This is an incredible story. I've heard the story about Zozi La from locals and other anecdotes from the Army. Till that time tanks had never operated at that height ever, anywhere in the world. So it was assumed that they cannot. Also, Zozi La is not really a pass in the normal sense. It used to be a khacchar (donkey) track only. The trail was expanded at nights so that Pakistan wouldn't come to know about it. The tanks were stored at a huge natural cave near Sonmarg to keep them hidden. Story goes that on the day that tanks went up the pass they often blasted rocks with their shells at passages that were still too narrow to pass. When they reached the top and were spotted by Pakistani gunners positioned at heights, Indian Army heard radio messages from them to their command shouting incredulously that Indian tanks were crossing Zozi La. The reply apparently was full of expletives ordering the poor soldiers to not drink on duty 😄 This was an impossible mission, spearheaded by an Indian Army officer against huge scepticism from most of the Army brass. If we hadn't won this than most of Ladakh would today be with Pakistan. I hope we see a Bollywood movie some day depicting this victory and celebrating the valour.

Janab Maqbool Butt Sherwani was Sher of Baramulla. After the war the volunteers of Militia were regularised in the Indian Army. A Battalion is named after Sherwani ie 2JAKLI. Thanks for mentioning his bravery.

Now a day's andhbhkts , try to oversimplify the Kashmir conflict , with right wing portician even portraying as if all Muslims of Kashmir wanted to join Pakistan from the beginning . And because of nehru indian army didn't conquered entire state . And all the political parties of Kashmir get funding and support separation of Pakistan . But this is totally opposite . It was Nehru's decision to integrate Kashmir with india. But hari Singh's signing of document to join india wasn't enough because nawab of junagrh also signed to join Pakistan , but we took junagrh because we claimed that nawab has no authority , people of junagrh has to make the choice. Same way opinion of Kashmiris special Muslims and their leaders fighting British backed dectatorship , was important. And majority of Muslims in Kashmir , including majority of political parties decided to go with india , with some special rights under article 370. It was because of hatemongering against Muslims from other states that boosted separatist movement . Decade after Kashmir becoming part of india

Gen Kulwant Singh was one of the Founders of our Sainik School. Once ,during a meeting with our School's students ,Gen Kulwant Singh shared his anguish. He said , ' Till this day I cannot understand the reasons why , when we were about to retake Muzaffarabad , PM Nehru ordered us to stop . ?

India's military operations in Kashmir valley in 1947-1948 owe their logistical facilitation to then derelict road between Jammu and Srinagar which came to India after the Accession of the Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir. This narrow road had wooden bridges etc and was used only twice a year during the biannual shifting of Riyasat's capital between Jammu and Srinagar . The Maharajas of J and K wished avoiding the main highway passing through the territory of the British .for the sake of privacy and hence had got built a simple though dangerously passing across the formidable Pir Panjal mountains . This road was used nearly only twice a year nearly exclusively for carrying Darbar shifting specific traffic. Just before the convoys moved on this road it was repaired in a makeshift manner . Before 1947 the main highway connecting Jammu and Srinagar ran through Sialkot and Muzzafarabad - the Jhelum Road -then under British India's direct control.After Partition of India this went to Pakistan .. In fact during the time delay in Maharaja Hari Singh's decision on Accession of J and K ,Pakistan's military and political leaders would arrogantly boast that Kashmir was in Pakistan's pocket as for even ' one can of kerosene ' the Valley depended on the Sialkot Highway which Pakistan had under her control. .Maharaja's special purpose Darbar shifting road which was first used for Indian Army's logistical support to the Valley and connectivity to Ladakh - through the Zoji La Pass . In its constantly upgraded form this erstwhile simple / rudimentary road is , now ,India's main and world standard Highway to Kashmir
