RE: 5:51 I don't know if anyone has commented this yet, but when the first V-pet was localized in the United States "Devimon" became "Darkmon" and "Monzaemon" became "Teddymon."

When it comes to leopardmon, i think some better alternatives would have been something like "primal mode" or "savage mode" or "feral mode"

Its funny cause if we kept the spanish language for Ranamon, "Lana" directly translates to just "Wool"

My personal pick for this topic is Samudramon. Gaiomon is one of my favourite Digimon, but Samudramon just sounds so much less imposing, so I'm glad it didn't stick. On the topic of the Bond forms, I'd have been a lot happier with Bond of Bravery if Gabumon had gotten Bond of Heart. Would make for a fun little nod to Brave Heart

One of my favorite simultaneous fails and wins has to be Piccolomon. English: Alright, not a lot of people know that Piccolo means small, they’ll confuse it with the instrument or the DBZ character. But it’s a Pixie, so let’s say Piximon. Japan: Crap, we didn’t think of that! Uh, uh, oh! Picklemon! English: P-pickle?!

Creepymon is weird... Because i totally see a ghost-inspired rookie with that name

GOD, I'm always bringing up MedicalGallantmon, I don't think I will ever get over that. It's hilarious. The one that's been annoying me the most recently is Meicoomon evolving into Maycrackmon, and like, Mei was already in their name, how do you MISS that. If they were changing either at all, it should have been to Mai, as in Maine Coon, the cat breed it's based off. Digimon's localisation is a complete cluster-truck and is so frustrating sometimes hahaha

Ba’almon to Reapmon is always one of my pet peeves. It implies a connection to Reapermon though it doesn’t. And then there is both names Persiamon and Beastmon for Bastemon. I’m just glad most fusion name changes were ignored.

My personal pet peve of a localization name is Omnishoutmon. Yeah I know it's technically related to Omnimon/Omegamon, so paralleling the localization so it lines up is understandable...if not for the literal Omega symbols all over his evolution sequence. Kind of hard to handwave the Omega-name when the symbol is just THERE.

A very minor defense of Bond of Bravery: It might be a licensing/Merchandising issue. the trademark for merchandising was first placed on the wrong translation and they have to keep it because of that. Think about how in Dragon Ball Super, we and the characters call the form 'Super Saiyan Blue," but every merchandise and transformation/form in video games is called "Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan" or "SSGSS." They called it that in the first release, and have to keep calling it that for merchandising/Branding reasons. It's still dumb, but the translator/localizers hands might be tied by legality and the higherups because of that.

The Creepymon thing still to this day bugs me. If you really had to change his name from Demon to something less....offensive, I guess, Couldn't they have gone with something else? Fearmon, Terrormon, Wrathmon, these aren't great names, but they're better than Creepymon.

This is a pretty solid list but SlushAngemon not making it in the video is a little sad - I forget if it was on Twitter or With The Will but I remember even Ben Diskin was annoyed by that when they recorded Fusion, ha.

Funnily enough "Lana" from Lanamon DOES have a connection to water but in the funniest way possible, there's a character named Lana in Pokemon Sun and Moon who specializes in water type pokemon. Side note I actually checked to see if Lana's name was a reference to anything, since some pokemon character names are references/puns, it's apparently a reference to the Hawaiian word for "afloat" or a shortened version of the Hawaiian word for water lily.

Yeah, it always pissed me off that Sleipmon was chamged to fucking "Kentaurusmon". Sleipmon is such a cool name! Same goes for Duftmon. And this applies to the japanese names too but they should have called the Bond evolutions "BraveGreymon" and "NobleGarurumon".

I guess Ranamon being called Lanamon is just good ol fashion Engrish. Same way Zoro from One Piece was called Zolo. Instead of getting a written name for the character the name was told through a conversation.

