I thought that from 1971-73 Wilt basically played Kareem to a draw overall, even though his scoring numbers were far below Kareem’s. Remember, Wilt was like the 4th option on offense for the Lakers, while Kareem was expected to score 30 points a game for the Bucks. He was their main man on offense. Wilt was not. Wilt still outplayed Kareem on the boards and as a rim protector.

@@frederickrapp5396 I was born in 1963 and started watching the NBA in 1971. The Milwaukee Bucks were my favorite team even though I lived in Washington state. You're right about Wilt in those last few years. He was basically the third option with Jimmy McMillian also being the third option, both McMillian and Chamberlain could score 20-30 points if needed. Wilt could have been a more go to option offensively but Jerry West and Gail Goodrich would both average 25 plus points during the 1971-72 season. Between 1970-71 through 1972-73, the Bucks and the Lakers were the most dominate teams. Unfortunately, they both played in the Western Conference, so they could never play each other in the finals. To me, the NBA was at it's best in the early 70s. The Knicks, Celtics, and Bullets in the East with the Lakers, Bucks, and a bunch of other teams that were very good in the West like Golden State, the Bulls, and the Suns. Wilt was even in those last few years still a great rebounder, shot blocker, and a great passer (distributer). Those were the days....sure do miss them.

True story: Lakers were not highly regarded at start of season by most experts. Bucks, Knicks, Celtics, were all considered much superior to Lakers. Baylor retired early in season. When Lakers started season at 6-3, I looked at their roster and said: “This team is loaded. They should win the NBA title. Macmillan will take over at small forward, and Baylor won’t be missed.” I did a player-player comparison with the world champion Bucks. Wilt-Kareem: even. West-Robertson: even. Dandridge-Macmillan: even. Goodrich-McGlocklin: slight edge Goodrich, Hairston-Perry: slight edge Hairston, Bench: slight edge Lakers, Coach: Sharman-Costello: even. I still have a 20th year anniversary Sports Illustrated commemorative issue honoring that winning streak. It has a summary to every one of the 33 games and the score and the leading scorers. The Lakers averaged 125 points per game during that streak if I remember correctly. In fact, most of the 33 games were not even close, the Lakers were dominating during that streak. Wilt said that most streaks are usually predicated on some luck being involved. But like he said, there were only a few close games during that streak. The Lakers were 39-3 and the Bucks were I believe 36-5 coming into that epic matchup. That game was uploaded on KZfaq. I've rewatched it. I think the Bucks pulled away at the end and won 120-104. Ironically, the Bucks had a 20 game winning streak the year before. Also, during the same time the Lakers were on their 33 game winning streak, John Wooden's U.C.L.A. Bruins were in the midst of the longest men's college basketball winning streak of all-time wich would end up being an 88 game winning streak. They finally lost to Notre Dame on national television when they blew a late lead. What's so interesting about the Lakers and U.C.L.A Bruins winning streaks is that the Lakers 33 game winning streak is the longest in pro sports history and still stands to this day, and the Bruins winning 88 game winning streak also stands to this day, and I don't think neither will ever be broken. What's fascinating about those two streaks is they were going on at the same time and in the same city of L.A.. What are the odds of that happening. Those were the good old days, sports were so much fun to watch back then. It's just not the same anymore. The NBA game today is so boring to watch....teams do nothing but shoot 3 pointers the whole game with 3 or 4 players standing behind the 3 point line waiting to hoist up another three. No low post game or midrange shots anymore. The old NBA was a much better game. I sure do miss those days.

Unfortunately, Wilt took a hard elbow to his jaw and teeth in the 60s. Wilt knocked the dude out with a jab but the damage was done and he had teeth issues for the rest of his life. Wilt had a root canal that went bad and he died about a year later.

Absolutely. Bird and Magic was a 'rivalry' because they were complete opposites of each other. Perfect marketing. In reality, they were just the two best players in the league. But they didn't play the same position and battle each other every possession. Chamberlain had to go through Bill Russell and KAJ to win rings. Players in the same position. Michael and Kobe would have been the best comparison to Wilt and Kareem. But Kobe never faced Michael in the play-offs. Would have been great to see those guys compete on that level.

Another detail I have checked out... Wilt had so many games of plus 80. pts + rbs. There are only a handful of players that achieved that once or twice in their whole career. Wilt did that close to 100 times. so many monster games! Russell did slow Wilt down offensively now and then, its to be expected, but overall, he was rarely more effective than anyone else. Wilt is in a category like Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretsky, and maybe Jim Brown. just another level that no one else comes close. Plus he was a nice guy and gave away millions, helped a lot of people.

That insane stat line was compiled over the course of 67 playoff games and came at the expense of 3 time all-star center Johnny Red Kerr, HOF center Bill Russell, HOF center Zelmo Beaty, 4 time all-star center Wayne Embry, HOF center Nate Thurmond, and mediocre center Connie Dierking.

Maybe it was just surprise on both of the old guys' parts at unexpectedly seeing the one player they knew was at their level, right in their house. I also think this was at a time when Kareem and Wilt had developed a bit of animosity toward each other. They had been friends when Kareem was 14, but he would have been around 22.

