Kareem Abdul-Jabbar DOMINATED high school basketball.
From 1961-65, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then known as Lew Alcindor) led Power Memorial Academy in New York City to a 96-6 record (with a win streak of 71 games) and three straight city titles. He finished his prep career with over 2,000 points and 2,000 rebounds.
There weren't enough compilations of Abdul-Jabbar's footage from high school, so I made this one from everything I could find.
Music featured: Cantaloupe Island by Herbie Hancock.

Lew Alcindor was in high school at the same time that I was attending high school in California. This was also the era of O.J. Simpson. I remember hearing about Simpson when he was tearing up the gridiron at San Francisco City College. Then Alcindor went to UCLA and Simpson headed to USC. Wow, those were amazing days in California. Now, everyone is trying to escape the banana republic formerly known as the "Golden State."

It's easy to think that way, totally understandable, but their were actually a lot of outstanding players in Jabbar's era. The rules were way more strict back then when it comes to ball handling, offensive fouls, etc... so the game was different. Also, these highlights were high school too.

Players are not better now. The rules are different but there are very few current centers that could have played in the 60's. The 70's were weaker due to the ABA and expansion.

Set shots, chest shots and sky hooks, (even the underarm lay up not shown here lol)... I remember running hook shot I saw my grandpa do. Imagine an old man dribbling to the baseline, I'm on him, he does a 'hoppity skip' and sinks one without me realising. So used to people quick stop for a jumper or fade I never realised they shot like that in the 40s lol. Miss my gramps...

A lot of this is from a syndicated TV show in the 1970s called "Greatest Sports Legends." They'd do an hour of interview with lots of old game clips. The interviewer for this one was Jayne Kennedy, a former beauty queen who later provided eye candy for CBS coverage of the NFL.

Notice how the old school centers were taught to block shots in the directions of their teammates. Nowadays these idiots block them into the third row and the crowd oohs and aahs like they did something awesome. All they did was give the offense the ball back.

@@Eb-dw3tq I’m a coward for telling the truth about modern guys going for loud blocks that go into the stands? All it is is a turnover. Russell, Chamberlain and Jabbar would block it and keep it in play. Don’t know why you’re getting all pissy about it. I also don’t know why you’d think I’d care about what you have to say about me. For me to be bothered by your opinion of me it would have to matter first.

LOL. Wilt was (and still is) accused of precisely that by all the Bill Russell fanboys who claim Russell was the defensive god and Wilt was a hack. When it is pointed out that game play by play reconstruction from the 1960s that Wilt actually blocked more shots than Russell, they said, "oh yeah well Wilt always blasted the ball into the upper deck while Russell skillfully blocked it ahead on the court to his teammates for fast break baskets, etc etc." In point of real fact the direction of blocked shots is mainly a result of where the offensive player is coming from. If they're inside near the basket the blocked shot usually goes up court. If thy are driving the baseline the shot usually gets blocked off into the stands. Even Russell and Wilt in their primes never averaged 10 blocks a game, they both averaged maybe 8. The number of blocked shots where the shot blocker has any choice where they're going to block it is infinitesimal - 1-2 shots per game maybe. And believe it or not, the volleyball spike blocked shot does have value. Yes the shooting team gets the ball back but the intimidation factor can be huge. You get a couple of your shots tomahawked into the second deck of bleachers and you quit thinking of making the shot and you start worrying about whether Darth Vader is coming down the hall like Rogue One. 😱

Wilt, Kareem, Bill Walton, Kevin Garnett & Kobe Bryant... all had better High School careers than LeBron. LeBron's HS career was closer to Tracy McGrady's. LeBron was overrated since High School. He was just the guy that Nike & the NBA chose to used as their new image because Jordan was retired again, and Kobe had his legal case the same year that LeBron could enter the draft.., so the NBA couldn't use Kobe as their image.., so they put all their money (and the future of the league) on a bold call and bet for LeBron. It backfired.., cause LeBron is a loser that can't win.., he couldn't even stopped traveling and making offensive fouls (cause he does not have lateral movements) the league had to change the rules so that LeBron could play. They put so much money on LeBron, that when they saw that it was not working, they started to advertise him as much as they could to try to get more fans by exagerating how he plays, and many that don't know the game, or learned playing NBA 2K, think that is true. The commentators, analyst, news paper guys, all of them are paid to talk about LeBron "greatness" all the time, that way all of the basicx basketball mistakes he does goes by with some people not noticing. The majority of people that used to work on sports media and critized LeBron were been left out of work as years went by, to protect their investment. Don't believe the hype..., LeBron destroyed the league. They are in their worst shape ever (ratings are even lower than the 70') even though the population is higher than before. LeBron is just an advertisment job. Ànd only those who learn basketball on a PlayStation or an Xbox thinks he is one of the greatest.

So his favorite athlete as a youth was Mel Triplett. That's an interesting choice, and it would be equally interesting to hear Kareem explain why. Triplett was a durable fullback used as a blocker and frequently called upon in draw plays. He never gained a lot of yards or a big reputation, but he was an important part of those Giant offensive units in the late fifties-early sixties. You would expect a kid to say Jim Brown or Willie Mays, or Oscar Robertson- superstars. To pick Mel Triplett says something about Kareem's personal qualities. He never ran with the crowd.

OK, he was a pretty good high school player but did he ever go on to actually play in the NBA? I never heard of Lew Alcindor, I wonder whatever happened to him.