Did you know that Tailmon was originally designed to be a mouse, hence why she still has her mouse ears and mouse tail? Her prototype name was Hatsukanezumon, a pun to hatsuka-nezumi („house mouse“). Also, Cherubimon is pronounced with a hard K.

One that always bugged me is FlareLizamon becoming Flarizamon while DarkLizamon became DarkLizardmon. Even though in Digimon World they changed it to Darkrizamon so it would match and then they changed it back to not match. Then there's the whole question of why change either of them anyway because the original names work just fine in English. Arguably better than the other options.

I've grown to love how silly and crazy dubs can, with censorship and translation errors sometimes you just gotta say oops and hope no one notices until their older lol

3:23 Yu-Gi-Oh has had the same problem. "Except 'Frog the Jam'" is probably the most famous, but one of my favorites is that "Hundred-Eyes Dragon" had to be erratad to "Hundred Eyes Dragon" because Red-Eyes, specifically with a hyphen, is an archetype.

I think for Leopardmon, they should have called it "Beast Mode" for the translation.

There is also one thing. Then Digimon Xros Wars got its dubbed version, Digimon Fusion, they dubbed ChibiKamemon, to ChibiTortomon. Why? He is clearly a Kamemon, not a Tortomon who is a different species of Digimon.

Speaking of the Vemmon thing, I remember watching a subbing of Revenge of Diaboromon that butchered the names of Veemon and Wormmon to Beemon and Bamumon. Yes, really. However, the one odd Digimon name I will always remember was the time in the Digi-Battle cards released around the time of Digimon the Movie where Wendigomon/Wendimon was instead printed as "Endigomon". Even to this day, I can't think of Wendigomon without thinking of that.

I find it weird that for all the Adventure shilling Frontier’s dub had… they removed the Leomon reference when they localized Kaiser Leomon as Jaeger Loweemon. I still don’t get that.

There is one that really irritates me and that is mercurymon, it's cool to see some olympos 12 members having a planet name but because they already dubbed mercuremon from frontier as mercurymon, they decided to just rearrange and change mercurymon to merukimon which is the dumbest thing ever. They could have maybe use any word or other language word for mercury but they decided to just rearrange stuff.

Great vid Karn!!! Something I noticed while watching the dub of adventure 2020 is they verbally say Scorpiomon. However when he appears and they put his name on screen it says Skullscorpiomon!! Then a few episodes later they say Mammon instead of Mammothmon and Yukidarumon instead of Fridgimon and their names on screen are the same as the ones said by the characters!!!

Speaking of bad dubbing for the series in the first season of Digimon in Hebrew they translated Agumon's attack "pepper breath" perfectly from the English version so a few years later when the fifth season was finally dubbed what did they do.... they changed the name from " pepper breath" to "hot mouth" and when I heard it for the first time at the time, I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt I couldn't believe they did something like that they were given the name of the attack on a silver platter and they thought to themselves "Nah... hot mouth Sounds better than pepper breath" oh.... the stupidity XD

when i was a kid playing DW3 i thought "oh Vemmon like venemous cus he's like an evil snake lizard thing" but now the alien connection makes so much more sense considering he's kind of like a cyborg xenomorph

I don't know if there's ever been any statement about it, but I highly doubt the Xros Wars dub team thought ahead that much with changing Lilithmon to Laylamon. I'm convinced that they only chose that name just to arbitrarily make that one Eric Clapton joke in at least one scene.

Leopardmon/Duftmon is actually based off a lion...who has a leopard-like form. There's a reason why one of his previous evolution forms is Leomon, and he even calls himself a "lion-knight". So it's pretty weird when it comes to him

Here's another for ya, Bandai changing Cyclomon to Cyclonemon! Somebody at Bandai mistook the name of the CYCLOPS Digimon for a wind storm. 20+ years later and it has yet to be fixed. Of course, there's also the names Toei forced onto the English dubs like LoadKnightmon, Rotosmon, Supinomon, and SlushAngemon.

