I was gonna say Beetmon could've been written out as Beetomon which might've given it the sound of a foreign pronunciation of beetle, but apparently the name in Japanese is Blitzmon. Kana checks out. Burittsumon. That kinda works with the lightning connotation, but I agree Beetlemon isn't bad.

When I saw Beetmon for the first time my brain autocorrected to Beatmon and now I associate Beetlemon with drum solos and electric guitars.

I won hundred percent agree with machinedramon sounding like a better name then mugendramon, and in terms of sounding I actually prefer it to mugendramon but working conceptually it gets complicated because both names have solid foundation mugendramon because his core has infinite power so adding infinity to his name makes sense to reflect that he’ll never run out of power But Machinedramon also invokes just whole mechanical machine like he is to the point of having other cyborg digimon parts making him up. Heck one can argue the name is meant to invoke how much of his humanity (or digimon equivalent) he has given up when compared to other cyborg like Digimon because compared to all of them he is the most “machine”

That's because Gokumon came first and the name is a reference to hell (jigoku). Gokuwmon came later, referencing Son Wukong, so even its japanese name had to change Gokumon is ゴクモン Gokuwmon is ゴクウモン Notice the ウ character in the later, that's the W in the romanization. There is an argument for calling it Sonwukongmon or something like that, but, oh, well.

Gokumon's English name was Reapermon before Gokuwmon existed, so avoiding confusion wasn't actually the reason for the change.

Yeah, I prefer Kazemon because her name's associated with the wind, rather than the generic "fairy". Also hard agree on Myotismon rolling off the tongue better.

@@mdudegamer True, but I think they chose Fairymon since Fairies are closely related to "Ancient Mythology", so Thematically, it does work. Just the name is more bland than unbuttered dry bread.

I grew up with the German dub and we used most of the Eng. dub names, had few of our own names and also used Jap. names that weren't used in the Eng. dub. As an example, for me it's Yatagaramon not Crowmon. Our "own" dub names are just minor changes to existing names. What comes to my mind are Biomon instead of Piyomon/Biyomon and Revolvermon instead of Revolmon/Deputymon.

That's because pokemon names aren't in english in the original, so they get translated and add a bit of flavor to market it better in the west. Digimon names are already in english, there is zero reasons to change anything because the original were absolutely fine.

@@ThatFruityGuy Joe's crest was the Crest of Sincerity in Japanese, which got localized into the Crest of Reliability in the West. It was also called the Crest of Honesty in the official Toei subs for Adventure 02.

I think a better translation of Mimi's crest would've been the Crest of Kindness, since Honesty (The better translation of Joe's Crest) is much more fitting for Joe and Mimi's crest is supposed be about her moral purity. Being "pure of heart" as it were. Sincerity doesn't really convey that as well compared to Kindness, which is how Mimi's purity manifests in her actions.

Didn’t help with Bastemon or Minveramon’s designs as well. How whatever company has the localization rights wants to do with it, their marketing, “we have to reach the broadest audience” can absolutely hinder names and designs.

Agreed heavily. I hate Lobomon’s Japanese name. It feels and sounds lazy to me.

What's interesting to me is that in America, the Digimon community is pretty divided between the original and dub names while the Pokémon community exclusively uses dub names. I wonder why that is.

Pierrot is a French word for clown, while Pied is a reference to the Pied Piper. Personally I like Piedmon more because of that reference. It makes him sound more powerful and menacing.

Same thing I told the others: Gatomon is the name of the species this particular one is a part of. It's not HER name. When it comes to groups consisting of multiple genders, or singular lifeforms where the gender can vary, the male variation is used as the gender-neutral. "A cat" in general is "Un Gato", and "The cats", provided at least 1 in the group is male, is "Los Gatos". Gato for Gatomon is correct regardless of the fact that Kari's Gatomon is female. Because the species that is Gatomon, which is what the name refers to, can be either gender.

I'm the same actually. Samudramon I always assumed was derived from Samurai and Dragon, which sounds way more badass IMO.

