hey guys, welcome back to another KZfaq video. Today we are hooking up this 24 kW home generator by the brand Generac. This job definitely didn’t go as smoothly as I hoped, but we got er done. I always blow air with my big air compressor to clear out rocks , dirt ,and water bottles that people or kids put in there before you get back to pull cable in. I had a 6 inch pipe that I was going to pull (3) 500 mcm cables and 1 ground wire for (13,500 volts) a feed to a transformer and when I put air in it 12 water bottles blew out the end. I put pvc caps on my pipes now till I can get back to it . I still blow the pipe before I start anything.

Very clean install! That 3/4 looked like it was broken underground. Could be why there was so much dirt coming up. It always amazes me when owners of a multi-million dollar home cheaps out on an air cooled generator and partial home backup.

I used to say the same thing but after installing these for like 25 years I find the GC on the job isn't fully aware of anything but the bottom line, so $10k versus $20k - $40k, which might only be asked for if there was an engineer specing the job.

I've installed a couple of these Generacs and there is one at a facility I work at. I don't know about my previous installs but the other one has big trouble burning out starters in the winter when it is cold, a few years ago we installed a pan heater to try keep the engine temperature up, so far it has been ok since putting that in. Good work, be a bit safer on the ladders, we've all done it, but one day you or someone else won't get away with it.

@@MOERKMOERT Thanks for that product info. I had an inspector break my balls because I used bathroom silicone on both sides of an entry wall to seal wires to prevent condensation. Like using bathroom silicone because it usually does not form mildew . Inspector told me that it's not listed for that use. Told him I have silicone ice cube trays and silicone kitchen gadgets that are good safe. Not much harms the gasoline & oil resistant type THHN/THWN insulation.

I like it lol I mean It breaks that too perfect image of you a gorgeous female electrician doing everything easily and smoothly like a superhero, but here you're just a human like us. On social media content creators tend to only show the positive side of what they're doing or living as if their life is perfect like a dream. I don't like it, it's dishonest and misleading. I got to do my first transfer switch last Thursday. Luckily it was inside a warehouse, so no rocks. We used a lot of butter to pull the wires and it went smoothly😂

Karly , I am surprised you don't use the liquid cable slip on the conductors the stuff works great . if you run into a situation where you have to get dirt out of the conduit , compress air works great. And you can also blow a drag line through a conduit in seconds I learned that from the guys that install/ update gas station .

When you put so much time and effort to get it done just right, only to find out someone else, who just came and positioned thee generator, couldn't get it in the proper position. I felt your frustration. Retrofits are usually a nightmare. So much better when it's a completely new installation, and you can control all of it.

Always add some wire gel on the wires and some in the pipes . Don’t want to sound like a boss but very important to use torque wrench on lugs . Great job 👍

I loved being a sparky. The only stress being: falling far behind schedule due to unseen circumstances on a job. It took years of making the same mistake over before stepping back and allowing 1/2 day to the every scheduled job. Without a time bomb, the job is enjoyable, and somehow just as profitable.

Hi Karly, The more you learn about the NEC The easier it will make your job. 24KW generator has a 100 amp circuit breaker, You could have used three size #3 thwn copper gauge and one #8 gauge copper for the ground for the power conductors. Then quantity five 18 gauge thwn for the control wires, If they are all rated the same voltage they can all go in the same conduit. I don't know why somebody told you they need to be shielded, or as some of the other posts have said You could have used Generac TC Cable which has everything molded into one. Look over article 336.10 (9) in the NEC, Sorry I'm not sure what you using Canada but this is what we use. I really enjoy your videos take care

Valid point and there are only 3 wires in the bundle that DON"T need to be rated for line voltage... but everyone pulls THHN anyway so 99% of the time you could pull them together and still be within code.

Yep. I didn't want to say anything. I'm putting in a 26kw now and ordered the all in one cable. #2 copper is all that is needed.

@@oakoliver7183 that's good stuff and even at $15 a foot, it's way easier than pulling separate wires, plus you save on the labor and extra conduit. BTW, that cable has ALL of the wires rated for line voltage so that's how they get by the code requirements.

Worked 40+ years for a lawn Mower MFG that was bought out by B&S, one day we got a shipment in our Ga. warehouse straight from the Savannah port, we opened the trailer door and there was OVER 5 well known U.S. brand names on the boxes of ALL generators, and the kicker was they ALL came out of the same MFG plant in CHINA

I’m a Psych RN, but love doing hvac, plumbing and electrical projects at home. I’m currently working on my generator project, and while it’s definitely not as complex as this job in the video, I don’t think people need to be so quick to call the pros in if they’re aware of how electricity works and they feel comfortable. Guess that makes me an above-average Joe.

I've done several of those Generac generators and they are a pain sometimes. Because I've installed several of those generators I know what you installed is a 24kw. 100 amps for those who don't know. I've also installed the 48kw (200 amp) Generac generators. They're about 2 to 3 times the size of that one.

I would recomend safety PPE and proper Safety on a ladder also. Some times in life the little things count the most. Keep up the hard work.

