When most people talk about WR/TEs, it’s usually oriented towards them catching passes. I think a really underrated aspect of the KU WR/TEs is their downfield blocking. DougE refers to it as being grimy. I love it and know it was a point of emphasis in previous training camps. Highly underrated.

Not bad for a channel trying to go in depth on every team. You talked about something beyond QB and RB. That's pretty rare. That said, the depth chart you'll find on Ourlads is most definitely not accurate, and it seems to be the basis for some of the analysis. Bryce Foster will not only start, he was the game changer. A monstrous former 5 star and freshman All-American who started all 12 games for A&M last year. He opens up the playbook for an offensive coordinator who likes to go under center. It fixes an issue with Kotelnicki's offense that often had to take risks in the shotgun on 3rd or 4th and short situations. With him in place, both Ford and Cabeldue remain in place as long time starters on the right side. Kobe Baynes played nearly starter level snaps last year as a sixth man that rotated in, so he brings stability to LG, and the expectation is that a healthy Logan Brown will finally get a chance to show his NFL potential at LT. Obviously, the back issue with Jalon Daniels is paramount on everyone's mind, but he now has a team built around him that should allow him to take fewer risks. A one-two punch of Neal and Hishaw at RB, Torry Locklin catches passes out of the backfield as a change of pace, 4 key seniors at WR, and Jared Casey is an excellent blocker with surprisingly great hands that they use as a sort of hybrid TE/FB. It's an offense with enough weapons that they no longer need him to work miracles. Other than that, I agree that to make it a successful season, they need Bai Jobe to live up to his potential at DE. He showed that he was nasty in the few snaps he had at Michigan State, so, much like Austin Booker, he was just a young player that needed to find a place with a starting job opening. Jereme Robinson also had some cleanup knee surgery in the offseason, so he may break out in a supersenior year when not having to play hurt. The two freshmen 4-stars could occasionally rotate in on obvious passing downs, but I expect Wudke, Dean Miller, and (if healthy in time) former 4 star Dylan Brooks should contribute most of the 2nd and 3rd string snaps. Outside of that, the defense is solid. They just need to avoid having to cover for too long on passing downs.

I completely agree with your analysis! You summarized things perfectly imho. Foster will definitely be a starter given that he stays healthy, with Baumgartner a somewhat reliable back-up, all of which means Ford plays in his preferred position. And as you mentioned there's also a good chance that Logan Brown, a former 5-star, lives up to his potential which will only make things better for JD6. Brown was out with a season ending injury last season. Cornell Wheeler is expected to take up the defensive leadership duties of Craig Young/Rich Miller, the coaching staff rates him highly and he's expected to be a key playmaker on defense. I'm super pumped for the new season. Rock Chalk!

@@JABurtin appreciate it. We try to use enough resources to get a full depth chart. Including spring reports and local beat reporters but truthfully it’s a pain in the ass to get everyone. But thanks for the information on all these guys. As always we love how passionate college football fans are like us.

@TheDevyRoyale I'd say damn near impossible. It's hard enough to make an educated guess when you follow a team closely, and surprise players always emerge.
@turinturambar347
@turinturambar347 Күн бұрын
The thing that is worrying about JD6 is that his injury is back related. No he won't have to be a miracle worker anymore, but the nature of his injury is he could tweak it at any time. Literally just picking up a sock off the floor and he could be out 3 weeks. Back injuries are so difficult to predict. Obviously we don't have the information on it, but if it's a soft tissue type of thing it could be recurring and could tweak with the most minimal contact or movement. Or he could be fine. Who knows? There's enough talent around him now that if he's healthy all year, KU could win the Big XII. If they have to go to a backup, they can still win 6-8 games.

@JABurtin With the addition of Foster and Jobe, the depth at LB becomes the biggest ? Enough so that they’re experimenting with moving safeties to LB/Hawk.

Just wanted to add: Red Martel got discouraged by the competition in the RB room and decommitted (entered transfer portal)! And Deshawn Hanika is probably out for the season with an injury

@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 3 күн бұрын
It would have been nice to keep Keys, but for now there’s quite a bit of depth at DT. There isn’t an immediate replacement for Booker, but DJ and Dak are great recruits while Bai Jobe is even better with a year of development already in his hands. His per play production was really good.
@turinturambar347
@turinturambar347 Күн бұрын
I actually think the DL will be pretty decent. There is a lot of depth and some decent talent. Booker hurts, but they did pick up two DEs in the portal and they return Robinson who played very well last year before he tore his labrum. They also picked up two 4* freshman, so I think there's a decent chance one of them will get some snaps. If Jobe can live up to potential this DL can be pretty good. If not, it is still a DL that I think will be adequate. KU has two of the best CBs in the Big XII, so they can cover guys longer if they need to. Of course nobody can cover forever, so they will need to find a way to generate a pass rush if Jobe doesn't live up to potential.

