Andrea Klementisová is a multi-time karate World Champion from Bratislava, Slovakia who trained under Sakumoto Sensei alongside gold medal Olympian Ryo Kiyuna.
Her passion for karate and Okinawa lead to her studying Japanese, and once fluent she moved to Okinawa. She now works in Okinawa for the local government helping promote karate and kobudo. She studies traditional Goju Ryu karate at the dojo of Gibo Sensei. In this video you see her testing for 5-dan.
This is the final interview in Series Two. Hopefully I'll start filming Series Three in October 2024.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via KZfaq, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community, and to archive aspects of Okinawan culture before they disappear.

Gratulujem Andrea k Tvojim úspechom, výnimočným zážitkam a ceste s karatedo! Veľmi krásne pohyby! (=congrats A. for your successes, exceptional experiences and path with karatedo!) I do aikido and iaido in Japan (and kickboxing in the past), it is good to look at other arts, get inspiration from people like you and see the same spirit at the heart of various budo styles.

Hi there Okinawan Spirit team. My name is Don and I'm studying under Hanchi Nellie Kleidsmitdt Rouw and Kayshou Johann Rouw founders of Karate-Zen in CapeTown South Africa. I would be really honoured if you could come and interview them and hear their story of how they impacted Goju Ryu Karate here in the Western cape. Kayshou Johann also had the honour of learning from Sensei Morio Higuana aswell. I would be deeply honoured for you to share their story with the rest of the Karate world.

That sounds fantastic, but unfortunately I only have the budget to conduct interviews in Okinawa. If things change in the future I'd love to come out to South Africa. Before then try and document the stories of your sensei as much as possible to create a cultural record.

Hi Sensei Andrea, absolutely love your first kata demonstration on the beach especially your powerful Empi chudan with a loud KIAI, enjoyed listening to and watching your interview, I believe and so do my female black belt karateka that us women can demonstrate and teach a kata with a deeper understanding of the self defence aspects associated, my male karateka are atone to trying to be more assertive, us girls are more technical whilst focusing on delivering maximum power with lightning speed targeting a mans vulnerable areas from different angles using and employing our stronger hips (proven medical biological fact) for self defence purposes coupled with the element of surprise, take a closer look at Sensei Andrea, if not in her white karate gi and black belt, say wearing a dress and stilettos would you imagine she has the ability to subdue a male foolish enough to dare attack her ? We have more women at my dojo then men, including 8 Dan grades ! Sensei Andrea is / has been an incredible inspiration to us female karateka, all women should take up karate ! Don’t you agree ? ❤️ 🥋 OSS...