What struck me watching this video was how well spoken Wilt was when he was being interviewed. He sounded like a really intelligent guy. Kareem has that reputation too. It probably really helped that those guys spent the whole four years in college back then. When you compare them to the guys in the league today there's no contest. Ball players these days mostly sound like morons. Wilt and Kareem sound like scholars!

I felt the same way, Wilt was my favorite center and I patterned my game after Mr Clutch, especially his quick jumper. I loved watching that '72 Laker team!

Red Auerbach actually coached a 17 year old Chamberlain who was on Red's summer resort team in the Catskills. According to Chamberlain, Red Auerbach said the following. "Why don't you go to Harvard kid? And then I'll be able to pick you off in the territorial draft for the Celtics." However, Wilt went to Kansas. Russell was drafted in 1956, while Chamberlain was drafted in 1959, so imagine Russell and Chamberlain as teammates, along with all of those other Hall of Fame Boston Celtic players.

Prime Wilt had the unstoppable fadeaway on the left low block, the Dipper finger roll, the easy hook shot, and the powerful Dipper Dunk that nobody was blocking. Biggest problem, you were more apt to sprain an ankle, but the Nikes didn't entirely prevent that, either. The thick, padded soles, raised your foot considerably, which could take away some from the ankle support, compared to the Converse All Stars. There was a little trade off there. Just saying.

@@FuShengAlex Kareem’s 71 team he had 4 people average 15 and up, and the big O is by far a much better scorer than Hal Greer so no, and when Hal Greer played with Wilt he never averaged 24 and never in his career even averaged 25 for a season, yeah it’s a couple points but the Big O averaged 25 for a career and averaged 30 for the first 8 years of his career, Wilt never had a teammate average more points than him until he went to the Lakers

I agree with you Josh. Wilt needed to win 4 rings for me to consider him as the GOAT. He only won 2. That’s not enough. Wilt played on some excellent, excellent teams from 1965-73. However, Wilt usually came up short in the playoffs, and didn’t get it done. Too many Game 7 losses. If I had to pick 1 player to win a Game 7, I’d go with MJ. Wilt had too many near misses, despite playing on outstanding teams.

Wilt was more of the reason Boston won so much than Russell was. Like Kobe, wilt thought he could do everything himself and had trouble understanding how to utilize his teammates. Even when wilt decided to lead the league in assists it was all about him.

Bill Russell had more black teammates than Wilt had thru out their careers. That was a major advantage for Russell.

I don’t mean to brag, but in November 1971 I actually predicted that LA would win the 1972 NBA title. They were only 6-3 at the time, and everybody picked the Bucks to repeat as champions. Absolutely nobody picked the Lakers. Except me. I looked at LA’s roster, matched their players up 1-1 against the Bucks, and said: “Wow! This Laker team is loaded. As good as Bucks are, the Lakers are slightly better.” True story! LA went on to win 33 in a row , beat Bucks 4-2 in Western Finals, and Knicks 4-1 for 1972 NBA title.

That laker team was loaded and kareem had aging oscar and a good but not yet all star dandridge,,,,, wilt had monster power forwards hairston and bridges; mcmillian ( at time ) better than bobby D and hall of fame goodrich was real reason they beat milwaukee in semis- I watched!

Thank you! Yes that part of the video I also try to point out just how good Wilt and Kareem were too by using Hakeem as an example as he clearly dominated the Bulls in the early 90's. Kareem seemed to be giving him trouble in his late 30's... and older Wilt had to defend prime Kareem. Amazing.

The bulls never had a good center, let alone great during the mj era. So naturally the likes of longley, cartwright and past prime bigs would be no match. Hell magic shaq had his way lol. A true big man really only have himself to worry about. Between shaq, hakeem, kareem and wilt. None of them can stop the other. The greatest bulls would lose to other great teams. But get some wins as well. They were fortunate to be dominant in a declining big man era. While having the best guard in a growing guard era

@@Jiron127You make several excellent points and I would add that the worst matchup for Jordan's Bulls would be the 1966-1967 76ers. One can argue that the 1986 Celtics had the greatest front line in NBA history, but the most physically imposing front line to ever play resided in Philadelphia. The 290 pound Chamberlain, 270 pound Luke Jackson, and 230 pound Chet Walker dominated the NBA in the mid-late 60's and they would dominate the NBA in 2021. If you add Billy Cunningham off the bench, you have a front line that would be the Bull's kryptonite.

Since they'd be up against super teams of the 60-80's. So trading for hakeem or shaq would be the move to go with mj.

@@Jiron127 I agree. Today's NBA is stocked with terrific athletes whose basketball skills are generally one-dimensional. The all around player is no longer a centerpiece of today's NBA landscape. That landscape consists of very good guards/small forwards, good power forwards, and mediocre centers. In terms of mythical matchups, the 1991-1993 threepeat Bulls were 1-6 against Hakeem's Rockets, so those who believe that the Bulls would defeat any of the super teams of the 60-80's are borderline delusional. The 1996-1998 threepeat Bulls would have had a better shot of defeating some of those 60-80's super teams, but due to Longley's limited skill set, Rodman would have been required to play some center. Longley and/or Rodman against the likes of Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar, Reed, Walton, Malone, and even Parrish? Yikes.
