When I was a kid in the late 1960s I listened to Braves games on a small transistor radio. Hank was my hero. I drew pictures of him and my dad mailed them to the Braves home office. One day I got a letter in the mail. Hank sent me a 1969 batting photo with a note on the back. It reads ‘Thanks for the pictures Ken. Best wishes, Hank Aaron”. I still have it and am reminded of this remarkable man, a humble superstar, who took the time to write to a small town kid who looked up to him. God bless you, Hank Aaron.

Tears welled up in my eyes. That is an awesome story about a great man. I am not surprised by it though. He was just such a gentleman and that just seems like it would be his character. Iconic figure...

@YankeesFan27 I too am a Yankees fan. You missed a lot kid. I was born in 1965 and witnessed some of MLB’s best to ever do it. Guys like Hank Aaron were what the league was all about. Many icons, but Mr. Aaron was just a wonderful human being along with being an awesome ball player. Look up some of these guys on KZfaq and prepare to be amazed.

@YankeesFan27 next best thing to being there. I use those memories now. I don’t like COVID sports and I find more pleasure in watching old video of greats to pass the time. 70’s to 90’s Yankees, Muhammad Ali, Big Red Machine Cincinnati Reds during 70’s, Julius Dr. J Erving during 70’s and 80’s, Pistol Pete Maravich during 70’s, Roberto Clemente during 60’s and 70’s, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, 60’s, 70’s, 90’s Dallas Cowboys, 80’s Lakers, 90’s Chicago Bulls and many more. Enough to keep you entertained.

1:19 What a shame that the ignorance of so many took away from him being able to enjoy breaking the most popular record in Sports (at the time), and it’s even more shameful that we’re still having to deal with people with that same ignorant mindest today. Rest In Peace to a Legend, Henry Aaron

If Aaron had played his entire career in the giant media market of NYC there would have been a famous folk song written about him. He had a better career than Mantle, better than DiMaggio. If you take away all of the home runs he hit, he would still have over 3,000 hits. Arguably the greatest baseball career in history.
@nrcg23173 жыл бұрын
Of all his records, Hank Aaron was most proud of his total bases...6856.
@drewhunkins71923 жыл бұрын
@@nrcg2317 Yes, that sounds right. I know he was also very proud of his career batting average over .300.
@DanielSong393 жыл бұрын
Mantle was actually more talented than Aaron but the hard living shortened his career and led to his early death. Still an absolute legend. As for DiMaggio he was another great one but lost 3 years due to war and had a shortened career. Still, I think Aaron had a better peak than DiMaggio, just slightly.
@drewhunkins71923 жыл бұрын
@@DanielSong39 "Mantle was actually more talented than Aaron." Perhaps, but I think it's debatable. I know one time Mantle (probably just being diplomatic) said Aaron was the best player in Major League Baseball. Not sure if Mantle could have ever pulled off what Aaron accomplished regarding the 3,000 hits even after deducting all the HRs.
@DanielSong393 жыл бұрын
@@drewhunkins7192 Mantle was not able to fully maximize his abilities due to his lifestyle, it's well known and he admitted as much during and after his career. Still he was a legend in his own right, although Aaron accomplished more on the diamond.
