me you wont regret it. Especially from their live Two for the Show LP! I would love to see your reaction to that one!

You have to see the trajectory from "Carry On My Wayward Son" through "Dust in the Wind" to the eventual breakup of the band. Kerry Livgren was going through a deep soul-search, eventually leading to his conversion to Christianity and the eventual breakup of the band.

Always got the “seize the moment” vibes from this track. It’s beautiful, and then it’s gone. It is pain, and then it is gone. The string section goes up and down, just making me feel these peaks and valleys. Just the feels I get.

I remember when this song when I first heard it in Feb 1978, which was around the time my grandfather passed away. (It came out in 1977.)

Years ago, my best friend at the time played this 7 times in a row on the jukebox at the pool hall we were at. He was 6'8", 450, so although everybody wanted to kill him, they also didn't want to mess with him. lol

It doesn't matter who you are, where you from, or the things you've done. We're all heading toward the same place. The common fate of humankind. It's our destiny. The destiny of all things.

Regardless, I've come to the conclusion that your success as a channel is pretty much the reason my channel is growing. You're genuine. At 14, surviving on the streets, with violence an every day part of my world, this tune showed the double-edged sword of existence, and in the grand scheme of things, how trivial it all was. I love me some AC/DC, but people probably get tired of hearing them because a lot of thier songs have the same rhythm. George had me laughing with that, "they need to play this in a strip club," so people could get their life together....lol.

This was a practice riff that Kerry Livgren used to warm up and practice his finger picking. He was always the one who came up with the riffs that would become hits.

Hey guys great reaction. Weekly Jeff Buckley reaction request. He was a singer/songwriter from the early 90’s who unfortunately passed away after recording a single perfect record. His story is tragic but his songs are transcendent. He could rock the fuck out like Hendrix but then cover a song like hallelujah and slay that too. This song is all about the MESSAGE. We are all nothingness on this planet and our time is over in the relative blink of an eye. Every one of us are points on a line and somewhere on that timeline our points will fade away. It's ironic because this song will be around as long as humankind are around to listen.
