Katatonia's new album 'City Burials' is OUT NOW.
Pre-order/ pre-save now katatoniaband....
City Burials is available on CD, deluxe mediabook CD with bonus tracks, black and coloured vinyl LPs with bonus track, and digitally
City Burials stands as Katatonia’s new triumph of deep & enigmatic progressive rock - the fruits of a rejuvenating and profound chapter in the band’s legacy; a catalyst for its creators, with a collection of moments constructed out of the fragments of an ever-evolving life. Compiled into one of their most important modern works and statements to date, the finely-honed instrumentation provides a multi-textured backdrop with the voice of Jonas Renkse guiding us through these latest trials of loss and ruin.
City Burials is an album that sees the band reclaim part of their heavy metal roots, via several moments of exuberant, old school classicism, deftly woven into these new songs’ kaleidoscopic fabric.

Another lyric from a Katatonia song had stuck with me after many familial deaths: “Sing a song for the ones who never made it.” The lyric here in Lacquer reminded me so much of that, “I’m just staying around to sing your song.” I feel as though everything I do is for them-for the ones who never made it. As a person who gets happier as Katatonia goes slower with less distortion guitars and drums etc, I'm having an eargasm right now. I've been checking KZfaq and their website regularly in the last year to see if they finally dropped a new song. Finally it's here and it's fuckin brilliant. FUCKIN BRILLIANT.

I only discovered this band a few weeks ago as a result of their record label , via Draconian about a year ago. The promo release single Atrium ' from their upcoming Jan release was immediately engaging - and unlike some of the other Napalm artists I gave a listen to, had no need of lozenges in terms of the vocal lines. City Burials was my first 'go to' beyond the pre-release I was engaged by. i've been playing this record more than i actually expected and am somewhat smitten.. I shared with an old fried and fellow musician in the following way :' loving the textural laments of what seems like the etherial six horse that neither won, showed or placed' There is a spirited continuity in this record that is either so well conceived or there is a spirit running the board and working the mix.. Earlier today I was reviewing some security camera footage from last night and one camera kept picking human triggers but there was no sign of any motion whatsoever.. numerous episodes over a period of a few hours. Oh great.. my cameras see dead people .. i laughed.. The road to the grave is straight as an arrow.. However long however short.

To KATATONIA: I'm sure you realize this but truly, pay no mind to the negative comments. They don't know any better (cannot appreciate both black metal and subtle beauty....why does it always have to be one or the other?) Plus, they are a VAST minority. What you guys created here is pure art. Hauntingly dark, poetic soundscape. You guys are perfecting the genre you have created. Please continue down this path and you will always have those who follow. This is reflective and contemplative music at its finest! Cheers from CANADA!

Wow, this level of boot-licking and hypocrisy... I mean, I love Katatonia and have even appreciated their last album despite having certain concerns about the musical direction, but you're just straight up disregarding the opinion and critique of an entire community of people who love a heavier, metal sound of Katatonia (which spans through the entire discography up to their Dead End Kings LP). This isn't the same Katatonia, if the rest of the album is going to be like this. Of course, no one has the right to command or force them to stop making music the way they like, but no one has to agree with and like every choice they make. People are free to criticise things, so stop being a hypocrite by calling out those who don't share the same blind obsession over Katatonia with you.

@@Mike_Whickdale How can you honestly even go there? Have you not listened to Unfurl before? This new approach hasn't exactly come out of thin air. They were already sharing their experimentations with us. Honestly, this isn't far off from what they have always been doing - "Day", Gone" - music and production just takes it in slightly another direction. But, you have more songs like "Unfurl", "Vakaren", "Sold Heart", "Inheritance" which thistrack feels more at home with. Heck, even "The Longest Year" had elements of this production already present. This album is already sounding like it'll be even darker than NITND. So no, I don't agree with you....this is still Katatonia. They're just - hopefully - embracing this atmospheric side to them more than ever before. We have a lot of albums with their guitar work, let them do other stuff....for me, as long as the music is actually GOOD I can listen to whatever. Guitars or no guitars. Opeth has guitars and they suck now. I think your problem is that it just isn't heavy enough for you...Katatonia hasn't always been about the heavy.

@@CJTranceAddiction it's not about heaviness. It's about the content. I've already mentioned that I like those loungy trip-hop-ish songs, but this new one doesn't sound anything like the old ones. It feels mediocre, effortless, it has no interesting features other than monotonous and vacuous synth sounds in the background. It's an "ok" intro for an album, but as a standalone track it doesn't work for me, it's not like Unfurl or Day, it's only somewhat similar to Vakaren, but even Vakaren is considered by me inferior to those other songs, so this new song is even worse. Maybe they're trying to appeal to a newer generation of music with this ambient-like dream-pop song, but it's definitely not on the level with their earlier works. It's not just different, it's lackluster, and I'm telling you that this is coming from a guy who listens to this sort of stuff.
@CJTranceAddiction
@CJTranceAddiction 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mike_Whickdale Ok, so in YOUR opinion this is inferior to those songs. Well, in MY opinion the music is more simplistic, sure, but there is always a purpose when they choose to do less than more. It ALWAYS serves a purpose. The thing is, the chorus man...the vocal melodies are some of the best Jonas has ever sung. To me, it's on par with Unfurl and better than Day, for sure. But to be honest, it's going to be very hard for me to completely dislike a katatonia song. It has to be doing something completely out of the ordinary and for me as a long time music listener and I'm by no means a "metal head" this totally hits all the right spots. If I get the "chills" from music, it is an instant win for me. It's something I cannot control, the music itself has already made me decide.

Long-time Katatonia fan, and recently got heavily into Sleep Token. I'm digging this for sure. It's different, sure, but Jonas is there and that's almost certainly enough for me. I'll reserve full judgment for when the album drops. But this one's going on a playlist once it's on Spotify in the meantime. Moody and atmospheric. I'm in.