Hm...I agree with one or two these, but not all. And because that's not helpful on its own, and I've thought and researched way too much digimon stuff over the years, lemme get wordy here: Duft means scent, but this is an easy agreement from me - Leopardmon sounds way better, even if it does make the Leopard Mode sound a bit reduntant. So. 'Chack'mon. This one is a little messy. See, in Japan, there's technically two names for everything - the version written in kana that matches Japanese pronunciation, and the 'official' romanized name. This 'official' version is *usually* either close to the pronunciation or matches the intent of it changed to me more English-y, but sometimes they, uh, miss the mark a bit. (That's how we get stuff like Halsemon/Holsmon or Arukenimon/Archnemon - so close! - instead of Horusmon and Arachnemon that was clearly intended. And the infamous Picklemon, ridiculously still official, instead of Piccolomon as actually pronounced in Japan.) Chack should really be Chaku, shortened from a word for ice accumulation. Kumamon, on the other hand, has ALSO gone back and forth for both this Digimon and Bearmon. While Bearmon is already in English, the usage of Kumamon isn't exactly surprising for it, yeah? Honestly, all of this probably would have gone better if they had just stuck with the development names, either Shirokumon (from Shirokuma, 'polar bear') or Polarmon. I definitely prefer Sleipmon - besides matching the design better, we already have Centarumon (which is an entirely different rant I won't get into now). No need to double up on an even more corrupted version of centaur when it already has a more appropriate name. Penmon...I have mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, I don't disagree with you. One the other hand, the 'guin' part of Penguinmon doesn't flow very well in the 'mon' part. Maybe just dropping the n to make Penguimon would be better, less of a hard stop. The more I think on it, the better that sounds. Probably don't go so far as to hit Pengumon though, as it brings to mind other unrelated characters. Puppetmon - hard disagree on the 'Pokemon' reasoning there, Pinochimon really isn't that close and I don't think that's a good reason even if it was, but I do think Puppetmon flows much better in English even if you lose a little of the reference. Rabbitmon/Bitmon? Yeah, no arguments on that one. Bitmon is just a cheap 'it's a digital being' without much to back it up, Rabbitmon is better here. Bitmon does flow better, but I don't think it's quite enough to overcome the loss of clarity this time. Salamon/Plotmon - so the story goes that when the anime was being dubbed, they came up with the dub name for Plotmon before ever having a picture of it, much less an explanation of the original, assumed it was probably catlike and named it after one of the producer's cats. Of course, as it turns out, it was a dog...that's also where the name comes from, the Plott Hound. It's also thought that it might be a corruption of Prototype, what with Japanese pronunciation, though that seems less certain and less likely given the specifics of the kana. I'd probably add the other t to make it Plottmon and keep that, personally, but if the story is true about where the dub name came from it's not like the dubbing team had modern info to go off of. Viximon/Pokomon - again, I don't really agree with your 'it sounds a little like Pokemon, and that's instantly bad' sort of reasoning. People will make comparisons anyways or they won't, and anything short of a Digimon actually named Pokemon isn't going to make much of a difference or be that confusing unless taken quite a bit out of context, in which case nothing matters and you can't prevent it. It's closer this time, but Poko is still different, with its own meaning. That said, unlike the reason, I don't feel too strongly about these names in particular. I like the cuter sound of 'poko' for a stage II baby a little more myself, but they both work fine. While I do have problems with some of the attitudes there, as far as actual articles, Wikimon is a great reference. They have etymology sections on the names, so it's good anytime you're wondering 'what does that MEAN' in the future.

@@marissablackwing just want to start off by talking about the end of your comment, I'm well aware of the etymology sections of the pages and such, and I even looked at them before making the comments. My "what does this mean" was more meant sarcastically and rhetorically, in other words I wasn't actually looking for an answer to them. I also wasn't using Wikimon, I was using digimon fandom or Digimon Wikia or whatever you want to call it. That said, I have had issues with attitudes and such on various wikis as well and do tend to just use them for info mostly now anyways. Yeah, Leopardmon Leopard Mode is a bit redundant, but it does work better. I'm more or less aware of how romanizations and such work. I didn't entirely pick up on the Halsemon being Horusmon thing (it still doesn't feel right, but it's whatever, I would have just gone with Horusmon). Polarmon or Polarbearmon or some version thereof would have worked for Kumamon. If they wanted to keep the name Japanese sounding perhaps they could have gone with Yukikumamon or Yukumamon or something like that. I'm not saying Sleipmon isn't more or less appropriate for the Digimon, I agree, it works better with the design. the angle I'm coming at this with is if you have the choice to name something after Sleipnir or Centaurs for an English speaking audience you should realize that the audience would be more familiar with what a Centaur is as opposed to what Sleipnir is, and that Sleip is close to already existing English words like Sleep and Sleigh and such, and that may cause confusion with the audience about what the name is actually meant to be and whether or not something else was meant instead of what was actually meant. I don't have as much of an issue with Penguinmon as you seem to, but I wouldn't be opposed to something like Penguimon or maybe even something like Pengmon (though I believe Peng is also something different in Chinese/Japanese). Pinochimon is closer to Pokemon than you're giving it credit for, it's essentially just Pokemon with an extra "in" put in between. Also yes, as I mentioned in my OP I'm well aware of the Pinocchio connections and such. I also agree Puppetmon does work better though. Yeah, IDK why the Japanese name for Rabbitmon just didn't go with like Usagimon or Bunnymon or Bunbunmon or something like that. As stated earlier I did read the etymology section of Salamons page, so I am aware of all that you mentioned. What I was getting at is no one really knows what a Plott Hound is at least not in the US, so there isn't that connection there and plot means something different in English (as stated in my OP), so that probably helped in the confusion as well. It should have just been like Puppymon or Doggymon or whatever. Also, maybe it's the Pokemon fan in me, but it does bother me a bit that a Puppy evolves into a Cat. With Pokomon it's not a "it sounds like Pokemon and so it's instantly bad" like you assume, I'm a huge Pokemon fan, have been since Gen 1 and the cards and the Anime and such, so anything even sounding close to Pokemon isn't bad. What I was getting at with that is that again, much like I mentioned with Kentaurosmon in this comment, playing to the audience works better in this case, with Pokomon sounding close to Pokemon it confuses the audience into thinking it's some kind of Pokemon or Pokemon Parody in the Digimon world or whatever and then have them be disappointed when its not. Plus again with many names I mentioned an English speaker would be like "what's a Poko?" Whereas Viximon makes much more sense to an English speaker "ok it sounds cutesy so it's probably a small creature and a Vixen is a fox (both in animal and in sexual connotations), so it's probably a cute baby fox, and would you look at that it is".

@@Chimeragui while that's true, you aren't acknowledging my argument, that by calling it Penmon (or Daipenmon) it makes it sound like it's a sentient writing utensil instead of Penguin. Also, I think it's called Daipenmon in both English and Japanese because as far as I know it hasn't yet shown up in English media and as such hasn't been given an English name, so they are using the name Daipenmon for it as a placeholder until it gets an actual English name, which I assume would be something like Popsiclepenguinmon or something similar.

Problem is that you are using a dubism (the last evolutionary stage being called Mega) to explain the Japanese name. In Japan the last stage is called Ultimate, so Digimon like Wargreymon and Metalgarurumon had already reached it, meaning that your explanation makes no sense.
