Nothing courageous about trumpeting the party line. Nothing he says is controversial or in any way of such a nature to provoke a backlash. He was great at chess, but maybe if he knew what life was like for the majority of humanity then his views would change. Being great at chess doesn’t mean your opinion in politics is worth anything. Magnus and Hikaru have both spoken about this and even subtly hinted at Kasparov’s folly.

Gary is very well versed and involved in the politics surrounding the conflict, so to him these are things that he is actively thinking and engaging with. I would imagine the shift for him was quite normal, but for the average person, and you can even see on Yasser's face, bringing up the conflict like that can be uncomfortable or strange for sure.

The idea that there are rules to the World Championship process is alien to Kasparov: 1. Organized a candidates cycle and didnt play the winner; 2. Separeted from fide but after losing control of the classical title tryed to get a match with two FIDE Champions (No qualification process, wanted to get the match strait away) 3. Reconized Topalov as the true World Champion after he won a round robin that did not include the reigning world champion. 4. Claimed no one took the Kramnik - Leko match seriously (even though it follow the rules Kaspa agreed to in the Prague Agreement organized by Yasser Seirawan) I respect Kasparov greatly, think he is the chess GOAT and applaud his fight for democracy... But here he got it upside down: It wont be as good of a show, as Carlsen isn't in it, but it will be a Worl Championship. Why is it a World Championship? Because it followed agreed upon rules and is recognised as such by the 16th World Champion Magnus Carlsen.
@panda4247
@panda4247 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it will be a World Championship and the winner will be a World Champion. The point is that the value of these names is diminished when it does not include Magnus. And Magnus isn't playing not because he would fear Nepo, but because he did not want to get bored by an almost-year-long preparation. If the WCC match was a month after the candidates, I believe we would see Magnus there and it would have been a better climax to the cycle

Why does Kasparov always have to do Nepo the dirty? First he ignored Nepo's handshake and now he's just dropping put downs on Nepo's 2nd world championship match. As someone who quit chess in his prime, Kasparov should be a bit more understanding about acknowledging the legitimacy of a world championship where the "Strongest player" voluntarily decides not to participate.

@JoshWiniberg
@JoshWiniberg Жыл бұрын
Except when Fischer played Spassky in their rematch in the 90s, Kasparov was world champion and a much better player. He would have annihilated Fischer at that time. It's just a different situation since Fischer actually retired. If he was beating up Karpov in tournaments while Karpov was WC the comparison would work, but that didn't happen. Also, this is pure speculation, but I suspect Karpov would have beaten Fischer had they actually played a match. At the very least, the outcome isn't a given, while Magnus is a clear favourite against anyone.

I disagree Garry - you are BLAMING Ian and Ding for a choice made by MAGNUS - it is NOT their fault Magnus chose to exit and they should NOT be penalised or their victory lowered because of that action - one of them WILL be World Championship and Magnus will NOT - BY CHOICE - and if and until Magnus wins BACK that title he is RANK 2 in the world of chess as it should be and MUST be - forfeiting a game is still DEFEAT - the REASON he chose to forfeit is part of the DEMANDS of being World Champion - when you FAIL to meet those demands you can no longer be considered World Champion - Ian and Ding accepted those demands - that is NOT inconsequential - the issue I have here is that Magnus was on record to beat Kasparov's longevity and has FAILED - the torch has not passed to the GOAT - even though many consider Magnus to be GOAT he has NOT proven it by failing to hold the Championship for as long as Kasparov did - that MEANS something - it takes a LOT to be GOAT and yes longevity - motivation - pressure - will to win Championship after Championship is the TEST that Magnus FAILED which puts him firmly as Tier II BEHIND Kasparov for GOAT - a wasted moment by MAGNUS that he WILL regret one day as his legacy will forever be tainted just like Bobby Fisher's was - being World Champion comes with a LOT of obligations and pressures and some cannot handle that long term - Magnus showed he CANNOT handle that long-term - period - am I disappointed in his choice - yes and no - yes because he disrespected the Chess community to walk off the field rather than face defeat - and no because he can do whatever he likes - but please do NOT claim him as GOAT no longer - he is NOT nor can never again be considered as such - he LOST that title when he QUIT - odd that Kasparov is arguing FOR Magnus but I think it just shows how disappointed he is that Magnus threw away his opportunity - what Kasparov achieved over the board AND his longevity in doing so - is BEYOND Magnus' capability - even as great a chess player as he is - he is NOT GOAT

I think there was a chance missed by FIDE here- they should have allowed Carlsen to hand-pick his opponent, be it Anish, or some random young guy (of which there are plenty). He clearly believes there are guys worth defending the title against (like Fabiano few years ago) and the guys he is stressed to fight (like Nepo last time around- I do like the guy, but I do see Magnus' point), just because he believes he shouldn't lose to them. it´s good to see him smiling. many years not happening. Not always the strongest player is the champion. He must face the rules and the rules are not so important to kasparov. Fischer was the strongest player between 1962 and 1972 winning all his tournaments but two. But he refused to play the candidates cycles.. And I assume (following the argument) the non official kasparov vs kramink match in 2000 was not a real wrold match because the real challenger, Shirov who won the right to be play kasparov was banned by the champion who was ruler and champion. I haven't checked with an engine, but it looks like black runs out of useful moves after Rb7. If the rook moves from the third rank, the king can run up the board. If the rook moves from the a file, then the pawn promotes. If the king moves to the eighth rank, Rb8+ ensures promotion. If the king moves away from the pawn, then it falls to the rook. I don’t get the backlash for Alireza’s fashion interest. Kid is curious about other things and wants to have a life outside of chess. Obviously it will take away from his time OTB to some extent but he’s pursuing a dream
@vibovitold
@vibovitold Жыл бұрын
i think some people feel - they could be wrong - that it's an escapist activity for him; sort of a coping strategy. the kid doubts himself and seems to go into self-handicapping mode often. like in the last Candidates tournament, when he did poorly, and yet he spent all night playing bullet (and this wasn't before a rest day). if he simply said "ok i'm not playing Candidates, i may be one of the best in the world, but i care about fun more than results", the situation would be clear. but it's not the case, he kind of tries having it both ways at the same time. it's like he has a problem with focus. and this is arguably a waste of his enormous potential. of course there'd be nothing wrong if young Mozart took fashion classes. with all due respect to his possible achievements in this field, this wasn't where his potential laid. is Firouzja within his rights to do as he pleases? yes. of course. but are people within their rights to be critical about it, as it's all happening publicly? yes, it's their right too. personally i think it's really a pity, because FIrouzja, for now, is the only player younger than Magnus who could conceivably become a WC, maybe even enter the pantheon of GOAT chess players.

For a long time I used to get the impression that Kasparov would never get over the painful loss to Kramnik, After watching this interview, I am a feeling that the great man has now accepted that Big Vlad simply outfoxed him.
@vibovitold

i don't think he's questioning the outcome of that match as much as he's disappointed that he never got a rematch. if i remember, they negotiated a rematch, but the process so long that Kasparov, not getting any younger, had to give up. it certainly left a bitter taste.

he praised Magnus on multiple occasions. as for "just lucky" - are you for real? some of his matches with Karpov were longer than two of Carlsen's WC matches put together. and Karpov was a player of a greater caliber than - with all due respect -to those players - Karjakin or even Caruana, or Anand (whom Kasparov dominated convincingly throughout his career, even when Anand was in his prime).