Honestly, it's wild how often they go back and forth between names, less of an issue now but I remember Dawn and Dusk used both Sleipmon and Duftmon names, among a few other transliterations that aren't used much or at all anymore.

Kerpymon always confused me, too, to the point I had to look it up years ago. Apparently, the name came from the Kewpie doll, but when the word "Kewpie" was pronounced phonetically in Japanese, it sounded like "kerpy"hence, Kerpymon.

It's funny how many of these are the result of multiple translation passes. Kerpymon (cherubi- from English into the kerpy- romaji and then back into English), the Gure also sounds like the romaji for Grey, Rana and Lana because Japanese doesn't have a one-to-one translation for the "l"/"r" sound, but are otherwise the same word.

Yu-Gi-Oh has an incredible problem with the names in localization for card effects, where often cards contain "not including XY). I believe it's not the only one. Why not just give cards an extra tag and then just target the tags. You can just tag every greymon and then you don't run into the named architype issue. Maybe that's just my software development background speaking, where checking against text is always a bad idea because of exactly this issue. Just give something a non text value, it reduces something like this easily.

Weird thing I had with BEMmon: When I saw it as a child, in Digimon World 3, called Vemmon, I was so confused, because I always read it as Veemon, but that was not looking like one, made me so confused until years later where I found out I misread.

Totally agree with your opinion for "Bond of Bravery", but I more interested by the idea of changing "Bond of Friendship" instead. Love the idea to give everyone synonyms. Though Lana is in alot languages in this case Lana is Greek in origin, it's a girl's name that means Buoyant which makes sense considering that it's referring to the fact all her forms look feminine and her being a water Digimon.

Though recently it’s got me thinking I’ve been playing a lot of digimon games recently and as you probably know there are obviously sometimes we’re there are final bosses that aren’t ‘digimon’ per say And then I was like “I wonder canonically how they scale” like Digimon world 2 had like the guardians who in the translation of the game say they created various types of digimon then there are the others like mother eater, overlord Gaia and so on then there are the ones who are digimon Like is Galactimon, Exogrimmon, Chronomon destroy mode or destormon are stronger then something like arcadiamon. I’m not saying making a video on it just curious on your thoughts since you would probably know better then I since I casually play the games

Couldn't they call Doruguremon "Dorugraymon" using the A-spelling as a way to keep the nod to the Greymon family without making them part of the species? Same goes for BurningGreymon, although I'd rather have Bandai revert its name to Vritramon instead. I'm surprised ElDradimon, BioSupinomon and BioRotosmon weren't mentioned. Those are as bad as Kurisarimon, if not worse.