They didn't even have the transfer Center from A & M on their depth chart. He will be the starter.

If you listened to the video we discussed Bryce Foster. He just transferred in April. Will be on campus in the fall and will compete with Shane Bumgardner. Based on all the beat reporters and 247 reports he’s not on the radar yet because he’s not on campus. If he does win the job kudos to him but we did mention him.

@@TheDevyRoyale Oh he will be the starter from day 1. No offense to Bumgardner, but Foster just gives you a different element when he's on the field. All reports are that since he's been on campus, he's been very focused on learning the playbook. He's taking this very serious and is learning the offense. I think he'll pick it up quick. All reports are that he's intelligent an picks things up quickly. He can maul opposing DL, and will be big especially in short yardage situations, which KU has struggled with. Bumgardner will offer a nice backup to Foster.

Much better than Bucky, especially with his better athleticism. He’s like 15-20 pounds heavier, runs a similar 40, and has three-down upside.

Devin Neal this year, unless he suffers a major injury, is going to set the All-Time KU rushing record. He'll pass up players like Gayle Sayers, John Riggins, Curtis McClinton, June Henley, etc. Neal is really good. He has has a history of of injuries. Not major injuries, but nagging injuries that slow him down mid-season, but he's tough and plays through his injuries. But when he's 100% healthy, he's 2nd only to Ollie Gordon in the Big XII.

DNeal is best in the country ypc. KUs RB room is really good so he won’t shoulder as much of a workload as Ollie and others, but he is still fabulous.

KU has been over every year with coach Leipold. KU soundly beat Illinois and unlv last year. At WVU to start the conference will be interesting. They feel disrespected after rising from the bottom of the barrel to mid standings last year, though they rarely recognize the weak weak weak schedule they played last year. Week 4 is the beginning of the flip to playing all the top teams, and it is in WV. Ksu is by far the toughest game, and ISU could be interesting as essentially a neutral site game at arrowhead stadium in KC. All home games will be in KC, with the stadium on campus being rebuilt. Some see that as a negative, and there are downsides, but the players are looking forward to playing on grass instead of AT, and there is the possibility of 50% more fans because of the greater capacity. Teams like TCU could have a big improvement, but in general KU has the easiest schedule in the conference if not the nation.
@turinturambar347
@turinturambar347 Күн бұрын
IDK about easiest in the nation. They do have one of the easier schedules in the conference, though their home/away balance isn't great. But I'll take it after seeing KU's schedule in the top 10 pretty much every year the last 15 years or so. It's still way more difficult than WVU's schedule last year, which is why I can't really predict that WVU game....hard to tell how much WVU improved or if it was the schedule. Sucks that game is at WVU, considering our last game against them was at WVU. Arrowhead is going to be interesting. In some ways they may attract more fans since many KC area fans who don't want to go to Lawrence, might be more willing to make the trip to Arrowhead. Though they will likely be missing some students.

@turinturambar347 A month or so ago a national publication listed KU as 2nd easiest in the nation. I’ve only punched in the numbers for conference games, but did it twice. Once using Fandual odds and once using the preseason polls. Both had KU with the easiest. Based on the preseason polls, Arizona, kstate, Utah are the next 3, with OSU 8th.
@turinturambar347
@turinturambar347 Күн бұрын
@@johnlee7085 IDK. KU plays most of the top teams in the conference next year outside of the Utes. And in their noncon, they play UNLV, a bowl team last year, and they play on the road against Illinois. Illinois isn't a great team, but they aren't terrible and the game is on the road. I think it could be a tough game. There are plenty of tough games on the schedule that they can lose. The only difference is there aren't any games they stand little to no chance to win, with Oklahoma and Texas gone. But the same can be said for everybody in the Big XII. Is it easier than other schedules in the conference? Sure. But it's nothing like WVU's schedule last year where they avoided literally all of the top teams other than OU and OSU, and they got OSU at home.
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 Күн бұрын
@turinturambar347 Id suggest you look again at the schedule. KU doesn’t play Utah, OSU, Arizona, or ucf. That’s the top half, plus we miss #9 TTU. KU plays the fewest top half teams in the conference this year at 3 - WVU, ksu, ISU. Send me your address and I’ll send you the spreadsheet of all the conference games. Doesn’t include noncon because it would be next to impossible to quantify without a full blown model. As for KUs noncon specifically, Lindenwood is not a top fcs team by any stretch of the imagination. Illinois is down even more from their one year blip prior to last year. Even away should be a solid W. Unlv did make a bowl game, but KU torched them in it, plus they lost their QB and we got better. Gotta play the games, but would be a disappointment to not start 3-0.
