ಇದೊಂದು ಭಕ್ತಿ ಭಾವದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಕವನ. ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನನ್ನೋ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಮತ್ತೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಹಂಬಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನಸ್ಸು ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಗೊಂಡು, ಹೊಸ ಚೈತನ್ಯ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ಬೆಳಕು ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಸಂಕೇತ. ತಮಸೋಮಾ ಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ಗಮಯ ಎಂಬ ಆಶಯದಂತೆ ಕತ್ತಲು ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಈ ಬಾಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ನಡೆಸು ಎಂಬ ಆರ್ತವಾದ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಈ ಗೀತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗೆ, ದೈವತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಶರಣಾದ, ಅಹಂಕಾರದ ಲವಲೇಶವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಹೃದಯ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಡುತ್ತಿದೆ- ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿದು ನಡೆಸೆನ್ನನು….
ಬಿ. ಎಂ. ಶ್ರೀ ಅವರು ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದ ಈ ಕವನ, "ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಗೀತೆಗಳು" ಕವನ ಸಂಕಲನದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
ಈ ಕವಿತೆಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಚಲನ ಮೂಡಿಸಿತಲ್ಲದೆ, ಭಾವಗೀತೆಯ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲೂ ಹೊಸ ನಾಂದಿ ಹಾಡಿತು.

ಕಾರ್ಡಿನಲ್ ನ್ಯೂಮನ್‍ರವರು (1801-90) ಗೊಂದಲ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಯಾತನೆ, ಮತ್ತು ದೈಹಿಕ ನೋವಿನ ಒತ್ತಡದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅವರು ಬರೆದ "ಲೀಡ್,ಕೈಂಡ್ಲೀ ಲೈಟ್" ("Lead, Kindly Light") ಎಂಬ ಈ ಕವಿತೆಯು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಜನರಿಗೆ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ನಕ್ಷತ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಇದು ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಮೆಕಿನ್ಲೆ ಅವರ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕವಿತೆ. ಬಿ.ಎಂ.ಶ್ರೀ. ಯವರು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದು ಮೂಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ.
ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಅರ್ಥಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ತೋರು ಬದಲಿಗೆ ದೇವರೂಪನಾದ ಬೆಳಕೇ ನನಗೆ ದಾರಿತೋರು ಎಂದು ಭಾರತದ ವೇದಾಂತಕ್ಕೆ
ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ವಿಶೇಷ, ಅದು ಮೂಲಕ್ಕೂ ಭಂಗತರದಂತೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ವಿಶಾಲ ಅರ್ಥಮೊಡುವುದು.

"Lead, Kindly Light," by John Henry Newman (1801-90), was written when Cardinal Newman was in the stress and strain of perplexity and mental distress and bodily pain. The poem has been a star in the darkness to thousands. It was the favourite poem of President McKinley.
