You are too kind! I still have a lot to learn, but I really do love teaching kids and seeing them grow. Teens are fun too, and they mostly get my jokes, even if I don't always get their references. They help me stay in touch with what's happening and what's cool at the moment 😅 Thank you for this lovely comment, Paul!

In the hard moments when you don't know how to defend yourself, you just need to decide what is better for you, the best choice is to learn a martial style, i joined muay thai and im going good, but im thinking to join karate, with such a good teacher you can trust and learn your self defense, Don't be shy, be strong and keep getting stronger

Muay Thai is a wonderful style, and brutally effective. I would never want to fight a Muay Thai specialist! But you're right - we take the styles, ideas and techniques that work for us, and we keep training those concepts until they work under pressure. It's like that ancient Greek saying: "we don't rise to the level of our expectations - we fall to the level of our training." Thank you for watching and commenting, and please forgive my late response to your comment :) Best wishes, Zoë

I'm blushing! These are such kind words, and I am always so delighted to hear from friends in other styles. I loved Chile when I visited South America briefly in 2004, as part of a trip to Machu Picchu. Felt so welcomed by the friendly people of Chile, and went on wonderful tours of the cathedrals (and crypts!) of Santiago. Wonderful to hear from you, and thank you for taking the time to watch and comment 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️ Oss!

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre, there is yet another opportunity to teach by showing them how you were able to deliver a great lesson despite feelings of awkwardness. I am an introvert by nature, so I understand this awkwardness all too well. Thanks again for doing what you do!

Truly you have the spirit of a teacher! Always good to find the teachable moment. The funny thing is that normally I consider myself an extrovert, but there's something especially daunting about putting stuff out there. There's a lot of imposter syndrome, especially because I am just a nidan, and I happen to be married to an exceptionally talented karate man who is also a qualified teacher - it feels silly to put out my videos when he has more to offer! These words of kindness and support make all the difference. Thank you 🙇🏻‍♀️

Very good and instructive video to reactivate Karate-knowledge after years of non-practice. As it is I used to train Shotokan-Karate when I was a youngster and kept up with it until my mid-twenties. Then I had a very hard accident with my right knee so that it would not work as well as before anymore. However, I started a new training in Wing Tsun and there I realized how valuable all my previous knowledge from Shotokan was. Some months later (I already have an intermediate level of Wing Tsun now) I heard our Sifu (Chinese word for "Sensei") say the following: "depending on your moving habits or your previous knowledge of other martial arts each and every one of you will build up another individual style of Wing Tsun. Those who did Karate in the past will be able to understand movements and techniques another way than people who never attended a course in self-defense before. Judokas or wrestlers will practice another form of Wing Tsun than people coming from Karate or Tae Kwon Do." Actually I understood what he meant: "Every movement (turn, hip-vibration) or technique (punch, kick, block etc.) you learn is a PLUS for your capacity to defend yourself. So I re-started to have a look at Karate again, checked the principles of each technique I recalled and...voilà! There are no limits to combine techniques, methods (e.g. Ka Kie, Chi-Sao, Kihon-Ippon Kumite...). It's a whole universe opening up in front of me! Marvelous!

Teaching kids is as hard as it is rewarding - yesterday I wanted to tear out all of my hair because it was a particularly rough day of hearing "Sensei sensei sensei sensei" in surround sound, but it is also important for me to remember that they just want to share in what I know and to share what they love with me. It is a privilege to be able to teach karate full time, and one we will always be grateful for :)

The first time I'm 46 I've haven't done this since I received my black belt at 11 years old. It's a great starter to me if you get rid of the recommendations. I live here in California, I'm doing this for myself it wasn't enjoyable when my parents were being very pushy we're pushing me away for years for some reason when my mother passed away I started to get a niche for it I don't know what it was but I do remember having counseling with my counselor and he asked me those questions and he asked me why don't I go back to it I said a good question for myself who started to dab a little bit and I noticed that it was there I don't know where it'll take me but I do know that I can incorporate it in a lot of things

Ah, I'm sorry there isn't a place for you to train nearby - I hope one day a dojo opens in your area, or you move somewhere that has a good dojo. It is my hope for you that you can train in a good dojo someday 🤗

Have you both got your a.m. coffee in hand;)? A LAPEL MIC! Awesome, and, what a difference such a small piece of tech can make! In all seriousness....the video was crystal clear. Nice! So, You are correct, I believe, that we can always benefit, no matter the age, or level of skill we have acquired, to revisit the basics of our chosen art regularly, even so far as to break them down into their most elemental parts. Its fun and humorous to see how your dojo breaks down the separate movements for the kids, as well, for them to to more easily absorb. I really like that approach. And, Zoe, Sensei, glad to see that you get opportunities to be in these videos as well, as you're just as concise (but with your own style;) in your tutorials as is Jagger, Sensei;). Btw, I just refer to your first name, so as not to confuse you as to who it is I'm referring/addressing. I hope that is not rude of me to do. LMK. Thank you for your channel's informative sharing, as always. Have a great weekend!
@GojuRyuKarateCentre
@GojuRyuKarateCentre 3 жыл бұрын
Yay, Mr Fisher is here! Coffee at the ready. We really should have invested in the lapel mic 35 videos ago 😅 it was a $20 buy that will make all the difference. So glad you noticed and liked it! Teaching kids comes easier to me than adults - adults get in their own way more often, and feel that steep learning curve more keenly. And while I may be able to explain things using metaphors etc to them, they are also much more self-conscious about their mistakes. Love sharing how we do things in our dojo, to give back something to the karate world which has traditionally given us all so much, so freely. While there are gatekeepers, it is easier now than ever to grow and improve as a wider community, and damn that's an awesome thing. This small, but kind and invested group of karate friends we have here on YT is the best thing to come out of lockdown. Of course you can use my first name, good sir! My double-barrelled surname is a mouthful, and everyone calls Ché 'Jagger' mostly because Sensei Chinen started calling him that in the 90s, and it stuck 🤣 I will definitely do a video more often than every 2 months - slowly getting over my own imposter syndrome. It takes time 😊 As always, thank you so much for the kind words and feedback - always a delight to hear from you 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

I did Shotokan Karate in the 80's and got to almost Black Belt. I am in my 60's now but feel drawn to start retraining in my own at home. I think it will help with the Fibromyalgia I was diagnosed with in 2019. Your moves seems similar to Shotokan. I do have severe arthritis in my knees from injuries (not Karate) I can do your moves so far and kicks, but low stances may be a problem. Low stances are used in Shotokan. I would be grateful for any advice. Interesting information about brain integration for people with brain neuro issues Thanks 😊

@GojuRyuKarateCentre Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, and to send such thoughtful feedback. It is never too late to start again, and I am so grateful to be part of your renewed karate journey. Shotokan and Goju Ryu share the basics, but diverge dramatically in the kata. We have 12, and they are very different from Shotokan's 30+ kata. As for low stances - I actually have a hip issue that prevents me from doing the low stances properly. So I do them as low as I safely can. Gichin Funakoshi wrote that stances are for beginners - as we evolve, low stances aren't as important as natural kamae. I would never expect a student with your age and mobility issues to have low stances - just that you can do the techniques to the best of your ability. It was also Funakoshi who wrote 'spirit first, technique second'. Karate is meant to be for everyone, which means it naturally adapts to the practitioner. Unlike other styles that demand a certain base level of able-bodiedness, karate adapts to you, and an instructor keeps that in mind during training, grading, fighting etc. I look forward to hearing from you again! Best wishes, Zoë