This was a fun video. Interesting to hear about some of these that I wasn't aware of. As far as my thoughts on your picks: 1. Medicalgallantmon, I understand why it's probably that way, typos in the naming and character limits or whatever, but even so, if it's meant to be Medievalgallantmon you'd think they'd maybe change it to like Chivalrygallantmon or Gallantmon: Dark Ages Mode or something like that to make it closer to the word medieval. 2. Dorugreymon, yeah, I'm pretty much in agreement there, it's a simple translation error. I am curious if they will ever go through and fix that issue though. 3. Kerpymon, I'll be honest I always thought it was Kerphymon with h between the p and y. I also sort of figured Kerpymon was specifically only meant to be for the evil form from Frontier and whatever and then when it was the good form it was Cherubimon. All that being said, the only thing I could see for this one is they wanted it to sound like the video game character Kirby or whatever, but even that's probably a stretch. It might be a kind of translation error thing too, like maybe for some reason they thought Cherubi was a Japanese word or something and so they tried translating it, so they translated the Ch like in chasm or chimera or whatever giving it a k sound, then they took the e and added it on for ke, then translated the ru into just an r for ker, then took the bi and translated it to py for kerpy. 4. Creepymon, I understand why they wanted to change the name from Daemon, but I agree Creepymon does sound a bit goofy for what it's supposed to be and everything. I agree something in the vein of Darkmon or Evilmon would have probably worked better. 5. Lanamon, I understand this one, it's a translation error name, sort of in the same vein of Raidramon being Lighdramon, they do the standard change the R to an L thing. I do think Frontier is part of the issue too though, with Ranamon being a southern belle in Frontier they may have wanted to give her a southern sounding name. 6. Leopardmon: Leopard Mode, in all honesty I think the names for this one should be reversed, the more beastial one should just be Leopardmon and the humanoid one should be like Leopardmon: Warrior Mode or something like that. Besides that though, I agree that the Leopard form should be closer to something like Leopardmon: Beast Mode or something like that. 7. Varodurumon, yeah, this one is just a translation error name too, it should be an easy fix once they recognize it and assuming they want to fix it. 8. Vemmon, yeah, just a simple translation error name, though I could see it being them wanting it to sound cooler, and Vem sounds cooler than Bem, not to mention most aren't familiar with the BEM abbreviation anyways. 9. Kentarosmon, I too am a fan of mythology and such, so I'm aware of what Sleipnir is and such, however this is one I disagree with you on, it's not that Centaur is a better description of this Digimon than Sleipnir, it's simply because most English speakers, unless they are into mythology and such, likely don't know what Sleipnir is and as you say later in the video may confuse it with the word sleep and stuff like that, so the only mythological horse creature that would apply here that most know about is a Centaur even though it's not exactly the same thing. 10. Agumon: Bond of Bravery, yeah, I understand what they were trying to go for, and in most other situations it probably would have been fine, but with it specifically being Digimon and with it being specifically an object identified as Courage, you'd want to keep that the same because of the importance and everything. Also, to get a bit off subject, when will we see Biyomon: Bond of Love, Palmon: Bond of Sincerity, Tentomon: Bond of Knowledge, Gomamon: Bond of Reliability, Patamon: Bond of Hope, and Salamon (or Gatomon): Bond of Light? It's only fair they get these forms too if Agumon and Gabumon get them.

My apologies, this isn't related to the video but I've always wondered why the digi-destine's digimon never stayed digivolved. Even in Tri, after several years they are all still rookies, with the exception of Gatomon. Is natural digivolution ever explained in official material? Does each version of digimon have it's own rules? I've yet to find a video that discusses this.

Sleipmon to Kentaurosmon annoys me for 3 reasons 1) Like you said it’s based on Sleipnir 2) the name Sleipmon is used in Digimon World Dawn/Dusk which is where I first saw it 3) One of its main attacks is literally named after a thing in Norse mythology so why would they not keep the theme?

They literally just need a single digimon nerd on the localization team that they run everything by before Finalizing.

It's interesting to see which changes other localisations keep from the English one. We also have Tailmon as Gatomon, but correct me if I'm wrong I'm pretty sure in German Leopardmon is still called Duftmon. Edit: Seems like Daemon is also in fact called Daemon or Deemon in German.

In last evolution kizuna when Tai blows the whistle you see Sora's digivice and it's grey and cracked. Did Biyomon die offscreen? And before the others?

Tbh I think bandai should hire someone and give them all the digimon lore, names and images; to act as the lorekeeper for translations. Their job is to go through all the digimon (and new digimon) and re-translate them for consistancy. Their dub names can still be used overseas, but should be considered as Nicknames, allowing names like Omnimon to continue to exist until there is a new digimon in japanese called Omnimon; in which case since it's a nickname it can just be phased out. That way everyone would be happy. Would it take a while? Yep. You'd need a full team working on it too, but it's clear they need it. Especially with situations like Orcamon where there is actually an Orcamon but the dub decided to call Dolphmon as Orcamon, making this really akward and confusiing situation appear.

Oh man, i'm getting Yu-Gi-Oh vibes with the excluded names/archetypes. "Use this card with monsters with this word in the name except that one" 😅
