This video is related to some simple repairs that are generally OK. The clear message here is that a professional would do a better job but for those swords or situations that do not warrant investment, then some of these might help..
The sword used in this video was featured in this video - • Dynasty Forge Musha Sh...
Also worth pointing out this Dynasty Forge blade is a second hand piece and my not represent all of their products.
Kashira - Glued back on.
Ito - Knot tied (poorly) and lacquered (partially off camera)
Fuchi - Spacer (tape) put on the under side
Tsuba: Tightened
Koiguchi: Shimmed
Kurikata: Glued (along with washers)
Saya: Scratches hidden with Sharpie

Bamboo knitting needles come in many dimensions, and make great mekugi. Love the pragmatic irreverence and sheer practicality.

Another great video! One thing that I have found to be helpful when trying to remove a mekugi without severely damaging it, as the the brass pin in the video did, is to use another mekugi pin of slightly smaller diameter or a piece of a cheap bamboo chopstick that is of smaller diameter. Using that softer tool to drive the pin, you can whack away on the mekugi without tearing it up.

How to fix swords after nuclear holocaust when you only have a repair skill of 15 in Fallout. Fits the November 2020 theme--3 days until the zombies horde shows up. Wouldn't want the ito to loosen up after cutting down merely a couple hundred of walkers. Good job and good luck =)

I have seen another Gentleman separate handle from the blade by taking ahold of the handle with both hands all the way up to the tsuba, then squeezing tight. Having both hands tight against the tsuba then squeezing pops it up with squeezing force. I have tried it. Works great.

Very practical for those of us who are interested in keeping our swords functional after a lot of use and practice. You should show how you sharpen them as it is very difficult to do without scratching the blade. Cheers!

I use a hardwood dowel to remove the pins, wood glue on the Ito works a treat and after drying and multiple use it's difficult to tell it's been done, silk and cotton only though. I use welding glove to hold the blade and a rubber mallet on the tsuba gets the handle off. On a tsuka with black samegawa that you can start to see the timber of the tsuke I hide them using a black dye you use to reguvinate plastic with, works good. Great vid.

I personally love this crafty stuff. I"ve made 2 handles for my one katana so far. I did a burl wood tsuka in place of same with epoxy as a sealer and tiny black glass beads as traction with sand on the edges. Got some antique fittings for one handle and just some modern day japanese made fittings....To be honest, compared to dealing with the rest of the world, playing with wood, fittings, carving, and making/fixing things puts my mind at ease.

For old gorilla glue which i use regularly to make it usable again you uncap it stick it in the microwave and heat it for 15 seconds rendering it usable. Getting the piece in which you want to glue wet with little water helps it to harden faster.

Wood glue might be easier to use less foam to ooze out. Plus it is water based so can wet a cloth and wipe it off if excessive use happens.

I took a credit card and cut into the shape of a seppa and stuck it between the seppa and fuchi to remedy some rattle but now i know what to do with the tsuba so thanks so much for making this video. I was scared to try a few of the solutions i saw as i did think of them and i also use gorilla glue in my saya for tension. Difference is I don’t place a shim. I just kinda take a q-tip and dip it in the glue and kinda smear it all over inside of the koiguchiand let it dry. Then i just kind of sand it down or drive the blade in and out till its got a nice friction fit. But yes i loved this video and i dont feel so bad now about defacing parts of my sword for better functionality. Thank you!

6:08 true everyman observation. Let's see how long it takes for that bottle to get cut open. Edit also* 9:15 man you totally could. You might enjoy it like a woodworking project. I really think it's a matter of expectation. For a home project you don't need presentation grade. I love "battlecord", it's the tamahagane of the paracord world. 19:20 that is a seriously good product! You don't even have to oil swords polished with it. I put some on a drill and did my truck wheels.. now they look wet they're so clean. Lastly, 23:40 that's cool. I've seen similar marks and had no idea what for. Learned something.

When I find the tsuba to be too loose I just put some duct tape on one or both seppa. Usually one seppa is enough, and even if I do both, it's completely invisible and is enough to make it really tight. Never needed anything more than that to tighten the tsuba.

Kinda new into this stuff, i ve seen pre made tsukas, mainly from ronin. one of the things they say is that you have to drill the holes yourself. i was wondering if there are specific sizes for the drill heads, that you have to work with or just a proximation and then you sand it or use a file to fix the size of the mekugi holes?
@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 3 жыл бұрын
I suppose you would want it to be a little bigger than the nakago on one side and a bit smaller on the other.. Not sure on that one though.
@ambulocetusnatans
@ambulocetusnatans 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, what Matt said. Also the hole should be at an angle so that neither end is hidden by the Ito. The smaller end towards the fuchi so the force of the swing pulls it tighter. If the angle is the wrong way it will tend to loosen the mekugi.

Hey Matthew, is feeling the tang move and hit the inside of the tsuka normal? When I move my katana I feel the tang tap the tsuka gently. The tsuka is 13", not sure if the length plays into that.
@Matthew_Jensen

Normal kind of issue to happen after some years of usage. You can wrap the tang with a sheet of paper and put it back in the tsuka core. Sometimes that helps. Be sure the paper is really tightly wrapped around the nakago.

From the beggining to the end I was wondering are you joking, man ?? However, after I have seen your "martial art skills", that explaned everything. Man, whay you don't just see on internet useful basic things how to handle the sword, how to take it outside the saya, how to take the tsuka out. At the end of the day, you do not have to damage the stuba to make it stable. Just put one extra sepa, man. Same with the spraimg the tuska and your desable martial art techniques, just out of any comment, sorry.

@Matthew_Jensen
@Matthew_Jensen 3 жыл бұрын
That is a question that often comes up. The short answer is I like variety. The longer bit is that both modern production pieces from china and antiques feed a different side of the hobby. Antiques are not something I look for to use and it is a lot easier to get ripped off. I tend to get less of them because I have more to learn before forking out money. More goes into it I on that side I suppose.
