VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
In this video, I have attempted to show why I believe that the Philidor Defense is not really a good option, especially for lower rated players. The Philidor is rarely played by top grandmasters because the defensive task is thankless, and rarely results in anything better than a draw for Black. The Philidor is even worse as an option for players rated below 2000. They often get extremely passive positions and are lost by move 20.

Pro way how to play Philidor is this way: 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 e5. But ofc you have to be prepared for dxe5 dxe5 Qxd8+ Kxd8 which is considered equal position with chances on both sides by chess theory.

Someone must have done a video on this opening recently since I faced it twice within a few games. Although this is aimed for black, it will certainly help me as white, too.

Thank you Kaspa, very interesting. What is your thought on the Black Lion, which is basically also a Philidor? 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 (white thinks black is playing a Pirc) 3. Nbd7 Black plans to push e5 and develop bishop to e7. edit:. I just now watched your rat video. I see there is some overlap in the c4 lines. Very cool and I will seriously consider the rrrrat!

Hmm, in the first game, doesn't black just need to move Ra6 and life is good? The queen cannot take otherwise goodbye Rxf7

Philidor defense rules! What do you have problem with? I mean I play it in different order as opposed to your video and I never lose at least at this early stage.

If you watched this video up to the end, you will recall that I did mention at 07:26 to say, "I don't have a problem with the Philidor Defense, but I only have a problem with how people play it, and how passive it can be to most lower rated players. In fact, I even suggested the right way of playing the Philidor at 07:26. Please let me know if I have cleared out the air. Thanks!

@@kaspachessofficial I'm very curious how you managed to get to know the way of playing Philidor by different chess players. I play it totally differently and as I wrote before - in different order. The fact that this defense is the one most of your opponents do not expect you to play can make your winning chances higher since Philidor is a bit passive at the beginning but then it changes. And please show me the link to the example of any of your game played by you after your have presented some very promising chess opening. In your older videos I could find them but recently I have not. And one more thing - you have rating about 2100 from what I have seen and you title yourself as ucGM so some sort of gm. Isn't this rating a little bit too low so you can call yourself a grandmaster? Cheers.

@@DonDef88PL No hard feelings, but kindly check the peak rating of that demo account. Not to mention that I only use it for coaching purposes, making tutorials, discovering of new opening tricks and traps; and also, for testing out some dubious lines. If you watch my other live streaming videos, you will notice that I also use another account where my online rating is somewhere around 2460, currently. "ucGM" was an honorary title given to me by my students in the year, 2016, when I was still an active chess player. For more about me, please visit: www.kaspachess.com/about I stand to reason in peace. Thank you for your concerns.

Are you talking about the order that starts off looking like the Pirc and then transitions into the philidor with whites pieces out of place? That's why I like the philidor as it has that flexible move order. It's definitely a worthy defense to play if you know what your doing. The Pirc is also fun to use as well but again, there is a lot to learn before it pays off. There is nothing wrong with passive as long as you play well and know the in's and outs of the opening.