When I was in landscape construction they always told me to keep the conduits clear of debris. We would even tape to the ends to make sure. I now see why. I had no idea it would be so hard to move cable through if there was some debris.

Hey so the way this system works is different then what you said. So the wires marked n1 and n2 are going to be your utility sensing wires. The generac evo controller installed on that 24kw gen is doing all the work for you. It senses when utility is lost (even just loose a leg or undervoltage condition) then it'll start the engine by itself and transfer the switch automatically. Hence automatic transfer switch (ats). The t1 wire is going to the controller for battery charging so it'll have 120 on it as well. Then there's battery voltage being sent from the gen for the board in the switch. Just to be used for the coils to switched and the there's some other functions on that board that can be used for building management. But in order for all this to work you have to register the unit with generac, otherwise you'll have to start the unit yourself and transfer yourself. Good luck out there! Pullin wires in the cold sucks. That's why I'm glad I work on mostly industrial generacs, they have block heaters that work great and keeping hands warm lol

When the conductors get stuck like that, what I have learned is to do quick and continuous jabs on the wires forwards while another pulls. I dont know why but it always works. It doesnt have to be fierce but continuous.

Highly recommend using Gen cable it’s $5-6 a foot but definitely worth it.

that cable is expensive, but if you plan from the start you can get it back on the labor and less conduit.

The line and low voltage can go in the same conduit if all conductors are rated for 600v per NEC No shield required per Generac. They even sell a tray cable with both high low voltage together no shield.

I think the take-away here can be broken into two key points: 1) Never, ever run 1/2" PVC underground. My rule of thumb is 1" or larger. It's all about making the wire pull easier, saving time and MORE money than the larger PVC costs to furnish and install. 2) When you show up to someone else's install, swab the underground conduit with a strip of cotton cloth or something similar to drag all the sediment and rocks out of the conduit before beginning the wire pull.

In Canada can you not use THHN with your line voltage cable? Generac’s is all I install and do in the states. We just use the tray cable from Generac has everything in it

Good to watch, use some lube when pulling cables. Silicone or washing up liquid !!!! Although in this case some numpty screwed up the groundworks. Felt the pain with the pinch , why don’t you have an Allen key driver so you can stick it on a ratchet, or T bar.

Pulling lube for those aluminum conductors would help, and of course when the PVC is installed correctly you won't have all the dirt and rocks. Get some MaxiFlex cut resistant gloves, they're worth the $.

This is really well timed because I'm currently trying to figure out if my parent's new house, with 400A service, needs a 400A generator even though only certain circuits might be powered. Sounds like yes but we're cringing at the price difference.

Good chance that house does NOT have 400 amp service. If there are a pair of 200 amp panels, it's probably a 320 amp service. I would seek profession advice because proper generator sizing is going to be outside the scope of someone in your shoes. BTW, profession advice might save you $10 - $20k so worth the effort.

Those generators transfer switches should be an automatic change over between line and generator power and then back. Once line power is lost, there is a short delay, just in case there is a quick return to line power, and then the generator fires and power is switched to generator.

As for the dirt in your conduit, I suspect, it was trenched and left open for quite a while and the sections unglued in which rain and debris got into the pipes.

Holy shit that looked like a nightmare, reminds me of one job i did back last summer we had to think outside the box, the conduit collapsed so we decided to bruteforce an xlpe cable underground we had on wire pulled a ground wire we connected the new cable with a new ground wire and a flex conduit for future use to the groundwire on one side and highjacked a telescopic lift from the factory we were working in and pulled the ground from the other side with mechanical force, and... it worked, we used meger to check if we hurt the sheathing and we didnt it was so uforic

Is good Idea put the mandrel before pull any wire inside the pipe because the mandrel clean any rock and tell you if the pipe is ok to pull the wire because something the pipes are broken or bended bad.

There's many different brands, but they all do the same thing. It's to prevent the aluminum from oxidizing. One brand is Noalox.

Got to ask Karly.....I always admired quality of your work and I aspire to do the same but that takes time and I am constantly under the gun. You mention many times that your jobs take longer than anticipated. How does your shop deal financially with jobs that come in over budget? I feel like this is an enormous issue nowadays and cannot be specific to our own shop.

Also on the "shed" situation. Those gens do not and are not supposed to go in buildings. They will void warenty and melt controllers and overheat. Check the manual. There can be a cover structure but the intake and exaust sides need to be open to the outside.

I’m not an electrician, nor do I know much about plumbing, but what if you took a drain snake and ran it through the conduit first? Idk if that would do anything, just an idea.

cmon karly , no wire lube ? Always swab the conduits or blow them out before pulling cable , especially if you didnt install them ! I winced when you got that pinch , cant tell ya how many times ive done that , still havent learned lol.

With a Generac you don’t need shielded cable for the control side even when pulling in with the line voltage

you are correct. You only need all of the control wires to be rated for line voltage. (instead of 12 volts DC)

If you’re doing that correctly the ats should automatically transfers power with the customer having to do nothing. Which is why is called an automatic transfer switch. Use generacs wire next time, in one 1.25” conduit.
